House Democrats Propose Mandatory Liability Insurance For Gun Ownership

April 2, 2013 by

A group of Congressional Democrats has come up with yet another outlandish gun control proposal: requiring all gun owners to carry mandatory liability insurance.

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) presented the “Firearm Risk Protection Act” last month with the support of eight Democratic cohorts; she lauded the legislation as “the first bill to require liability insurance of gun buyers nationwide.”

If the bill were passed, potential gun owners would be required to obtain “a qualified liability insurance policy” before purchasing a firearm.

“For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence,” Maloney said as she introduced the legislation. “My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons.”

Under the law, firearm owners without liability insurance would be subject to fines up to $10,000.

NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action director Chris Cox told The Daily Caller that the proposed legislation is “ridiculous on its face, as it presumes law-abiding gun owners are guilty for merely exercising a fundamental, constitutional right.”

The bill is not expected to get much traction.

It is absolutely ridiculous to have to buy ins. As a gun owner. When at an amusement park with roller coasters and rides people have died on do we have to but insurance. Any sport can be thwarted with some danger like skiing, football, boxing. NASCAR etc. when a NASCAR car runs into a crowd accidentally should we buy insurance for attending events which can injure or kill a spectator as an unintentional race car runs into a crowd and kill them. Check any deaths occurring from gun ownership for hunters or people who shoot at ranges. You will see it is 1 of the safest sports on earth.if you want to make it difficult for me to go to a range and shoot at paper targets or at cpetitions like TopShot or OLYMPIC SHOOTING. Would you denigrate the women in the last Olympics shooting event who brought back US GOLD MEDAL. She devoted her life to becoming an Olympian Gold US winner. Go after illegal guns that Chicago gangs buy on the street because no store is allowed to sell a felon or to sell anyone a fully automatic machine gun which only LE or military is allowed to have doing their duty. It is illegal for a citizen to possess one and no story carries them for sake. So how do gangs get these weapons. Legal Permitted trained in safety gun owners are pursuing their right of the constitution and besides the second amendment, the constitution bill of rights guarantees the right to life, liberty and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Many legal gun owners have a passion to hit bullseye paper targets on ranges that are all safe. Why deny a persons passion and love for the shootings sports who hurts no one? It is not an American value to deny decent legal folk from doing what they enjoy without any danger to any one.
