House Committee holds ‘kangaroo court’ hearing

April 9, 2009 by

House Committee holds 'kangaroo court' hearingThe National Center for Public Policy Research has accused U.S. lawmakers of holding one-sided hearings on the consequences of the California drought.

The hearing was held on March 31 by the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources and focused on climate change as the main culprit of the critical water shortage while glossing over the role of activist-inspired environmental policies.

In addition to that, only representatives of government agencies were permitted to testify.

"At the height of a California drought and during a serious recession with massive unemployment in California’s Central Valley, one would hope that the committee cared enough about agricultural workers and minorities to invite as witnesses actual unemployed farm workers," said R.J. Smith, a senior fellow at The National Center.

"Let’s have an open committee hearing and hear real people discussing the impacts on their lives from government regulations and massive job losses – instead of more government bureaucrats who are only causing the problem," he added.

According to University of California at Davis, 80,000 jobs could be lost in the Central Valley. The state risks agricultural losses of over $2 billion for the upcoming season and $3 billion in total economic losses in 2009 as a result of the drought.

Kaaleeeephornyaaa and it’s legislative leadership is becoming legendary for it’s stupidity and greed, I cannot understand why anyone would look to this state for leadership in any field. If you do not understand bureaucarcy then look under the picture of Ca. in the dictionary, that same description applies to words like bonehead, nitwit, doofus and screwball. Yep, these clowns have made the golden state into a lead ball.

O.K. bonehead. California legislature is miserably inept, but it is the U.S. Congress that propogates the myth of Global Warming and give the EPA much too much power over the use of our natural resources. The Endangered Species Act is the primary reason we are suffering from a man made drought in California. The legislature is driving manufacturing out of this country and they are now trying to wipe farming out as well. This is a National Security issue that is of immediate consequence, but no one knows about it because people like you just right off California as the land of fruits and nuts.

FINALLY one tiny bit of common sense legislation to come out of Washington since the currrent administration took office. Stem cell research is one of the most promising areas of medical research in years and too much time has been wasted by idiotic restrictions on that sort of research.

    • Teresa

Well, you are almost correct. It is ADULT stem cell research that is making great strides. There has not been any progress with fetal stem cell research.

    • Dean2009

Weinhardt, are you not concerned about the fatal tumors which always occur in EMBRYONIC stem cell research. It has been so ever since some boneheads started trying it. ADULT stem cell research, on the other hand has had remarkable results; and indeed is the only stem cell research which has produced any useful results. You say this will bring about promising results. Where is the promise?

At the last measurement of the mountain snow pack, from which California gets a large % of it’s Summer water, it was lower than in many years and did not contain the same level of water content as in past non drought years.

While no one likes bureaucracy and big Government, it is hard to see how they passed bills (or didn’t pass budgets) that
resulted in the snow pack being low. It is low because it did not snow much in the mountains. I don’t know what made the water content lower than in non drought years, but I still don’t see how the bureaucracy and the legislature, as bad as they are, could have caused it.

The central valley and the farmers are hurting from a lack of water, but in Monterey and up and down the coast, the fishing community is facing a second season where there are not enough Salmon to pay for the diesel needed to take a boat out. The boatyards are hurting as are all the stores that sell gear, equipment, motors, boots, slickers and all the things that keep a community going economically. Not to mention the Restaurants, hotels, Rental cars, City marina fees for slips.

You get the idea; it is just like the Valley. One thing leads to another and people are out of work far afield from farming and fishing. The guy selling cars can’t sell them to farmers with no crops or fishermen with no fish.

The big problem with the Salmon is they don’t have the water in the rivers where they spawn to reproduce in amounts that are sustainable to come back down to the sea.

In the last few years, the US Government, at Bush’s direction, diverted the river waters to the farmers resulting in the collapse of the fishing industry and chunks of the coastal tourist industry. So yes, big Government and it’s ignorant and arrogant actions can cause workers who depend on water in the rivers to lose their jobs, homes, families and lives.

The fishing industry is working with the farmers to come up with a way to share the water so we can grow crops and catch fish as we have in past years before Bush.

Pray for snow. Pray for rain. Pray for an intelligent solution by thinking people.
