Higher vitamin D supplementation protects seniors from fractures, article says

July 17, 2009 by

Higher vitamin D supplementation protects seniors from fractures, article says Swiss researchers believe that vitamin D supplementation of at least 400 international units per day (IUD) reduces risk of certain bone fractures in older people.

The conclusions, presented by scientists from the University of Zurich, are based on a meta-analysis of 12 previous clinical trials of oral vitamin D supplements in adults age 65 or older, and apply to non-vertebral fractures, including eight trials specifically studying hip fractures.

The overview has yielded insights which suggest that vitamin D supplements decreased the risk of non-vertebral fractures by 14 percent and of hip fractures by 9 percent. At higher doses – exceeding 400 IUD – this type of supplementation was found to reduce non-vertebral fractures by 20 percent and hip fractures by 18 percent.

The authors published their analysis in the Archives of Internal Medicine where they wrote that "[the results suggest] that higher doses of vitamin D should be explored in future research to optimize anti-fracture efficacy."

"Also, it is possible that greater benefits may be achieved with earlier initiation of vitamin D supplementation and longer duration of use," they added.

A significant decrease in fracture risk was also noted among participants whose blood serum levels of vitamin D achieved a greater increase.

Anyone who wants to know more about vitamin D or find a good supply should take a look at This site has recently made available a new micro pill formulation of vitamin D that is tiny and tasteless unlike some of the large pills that vitamin D presently comes in. They are also offering free supplies of vitamin D for the children of their customers so its a pretty good deal

Just over 400 IU:s is hardly a “high dose”. There is previous evidence showing that at least 700 IU:s is required to reduce fracture risk, and even more can be ideal.

Blood tests showed me low in D so my Dr. has me on 9,000mg/day of liquid D3. We shall see.

I just talked with a friend who is taking D3 50,000 IU a day and this is not a typo. She get’s a prescription from her Dr. for this strength. I thought I was getting enough by taking 5,000 IU but it seems more is better and can’t hurt.

ReBecc..the kidneys function is to take from the blood what the body needs. Water soluable minerals and vitamins are excreted into the toilet. Oil based like the B vitiamins in excess may damage the liver. So people who are taking large amounts of vitiamins are doing damage to their body or just flushing down the sewer. DeBra

My aunt almost died after taking 50,000 units of vitamin D. Her doctor wanted her to take that amout for seven weeks. The vitamin D was the only thing different in her daily routine. This 87 year old lady was placed in the hospital for around 5 days and all kinds of test were given. They could not find a reason for what happened. Our family thinks it may have been caused by the large amout of Vitamin D.
I take 1 tab 400 IU daily and wouldn’t consider taking a higher dosage after her experience. This amount is suppose to be 100% of daily value. SD
