Herbal supplement may lower risk of prostate cancer

March 4, 2009 by

Scientists investigate the potentially beneficial role of isoflavones in lowering the risk of prostate cancer Scientists suspect that isoflavones may be able to reverse the androgenic effects of a steroid synthesized in the human body and play a role in prostate cancer prevention.

Researchers at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health are looking into the role of isoflavones in countering the effects of DHEA, a steroid compound which stimulates the production of testosterone.

High testosterone levels are known to be adversely associated with prognosis in men with prostate cancer.

During a NCCAM laboratory study, cell cultures were subjected to DHEA and an increase in testosterone production was noted. However, when they were treated with red clover isoflavones, the androgenic effects of DHEA were reversed.

"Something is happening in the prostate tissue microenvironment that is illustrating a potential cancer prevention effect from this supplement," says Dr. Julia Arnold, a staff scientist at NCCAM.

However, she cautions that more research needs to be conducted before the effects of compounds and their interaction with DHEA are fully understood.

This Is Really An interesting Article. One Article is just recieved said meat eating raised Cancer 40%- Though i had a friend in perfect health even though he was vegatarian, and nutritionally sound met his demise from the prostrate. Most of the people who are consuming fast foods without regard to nutrition, in its More Gunuine forms, i would say they are at risk. A full circumference, in taking care of ourselves/in a prudent practical way, goes far for planned prevention.

    RE: Testosterone and cancer

High testosterone levels are known to be >>adversely associated with prognosis in men >>with prostate cancer.

This may be the exact opposite of the truth. I think there is evidence that the causative factor in prostate cancer is estrogen, not testosterone (also in breast cancer). If so, the indicated treatment is the exact opposite of what the above article suggests. Substances like DIM, which suppress estrogen activity, would be the way to go. So beware.

Incidentally, selenium and Vitamin D3 may be preventative/ curative for prostate cancer.
