DURHAM, N.C. (UPI) — Being unemployed may increase the risk of a heart attack, and the risk is highest in the first year of unemployment, U.S. researchers say.

Matthew Dupre, an assistant professor of medicine at Duke University, and Linda George, a professor of sociology at Duke, looked at the different aspects of unemployment and the risks of heart attacks among 13,451 men and women ages 51 to 75 who participated in the national Health and Retirement Study, USA Today reported.

Participants were interviewed every two years from 1992 to 2010. Using statistical models, the researchers looked at associations between multiple aspects of employment instability and heart attacks.

The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found:

  • Heart attack risks were about 35 percent higher among the unemployed than employed, and risks increased incrementally from one job loss at 22 percent higher to four or more job losses, or 63 percent higher, compared with those without a job loss in their lifetime.
  • The risk of having a heart attack was highest the first year of unemployment.
  • The harmful effects of unemployment were consistent for men and women, and major race/ethic groups.

Participants had the same risk of a heart attack from unemployment no matter what their education level or socioeconomic situation, Dupre said.

And toss in the fact that many of those who are unemployed are there through no fault of their own.

An then toss in the fact that COBRA is very expensive.

And then toos in the fact that not having insurance causes more stress as the thought of losing a house that folks worked their entire adult life for.

And then toss in the fact that those who want to help are called “socialists.”

And then toss in the fact that those who claim to be “pro-life” are simply using the word for political gain.

And then toss in the fact that Americans are being stressed to DEATH by the right wing and their not careing.

And then the right tries to blame anyone else for their loss in an election.

Booby Smith, Sounds just like a true brain dead socialist democrat. Tou can be on COBRA for till you get another job, that is if you can do something productive, besides shuffle paper and theorize BS pipe dreams? Any one who has a job always have to pay preimuims of some kind. People who have protisituted themselves by voting for more government employment, union thuggery, and beleiving the belytway smucks should be giving lazy dead azzed morons uneployment taxpayer paid checks, for being a one trick shulb. Must be a book trained cat gut degreed idoit from the damn liberial colleges, by professors, who never created a job, but pushes pencils and theorizes adnasm, and beleives in “global warming”, and windmills.

        Absolutely FALSE.

I know there are folks who have two part time minimum wage jobs who can’t afford insurance and aren’t eligible through either company because they don’t meet the minimum number of hours.

They are hard working, reliable, and enthusiastic to have any job at all, but they are pretty much cheated by the system.

America NEEDS universal health care. Without insurance the “life” portion in the United States Declaration of Independence has no meaning. People do DIE without proper preventative health care.

And we all know that anyone who denies “life” can’t call themselves “pro-life.”

Have to agree with Rob for the most part. Right wing greed (most repubs)
& incompetent leadership (George W. Bush) were major factors in starting
the current slide into the economic mess we find ourselves in. While the
slide continued under Obama, even Bill Clinton – who, by the way left “W”
with a SURPLUS to play president with – stated that even he (Bill Clinton)
couldn’t have cleaned up the mess that “W” left, in just 4 years. And this
is not just my opinion. A recent national poll indicated that almost twice as
many Americans still hold “W” to blame for the mess as they do Obama.

Concerning “brand inspecter” above, who can’t even spell his own name correctly (along with about a third of the words in his little diatribe) he is
his own worst enemy. I am resisting the temptation to stoop to the kind
of profanity, name calling & slanderous comments he foisted upon poor
Rob, although I could darn well do so, & be pretty much correct. I would
like the editors to tell me how such a raving, over the top, slanderous, &
name calling article ever made it onto this site – in violation of the very rules for comments from readers. & no offense intended, but your proof reader must have been asleep or out to lunch when that piece of doggone work slipped by. Never too late to remove it. I’d really like to know!

        Hi Bill,

        Thank you.

I rarely see anything but an occasional “bad” word deleted.

Quite frankly it shows the “intellect” of some from the extreme right wing. The more folks who see the nonsense will soon realize just who they are dealing with and how invalid the positions of the extreme right wing are.
