Healthy Diet May Lead To Improved Behavior In Children With ADHD

March 22, 2011 by

Healthy diet may lead to improved behavior in children with ADHDChildren with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who consumed diets of whole, hypoallergenic foods like rice, carrots, turkey and lettuce for four weeks experienced significantly reduced symptoms when compared to counterparts who ate what they wanted, according to research that was published in the journal The Lancet.

A team of scientists at the ADHD Research Center in the Netherlands conducted a study examining the nutrition and behavior of 100 children between the ages of 4 and 8.

The young participants were split into two groups: One was prescribed a healthy diet and another was told to eat as they usually would. After one month, the researchers interviewed the children's parents and found that 64 percent of the kids on the hypoallergenic diet experienced significantly improved symptoms of ADHD.

The results may come as good news to parents who are reluctant to put their children on prescription drugs like Ritalin or Adderall that are usually prescribed for the condition.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that an estimated 9.5 percent of children between the ages of 4 and 17 suffer from ADHD. Additionally, it says that the rate of the disorder rose by 22 percent between 2003 and 2007.

Stop adding Fluoride (Rat poison) to the drinking water and the problem will go away!

    • granny mae

      Richard,
That would be a big step in the right dirrection but would not solve the problem. Until we can get all the dyes and excito toxins out of our food supply we will continue to have this problem. These things are poison. They are rampant in fast food or convience foods. Everyone today uses convience foods.

Rice, turkey, carrots, lettuce? And are all these organic? And are these really nourishing foods? Who writes this BS for you? Shame on you!!

    • granny mae

      Polski,
I can tell you from experience with 5 children and 3 grandchildren that this is not BS. If they would only continue their experiment a little farther they would have realized and even bigger improvment by removing all dyes and excito toxins from the diet ! I know this works because I have done it. There is a noticable difference in just a week but if it is continued for months you would be astonished at the results! It doesn’t take but one little slip to see that all can be lost and you need to start over again. There are even some fruits like apples that will set off a hyper child. Most people think it is sugar but it isn’t, it is the dye that is in the sugar eaten ! Cake frosting, suckers, hard candy kool-aid, soda, store bought pudding (vanilla) Marshmallows, and marshmallow fluff all have des in them.Start reading ingred labels from the bottom up and you will find dyes in just about everything you eat, includding tooth paste, tylanol capsules, any pill or liquid medicine that has a color to it, even white will have dye in it. All the cereals that kids love have dye in them. If you have children that are hyper or have a problem with attention deficit please try this and see if it doesn’t help. I promise you, you will notice a big difference ! You will have to make everything from scratch but for your kids it is worth it. I had children with this problem and even now that they are grown they all say they still have a problem if they aren’t careful. Even with gatorade. My grand chidren suffer with it and I have a niece that has three kids that their friends had ask them not to bring their kids over any more because of their behavior and hyper activity. I told them about this and asked them to try it for one month and see if they didn’t see a change. They surely did. Now when they have a day that is a bad day they sit down and go over what they have eaten or drank. Usually it is something the kids were fed at a friends house. Read all labels especially for food dyes ! It will settle your life down to calm again, I promise. And 141, you don’t know your a-s from your elbow on this one. I have lived it and I can garentee you my kids were not shelterd or house sitting. Can’t much shelter 5 boys and these kids are too active to keep in the house. They played kick ball, foot ball, baseball and ran cross country, did pole jumping played basketball and one child use to run 2 miles home from school everyday and when he got to the house he made 3 laps around the house before he came in, and that was in grade school ! They road bikes and skateboards and were just plain active all the time ! As for sheltering 5 boys, not this momma. I wanted them and their activities outside as much as possible.

people this stuff messes with their brains. It causes a type of swelling. I suggest reading a book on excito toxins and you will see just what all is added to the food you and your children eat ! There is a group called the Feingold institute that can be contacted on the internet that deal with this problem and they can help everyone with information on how to handle this problem. Dr Feingold was the first to recgonize that these chemicals were the problem. It is not just children that suffer from this, so do adults. If you have it as a kid you will continue to have it as an adult. You don’t out grow this problem, you control it by what you put in your mouth ! Even those little transfers that the kids like to use as tatoos on their skin will do it. We have even noticed some lotions with dyes in them do the same thing. Whether it gets into your body by your mouth or by your skin it is all the same and will effect a person the same. It sometimes take the liver three or four days to detox this stuff !

Stop using illict drugs, we now have 3 generations of illegal drug use, as the level of “diagonoisted” of ADHD kids. Most kids that have been given the tag, are house sitting, moma sheltered kids. Putting kids in a stuctured enviorment from age 2 is a big cause. Are anti social, cann’t not entertain themselves, will not focus, and go bonkers if don’t get their way. Too much Dr. Spock crap and feel good bildge.
