Happy Constitutional Birthday?

June 21, 2012 by

The U.S. Constitution was ratified 224 years ago today.

The document that became the Constitution developed after three months of debate. It was signed on Sept. 17, 1787 by 38 of the 41 delegates present. But according to Article VII, it would not become binding until it was ratified by nine of the 13 States.

In December, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut ratified it. But other States held out because they felt the document gave too much power to the Federal government. The other States agreed to ratify it only if amendments were added.

In February 1787, Massachusetts delegates agreed to ratify the Constitution once they received assurances Congress would take up amendments that would reserve undelegated powers to the States and protect the basic rights of freedom of speech, religion and the press. Maryland and South Carolina soon followed.

On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth State to ratify the Constitution, making it the law of the land.

In the 224 years since, subsequent Congressional acts and judicial decisions have almost made the document meaningless, as evidenced by the passage of the liberty-stealing USA Patriot Act and, more recently, the National Defense Authorization Act and President Barack Obama’s actions in picking and choosing what laws his Administration enforces and his issuance of executive orders that bypass Congress.

What constitution ? You could not possibly be referring to the former United States constitution could you ? It has been irrelevant for the last fifty years at least .

We need to simplify life and get back to just the US Constitution which is a brillant piece of work.

    • GALT

Since it did not survive, that is was “brilliant” would seem to be false……..that you have voluntarily permitted this and continue you to do so……..and are easily distracted from understanding how this happened……is what is “brilliant”…….who would have thought
that such a obvious fraud would be so easy to accomplish and maintain for so long?

You are so right. Pity that so few of the posters to here will take the trouble to refer to your link and if they did, would they understand the implications of it.

I am amazed that such deviousness was allowed to occur on such an important issue as the Law of the Land, but it just goes to show that ignorance is bliss!

No constitution, no rule-of-law, no hope for liberty.

Ron Paul and other Constitution loving politicians are our only hope.
Disrespect the Constitution and you disrespect my free-will and you
can expect my utmost contempt and wrath.

I would point out that without the ratification by New Yotrk and Virginia–also holdouts for reserved powers and a bill of rights–the nine ratifying states would have had a hard time pulling the Compact together, Madison had to make concessions to the anti-federalist faction in Virginia and in New York, Clinton prevailed over Hamilton on the same issues.

If we would go back to the “grass roots” of what this country was founded on we might really enjoy the liberty of what our constitution stands for. One thing that would really help is if we sent real american people to represent real americans to Washington. All these career politicians that went to the finest schools, had the generational weath let them have all the privaliges that most real americans never will know. They want to keep that lifestyle and they will take sides where ever the money leads them. When are we going to stop being depenant on other countries to keep us and our economy going? We used to be the most industrial country on the planet. Now we sell our soul in the name of profit to out source everything. And most of these companys own our politicians or our politicians own these companys. I say get them out of there! Have a two term maximum! Elect real world people. Give them the same insurance benifits we get. Give them the same everything the american people get and I’ll bet they would work a lot harder.

“640 acres of your own choosing”, the incentive that Sam Houston offered Davy Crockett
to come to Texas……….not the John Wayne one, but the Billy Bob Thornton one…….

the battle began before the sun rose and ended quickly, most mexican casualties were from friendly fire…..and in the end Santa Anna lost because he sucked as a general…..

If there is a moral lesson here it is this……..” Davy Crockett stayed and died at the Alamo because he was Davy Crockett, because he has led men into a situation that he did not understand….but believed he was morally obligated to stay…….”

We no longer have leaders of “moral courage”. and in this case the “moral courage” is situational………Mexicans did not permit slavery……..and Texas became a “slave state”…..

History can be confusing……it would be unamerican not to admire the courage of those that stayed and died at the Alamo…..but what did they actually die for?

Yeah I know, another question….you don’t even want to consider……

I don’t really mind, but the next time you use the word “freedom”…………

THE PROBLEN WITH EVERY THING IN WASHINGTON, D.C. IS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE ANY REAL STATESMEN OR WOMEN. NOW DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE ALL THEY DO IS TRY TO GET ALL THAT THEY CAN FOR THEMSELVES. NOT ONE OF THEM CARES A BIT FOR THIS COUNTRY. WHEN NO ONE ELSE HAS A PAY RAISE, THEY MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET A COST IN LIVING RAISE. THEY SHOULD BE PAID LIKE MOST THE WORKING PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY DO. SO MUCH AN HOUR, PUNCH IN A PUNCH CARD THEMSELVES. NO WORK, NO PAY. MAKE THEM PAY S.S. LIKE THE REST OF US. NO BENIES. START AT MINUM WAGE. NO RETIREMENT AFTER 4 YRS. OUR SERVI8CE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE THERE 20 YRS. HAVE THE SAME MEDICAL AS UP. IF IT IS GOOD FOR US, THEN IT SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM. AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN REELECTED SEVERAL TIMES, THEY THEN FORGET WHAT STATE THEY ARE FROM, THEY BUY A HOUSE THERE AND FOR GET THE HOME AREA, ONLY TIME WE SEE THEM IS WHEN IT IS REELECTION TIME. TERM LIMITS. THEY WAY ALL THE POLITIONS TREAT THE LAWS AND RULES OF THIS COUNTRY IS A SHAME. THEY BREAK ALL THE RULES. I BET ALL THE FOUNDING FATHERES ARE CRYING IN SHAME FOR THE WAY THESE BUNCH ACT AND TREAT THE UNITED STATES NOW DAY. I THINK THEY ALL SHOULD GET A BIG PINK SLIP AND TOLD TO PACK THERE BAG, HIT THE ROAD, DO NOT CALL US, WE MAY CALL THE, MAYBE. NO WAY AT ALL. YOUR ARE FIRED FOR GOOD. LET TRUMP TELL THEM THAT, HE IS GREAT AT IT. L.F.HAYDON

For all the good intentions behind the posters who say “send good Americans to Washington and we will getback to being a great nation again” they are deluding themselves. The LAW will prevent that from happening, evidenced by our two separate nations existence.
