Gun Control In Senate Likely A Tough Sell

Gun Control In Senate Likely A Tough Sell
PHOTOS.COM

Legislators with gun grabbing ambition and with the full backing of President Barack Obama are set to push the Senate to pass draconian gun control legislation in coming weeks. But the news isn’t all bad for 2nd Amendment advocates.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called on supporters to help him fight expanded gun control laws in a frantic email sent by his campaign manager, Jesse Benton, early this week.

“You and I are literally surrounded,” said the email. “The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights. On your freedom.”

The email said the White House proposals on gun control essentially set the groundwork for an all-out gun grab that:

  • “[W]ill criminalize firearms by how they look.”
  • Includes a “thinly-veiled national gun registration scheme hidden under the guise of ‘background checks.’”
  • And will ban large ammunition magazines.

“It is almost hard to believe the sheer breadth and brazenness of this attempt to gut our Constitution,” the email goes on.

McConnell has pledged to do everything he can to oppose increased gun control throughout the Nation.

Meanwhile, Senator John Barasso (R-Wyo.) told CNN’s Candy Crowley in an interview this week that the threat to the 2nd Amendment from Democrats may not be as menacing as it appears. This, he contends, is because new gun control legislation puts Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in a tight spot in the lead up to key Senate elections.

“He has six Democrats up for election in two years in States where the President received fewer than 42 percent of the votes. And he doesn’t want his Democrats to have to choose between their own constituents and the president’s positions,” Barrasso said.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is planning to introduce a ban on so-called assault weapons on Thursday. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) said he is ready to introduce a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition and that he has 16 Senate co-sponsors.

We need to all tell our senators that we are tired of being punished for the actions of a few.

    Tell them that

~300 MILLION Americans that they are supposed to represent DID NOT SHOOT ANYONE.

Tell them to STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT.
    Tell them to STOP IT
Tell them to STOP IT NOW

If enough of us send that message we can turn a tough sell into NO SALE.

    • eddie47d

Yes it will be a tough sell for it has always been that way. The NRA will pour in piles of money in advertising and condemn every gun law on the book. They won’t tell you that they have sabotaged everyone of those laws on the book to keep them from working. They will openly threaten each and every Representative and Senator (as they have in the past) with ultimate defeat at the polls. They will lamblast the airwaves about gun rights and tyranny while turning a blind eye to the mass shootings as no more than collateral damage. They will incessantly talk about how a few gun deaths are worth the price of “freedom” even though so many have lost their freedoms to guns. Then there are those who will continue to talk up FEMA camps if gun control is enacted and that Obama’s army of children will be knocking on your doors to take your guns away. That you will never be seen again if new laws are passed. Yes fear sells and gun owners will bring up tales of terror by Stalin and Pol Pot and that America is in emanate danger of being cloned into those times. Yes those law abiding gun owners will have their arms twisted to no end and talked down to like traitors in their own ranks if they don’t go along with the NRA program. It has worked before and it just may happen again.

You really don’t know any history, do you. Quit spewing your ignorance on these sites.

      • eddie47d

What about Greg? The NRA arm twisting or the fact that they actually write US legislation that is favorable to them….or are you going to deny these things have been said by those on this site.

      • Syd Hatfield

Poor Eddie. He and biden just LOVE to look stupid. It’s SSRI drugs, video games and gangs that are the problem. Pay him no mind, folks. Maybe he’ll get bored and venture out of the trailer park more.

Sorry to hear you are anti 2nd amendment……That’s okay there are still plenty of us that live by and for our constitutional freedoms. And instead of cursing the NRA you should be happy that some actually do stand up and fight for All of our rights and that includes your right (assuming you are lawfully allowed to have those rights ) to protect yourself and family when threatened. I think that’s mighty kind of them considering the [expletive deleted] you’re talking.
I’m just saying no one realizes how precious liberty and freedom are until they’re taken. Take a look at world history and see the atrocities that have gone down in other countries after the government took the guns away.

      • http://tigrebleau.wordpress.com tigrebleau

        Thank God for the NRA.
Ed: you should be a LOT more worried that BHO is asking senior military officers if they will fire on US civilians if ordered to do so and replacing those who say “no”.

    • george gunter

thousands upon thousands of un born kids have been killed by abortion shall we ban abortion

      • Maggie Carlson

Amen, George! 55 MILLION unborn children killed since 1973 when Roe v. Wade was passed. They should have been given a chance… One would think that a mother’s womb would be the safest place on the planet. Sadly, in the U.S., it is the deadliest.

      • Larry K.

        NO! JUST OBUMMER.

    • James Andrews

Exactly Vicki! I’ve been writing my legislators almost everyday. And next month, I will renew my NRA membership, which is up in March! And if I can get through this winter, and my workload picks up enough, I’ll buy another gun as well! I want a good deer rifle anyway.

      • Larry K.

i am calling NRA right now to join.

    • Steve E

For all the momentum 2nd Amendment detractors seemed to have at their disposal with their politicization of the Sandy Hook tragedy, pro-gun Virginia legislators have proven very successful at shooting down multiple anti-gun measures already this year.
Included in the defeated bills are the following:

SB 785 – Would have made a gun owner liable if his gun was taken and misused.

SB 1281 – Would have required “universal background checks” in Virginia.

SB 1136/SB 1232 – Both would have required “universal background checks.”

SB 1012 – To prohibit guns in the General Assembly except by legislators and police.

SB 1148 – Ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Another bill (SB 1001), aimed at ending the “gun show loophole,” was defeated as well. However, supporters may try to re-introduce it to the legislature, making it a bill Virginia gun owners need to keep an eye on.

At least Virginia is on the right track.

  • Deerinwater

I don’t see what is being proposed as being punishment, but a stab at some sense of prudence.

This whole flair up has been wonderful for arms sells, ~ It’s hard to find anything to buy out there now. ~ They have all been bought up. ~

Mission accomplished! ~ the selves are empty.

But in truth, there are weapons out there by the train load to be had, if you want them bad enough, how bad do you want them? They are just not for sale.

Do you really want one or just want to go though the process of buying one?

    • Vicki

      Deerinwater writes:
“But in truth, there are weapons out there by the train load to be had, if you want them bad enough, how bad do you want them? They are just not for sale. ”

      Advocating theft? Hmmmmm……….

  • Ken

I am most concerned about the ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds. Does the proposed legislation ban the sale or the possession of these magazines? Most semi-auto pistols sold for decades have magazines holding more than 10 rounds. If legislation were to ban possession, most semi-auto pistols would be illegal until manufacturers could supply new magazines. Legislators are not thinking things through.

    • Nobody.Special

Actually, I think they have thought this through and that is their intent. It’s also why 7 is the magic number in N.Y. 90% of semi-auto pistols hold more than 7 rounds and there are no mags currently manufactured for them that hold less.
…They were waiting for this type of tragedy / “opportunity” for quite some time.

      • Wellarmed

I can think of numerous firearms manufacturers that should pack up and ship out of that communist state (NY). Staying there is almost like paying for the legal expenses for your own prosecution. There are numerous states that would be proud to have firearms manufacturers and I question why they (manufacturers) stay?

I wonder if NY seven round mag rule applies to the police? or criminals?

    • Vicki

      Ken writes:
“If legislation were to ban possession, most semi-auto pistols would be illegal until manufacturers could supply new magazines.”

That is the intent. And it clearly punishes the innocent by denying them their right to keep and bear arms (can’t keep what you can not own) even for a while.

A right delayed is a right denied – MLK

      - Ken: “Legislators are not thinking things through.”

Obviously. If they actually thought about it they would realize that criminals ignore the gun control laws and thus the law punishes ONLY the innocent. This is why some (not enough yet) of us are saying that

~300 MILLION Americans didn’t shoot anyone

STOP punishing the innocent for the acts of a few

      STOP IT
      STOP IT NOW

  • donimn

What part of the second amendment that says “shall not be infringed” don’t they understand? They won’t do anything with criminals now! What are they going to do with 0ne hundred and fifty million more gun owners, that will not give up their guns, make them criminals too? Hmm, lets see, they can’t stop crime, stole Social Security, sent jobs out of the country and put Americans out of work, put our kids and grand kids in lifetime debt, now they want to make law abiding citizens who own guns criminals!? Are they telling us that violating our rights and crime pays!? Guns kill and not people!? Is anybody really that stupid? I only have one more question? Why, do we elect people that want to take constitutional rights and our country away from us!? If you think they’re right and we’re wrong, you, better take a look at what they’ve been doing!?

They are having trouble with the meaning of “be”. It is the root of the word ‘is’ and Clinton raised the question of the meaning of ‘is’ a while ago and they are still trying to figure it out.

The NRA contributes 20 million dollars to various political campaigns, the anti-gun lobby contributes 4 thousand. I wonder who’s going to win this battle? Answer, follow the money.

Criminals will not give up their guns Please remember that

    • Deerinwater

Well, ~ I don’t believe that anyone has asked criminals to give up their arms on a National wholesale level. LOL!

The thing is, who’s the criminal? ~ Must they wear badges so we might identify them?

Will failure to comply make you a criminal?

      • Steve E

I’d rather be a criminal with a gun than a non criminal without a gun.

  • JUSTIFIED

Gun owners must be held criminally liable should they fail to meet the responsibility of maintaining securely locked access to their firearms. No one, especially any Government authority or the United Nations, should possess any type of roster that could be used for the purpose of confiscating firearms in the United States. Remember that the Second Amendment, ratified in the Bill Of Rights, amends our Constitution to re-affirm our existing right to possess, bear, and use firearms in self defense of life, property, and sovereignty,
and the necessity of publishing this right of “no infringement” was credited to the King of England having sent troops into our Forefather’s homes, businesses, and places of worship in order to confiscate their arms. Tyrants, Dictators, Despots, and Kings will both “OUTLAW” and confiscate weapons of defense from their SUBJECTS, but FREEMEN are armed for a reason, they are NOT SLAVES. Learn what the term NULLIFICATION means in reference to the 10th Amendment of our Constitution, and start working in your state for a “Castle Law” if you don’t already have one. Wake-up sheep, find some cojones, act.

    • Bill

      Justified
And you should be held criminally liable if someone steals your car, gets drunk and kills someone. That is along the same lines of your logic

      • JUSTIFIED

My concern is with those gun owners who do not act in a responsible manner, by neglecting to secure their firearms from unauthorized access, especially by minors. Of course you’re not liable if the firearm was stolen by means of forcible entry and used in the commission of a crime, because you did your part by having locked it up. For example, manufacturers now make really nice, reasonably priced, combination or finger print released, sturdy metal, locking handgun security cases, with silent, spring loaded doors/lids, used for securing loaded self defense handguns. Much better security than a loaded revolver stuck in the nightstand drawer, yet quick and easy for me or the Mrs. to access when we hear a thump in the night. Won’t use a shotgun because it’s too slow to lock onto target, not as quick to turn around the doorjamb corners in order to “sweep and clear the corners”, they max out at 10 rounds but my Glock will hold 17 rounds, and that 18 inches of 12 gauge barrel leaves too much exposed for someone else to grab hold of or deflect, and it is very difficult to secure a loaded shotgun that is readily accessible in the home. I’m an NRA certified firearms instructor and I admit to being overly cautious about gun safety, if such a thing is possible. Secure your firearms folks, be responsible.

    • Vicki

      JUSTIFIED says:
“Gun owners must be held criminally liable should they fail to meet the responsibility of maintaining securely locked access to their firearms.”

Just can’t avoid punishing the innocent can you?

How about we punish these nice folk too.
      http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2011/12/16/fbi-says-gang-infiltrators-stealing-military-weapons-for-sale-on-u-s-streets/

      OR better yet

Stop infringing on our RIGHT to keep and BEAR arms and the theft by criminals will be less of a threat to the ~300 MILLION AMERICANS who DIDN’T SHOOT ANYONE.

STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT for the acts of a few.

      STOP IT
      STOP IT NOW

(For evidence of my assertion that criminals will be less of a threat read
More Guns, Less Crime by John R. Lott Jr.)

      • JUSTIFIED

Anyone who cares to research it, will find that criminal activity is reduced in frequency and severity, where citizens are allowed to exercise their natural right to preserve and survive, by being legally armed with personal firearms. “A WELL ARMED SOCIETY, IS BY NECESSITY, A POLITE AND RESPECTFUL SOCIETY”. A “Castle Law” confirms that a citizen has a GOD given right to defend their own real and personal property from being damaged, stolen or unlawfully seized while maintaining shelter in their own place of domicile, and to defend against anyone attempting to injure or kill them, their family members, or their house guests. This Law is sorely needed in California and in other silly-ass liberal States. Your home should be your Castle, and you should have the right to defend it, and it’s occupants and contents against the unlawful actions of others. I’m all for citizens obtaining concealed carry permits, providing they can pass the necessary mental health and felony background checks, and can demonstrate their proficiency in the safe and accurate operation of the specific firearm they intend to carry, (because collateral damage is a messy business when firearms are involved). Firearms, like motor vehicles, are tools that can become deadly by intent or by accident. If you leave the keys in your vehicle and a ten year old takes the vehicle for an unauthorized joy ride, and kills both himself and others in another car, do you think you will be held responsible for your negligence? The same results should apply if you leave firearms and ammunition readily available for unauthorized use, and a criminal offense occurs as a result of said firearms negligence. Secure your firearms and ammo people, be responsible and prevent a tragedy. If you don’t secure your ammo, it might grow legs and migrate to another home, and find it’s way into a firearm belonging to someone else. The same negligent liability should apply to unsecured ammunition as it does to firearms. Lets keep our guns and ammunition out of unsupervised minor’s hands. Oh, and let’s tell Obama and most of the Politicians in office to shove it, because we WILL NOT EVER SURRENDER OUR GUNS.

They need to donate money to the campaigns of senators that disagree with the gun grabbers.

    • Vicki

Actually I prefer the GOA. The NRA keeps trying to appease the anti-gun crowd.

  • Robert

I don’t care what is going on in the Congress, if they voted to ban guns, then revolution will start.

    • Vicki

Why would it start just because they want to punish ~300 MILLION Americans by denying them their Constitutionally PROTECTED RIGHT to keep and bear scary looking firearms ( a subset of the class of object ‘arms’)?

The reason I ask is when they banned scary looking firearms in 1994 the ~ 250 MILLION Americans didn’t revolt.

    • Protecthystudents

Gun Control isn,t about Guns, its about Control. First, if history repeats itself they have to do gun restristry. Then they can do confiscation. The states will do most of this, and pass it to the feds. UN small arm treaty in march will be signed, but the senate may not pass it. Maybe the senate will pass it.

I really wish that these politicians would realize who they are working for and representing…US. The AMERICAN people, not the illegals from other countries, not the U.N.( I really don’t care what they want. We pay for this country). We will keep our guns no matter what. The constitution was written to give us the right to keep and bear arms to protect us not only from criminals but from a tyranical government like the one they fought to be free of. Come on Washington lets get back to American values. I for one am sick of this country headed toward socialism kissing everyones butt that wants to come over and change OUR country. Give me a break. Good! The tougher, the merrier. We can do well without this overt attack
on our 2nd ammendment rights. Instead, we need to do two things. First,
lets enforce those gun laws that we already have on the books. And the
other is we all need to focus less on gun control, and a whole lot more on
    criminal and maniac control.

  • charlie

Folks, it’s so easy, it has been overlooked. All the screaming and complaining, is only letting you vent; no good is coming from this.

You Constitutionally Empowered and Locally Elected Sheriff is the only one charged with the protection of the citizenry, and the enforcement of the Constitution. All other ‘law enforcement’ is only protecting the interest of the government.
You CAN be effective! Assemble, Unite, and act as a force under the Constitution.
Ignore the Feds, they have no Right to force anything on the States – your Sheriff can and will, challenge and stop the intrusion and expansion of federalism.
So instead of cursing the dark, light a candle; under your State Legislators.
Tomorrow morning is not too soon – get out and get effective.

These fools in D.C.,live in a different world than we do. For the past 70 years they have failed to realize….most “criminals” do not procure their weapons legally! That being said, the law abiding gun owner always gets the flak for some “whacko’s” misdeeds!!

What the Govt. should do is concentrate on keeping illegal weapons out of the hands of criminals. It is a little known fact , that on the east coast, one can purchase any thing from hand grenades to rocket launchers….if you have the cash. No questions asked!

The three main hubs for these transactions are PHIADELPHIA,PA., MIAMI,FLA.,AND ….GO FIGURE … WASHINGTON D.C.
