Grape Seed Extract May Combat Some Cancers

A study published last week in the journal Carcinogenesis reports findings that grape seed extract (GSE) effectively kills head and neck cancer cells while leaving other cells unharmed.

Researchers hope that the findings will help to alleviate the nearly 12,000 people who die of the cancers in the United States and the nearly half a million worldwide each year.

GSE creates conditions unfavorable to rapid cell growth like that of cancer cells. It also damages the cancer cell DNA by increasing reactive oxygen and keeps the cells from being able to repair themselves, according to the research.

“Cancer cells are fast-growing cells,” says Rajesh Agarwal, Ph.D., investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. “Not only that, but they are necessarily fast growing. When conditions exist in which they can’t grow, they die.”

The researchers used mouse models to experiment with GSE and noted that while it was destructive to the cancer cells, there was no resulting toxicity to healthy cells.

“I think the whole point is that cancer cells have a lot of defective pathways and they are very vulnerable if you target those pathways. The same is not true of healthy cells,” Agarwal says.

Agarwal says his lab hopes to move in the direction of clinical trials of GSE, potentially as an addition to second-line therapies that target head and neck squamous cell carcinoma that has failed a first treatment.

I was introduced to grapeseed oil for cooking while visiting Austria. Is this the same as extract

    • http://www.boblivingstonletter.com/ Bob Livingston

      Dear Gerald,

Grape seed oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of various varieties of grapes, an abundant by-product of winemaking.

Grape seed extracts are industrial derivatives from whole grape seeds that have a great concentration of vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid and OPCs.

Because the extract (GSE) is produced almost exclusively for use as a supplement, it is likely to have the highest concentration of healthful vitamins and acids.

      Best wishes,
      Bob

where can one purchase this extract?

  • BobC

What exactly is GSE? If you eat grapes in total do you get the GSE? Is it only red grapes or green grapes as well?
Where is more info on this?

      Dear BobC,

Please see my response to Gerald, above.

      Best wishes,
      Bob

BobC, I would say ‘No,’ seeds normally just pass through without breaking up. I have a 0.3 oz. bottle of it in my hand right now. It’s called Traveler’s Friend. I think it sells for around $7/bottle. It was first used to purify questionable water before drinking it. I think I still have a mail order surce for it, if anyone is interested.

      • James

It was cheaper than I remembered. The last I bought was 3 bottles for $12.39, in September 2009. Go to http://www.nutribiotic.com and search for item no. 9999. Or phone (800) 225-4345. Or write: NutriBiotic, P.O. Box 238, Lakeport, CA 95453.

I have been the victim of “DOCTORS” blowing off any alternative methods of curing cancer, mainly because they are not patentable or FDA approved, from which they can get kickbacks from writing prescriptions. Any alternative treatment is far better than the destructive FDA approved radiation or chemo treatments. I personally do chelation and hydrogen peroxide treatments, as well as other natural herbal remedies.

I have been using the Budwig Protocol on my husband since the day he found out he had bladder cancer (12/27/11). The doctor just did T.U.R. surgery, last Thursday on him and he said that “…surprisingly, his bladder didn’t look anywhere NEAR as inflammed as it was on 12/20/11 – (the day of biopsies)!!!” It is all “natural food” that I am giving my husband and it is helping with his cancer! PLEASE research alternative methods of cancer treatments….I am not saying don’t do what your doctor says to do, but research it thoroughly.

  • Moosedrool

Why does it have to be used as part of the protocol with “second-line therapies on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma that has failed a first treatment”? Why not first line of defense and without the toxic mainstream treatment? They set up alternative therapies for failure because they only use them with their toxic treatments AND as second or third line treatments. They really do not want them to succeed because they cannot patent them and make the mega bucks.

  • BOB RODRIGUES

I FOR ONE AM A ALTERNATIVE USER. THE SEEDS IN VARIOUS FRUITS,LIKE APRICOTS SEEDS,PEACH SEEDS AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS HAVE A VERY HIGH CONCERTRATION OF VIT.-B17 A VERY GOOD CANCER FIGHTER. THE F.D.A. AND THE DRUG COMPANIES CAN NOT MANUFACTURER THIS AND MAKE MAJOR $$$$$$,DO TO THIS BEING A NATURAL FOOD. THEY CAN NOT PATENT SAME. ANOTHER VERY GOOD SOURCE ARE VERY HIGH CONCERTRATIONS OF LIQUID VIT. C IN I.V FORM. THIS VIT.C CAN IF DONE PROPERLY ALLIVIATE MANY DISEASE’S. AGAIN THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT,F.D.A. AND DRUG COMPANIES DO NOT WANT THIS USED. NO REAL $$$$$ IN IT FOR THEM. IN SOME CAUSES VIT.C CAN WORK IN CONCERT WITH SOME MEDS (DRUGS)

    • James

I agree, doctors of medicine are basically drug dealers.

NutriBiotic first put GSE on the market as “Travelers Friend.” It was used to make questionable water, like in Mexico, safe to drink. Just put 2 or 3 drops in a glass of water and stir, it will kill the backteria therein. also Dr. David williams recommended it for teeth that are declaying under the gums (Periodontal disease) Using a special flat toothpick, wet it with GSE and slip it under the gum of the rotting tooth. I’ve done this, and it works, my dentist told me to see a Periodontist immediately or lose my teeth, but tried the GSE first and it worked. I also swish Cepachol around my teeth for five minutes, until the stinging stops, and that also works to stop the decay.

Grapeseed extract can also be used as a mild food preservative since it contains natural antibacterials and mold inhibitor. ”
