Government Announces New Transfers Of Guantanamo Detainees

December 17, 2009 by

Government announces new transfers of Guantanamo detainees As part of President Obama’s effort to close down the controversial prison at Guantanamo Bay, the government has said two more detainees were recently transferred to France and Hungary, respectively.

The interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a review of the cases and determined that Sabir Lahmar, a native of Algeria, could be transferred to the government of France, which took place on Nov. 30.

According to the Justice Department, a federal court ruled on Nov. 20, 2008, that Lahmar may no longer be detained under the Authorization for the Use of Military Force and ordered his release from detention.

The second prisoner, whose name has not been revealed and who is originally from the West Bank, was transferred to the government of Hungary on that same day.

Just days after taking office last January, Obama signed an executive order to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison within a year and to ban harsh interrogations techniques. To date, more than 550 detainees have departed for other destinations, ranging from Albania, Algeria and Afghanistan to Australia, Belgium and Maldives.

However, it is now considered unlikely that the facility will be closed by January 2010.

you are looking at this the wrong way. the jail birds from guantanamo are welcomed to illinois by the legal industry. this amounts to billions for the trial lawyers, they are probably preparing their opening statements now.

  • N J Wilson

The facility in Illinois will make big bucks as well. Make no mistake. This deal was payback. It stinks as badly as Halliburton in Iraq….

  • s c

Zowie! Who could have guessed that a town in Illinois would be picked as the new legal refuge for terrorists? Who could have guessed that trial lawyers would have free access to easy money and turn America’s courts into yet more three-ring circuses?
Now, every terrorist in the world can become an American citizen, abuse the courts, make a mockery of justice, give comrade obama more ways to harp on Bush, motivate terrorists to cause more death and destruction AND let obama’s braindead followers think they have a ‘leader.’
How much proof does it take to see obama for who and what he is? The least he could do is to resign and move to another country, where he can walk the walk, talk the talk and show his true colors by admitting that his only purpose in life is to destroy America. Then he could claim to have at least a penny’s worth of integrity.

And the funding to purchase and operate this national treasure infinitum is coming from where?

  • http://PersonLibertyDigest Dee

I don’t know what is wrong with this government except it’s full of
people who don’t care what the people want. They were elected to work for us, but they are only working for themselves.
Those people in Illinois will be sorry for taking in the terrorists.
There is a perfectly good prison at Gitmo where they can’t excape into the American populace.

  • Claire

Since I am here in Illinois, all I can say is Unbelievable. They keep screaming it will produce 3000 jobs for people here in Illinois. How do they figure that? We are supposed to get 100 detainees. Will it take 3000 people to guard them? I cannot for the life of me figure out how this mess will create 3000 jobs! None of this makes any sense at all. It just proves that the government, Republican or Democrat, will never listen to us. They ARE only working for themselves. None of them care about the American people. I harped about this all last night. I am getting weary of the whole scam.

  • Claire

Warrior: Your guess is as good as mine.

  • Claire

You can bet none of us here in southern Illinois will ever see any of it.

  • jim

Hi Claire, Greetings from 35 miles west of Chicago and 100 miles east of Gitmo North. You can’t blame Republicans for this. In this state we don’t have any. I don’t know how much fed tax dollars our state is suposed to get, but with Quinn at the helm it will be gone with nothing to show for it in no time. They talk about how over crowded our prisons are, some were released early because of it, and we have an empty facility not being used. Now we are closing a facility in Gitmo that cost !00′s of millions to have and we’ll just close it and buy another one. That isn’t good stewerdship off our money by our gov. You wouldn’t know a recession was on.

  • American Citizen

How many lawyers are included in that “3000″?

  • Claire

According to this morning’s paper, 3,500 jobs will be created. Seems like the count for “available jobs” is going up.

  • Claire

I know we can’t blame Republicans for this. Of course, the money will go to Chicago, not anywhere else in this state. Quinn is useless. Oh yeah, they’re going to release numerous prisoners because of the overcrowding. It is too bad they don’t put Ryan in with the detainees. I hate name-calling, and I for one know I should practice what I preach but so help me God, I am sick of these rodents.

  • Claire

From what I hear and is being reported, the people near this prison are looking forward to having jobs. It appears they are all for it. In a way, you can’t blame them. They need to work and put food on the table. This is what America has come to. How tragic.

  • Claire

Dee– the people of Illilnois had no say in the matter.

  • cr747

Illinois, watch out for terrorists moving next door to you. They will fill in like flies on a tu—. Obama’s home state, he knows that he won’t ever be welcome back there. He will do what Hillary did and buy a home in another state where he thinks he can win as a senator. He knows he’s done in Illinois.

  • Claire

I don’t really know, but my guess would be about half.

  • Claire

American Citizen–I truly do not know how many lawyers. I was being sarcastic about the mess. God only knows. We do not get the truth about anything here. We never have. Old Blago should be put with the detainees IF HE EVER gets prosecuted.

  • Claire

I am still harping. All we need is a bunch of sickos being turned loose to prey on the decent people. I know one thing, I will not tolerate any sicko coming around me or my family. Sorry guys, but I have no sympathy for anyone that gets put in prison. A person has choices in life, you choose to be a decent human being or a criminal. It is as simple as that.

  • Joe H.

Don’t put HIM in with the detainees!!! He’d be too easy to convert!!!!

  • jim

Illinois, where a governer serves his term and then he serves time.

  • Claire

Joe H–I never thought about that-but you are right.

  • Claire

Speaking of prisons and converting–I have edited enough manuscripts on terrorism and almost all of them have said that prisoners in U.S. prisons are converting to the Islam/Muslim belief. This is all we need.

  • Claire

jim says–Truer words were never spoken.

  • Claire

You can bet I will be on the lookout. Yes, we will no doubt have terrorists moving in plus the released convicts. There are plenty of home robberies now, and getting mugged on the street. Illinois sure has a lot to look forward to, but why should it be any different? It is more of the same corruption.

  • wayne

Did you ever wonder about these people qualifications to guard and maintain this kind of prison, is this the best way to find work? Hoow safe do the locals feel? It’s an asinine idea and yes another pandering to attorneys, who have ruined the country, it’s time to end them. Congress does nothing but rob the treasury in every way possible.

  • J C

    True. Lock n Load.

  • Markus

Obama cares more about his image with the world than the safety of the U.S…Liberalism surely is a mental disorder and most definitely going to get us killed. We can relate to what is happening now to a verse in the Bible, “In the end there will be a Great Apostosy, or falling away, where right is wrong and wrong is right.” Sort of poinant really.
