GOP Senator Stalls Healthcare Debate With Parliamentary Tactic

December 18, 2009 by

GOP Senator stalls healthcare debate with parliamentary tacticOn Wednesday, as Democrats pushed forward to meet self-imposed deadlines, Senate Republicans tried to halt the healthcare debate by insisting that a 767-page amendment be read out loud in its entirety.

The amendment, introduced by Independent Senator Bernard Sanders from Vermont, would call for a single-payer, government-run public health system.

As the bill was being introduced, Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma objected to a request to bypass the reading of the amendment, a courtesy that is nearly always granted in Congress, reports. Sanders was soon forced to withdrawal the bill, which would have taken up to 10 hours to read aloud.

A Republican aide confirmed to CNN that GOP members had discussed the parliamentary tactic at their caucus meeting and had expected the move.

Coburn immediately defended the decision, blaming Democrats for trying to hurry a much needed debate. "It’s unfortunate that (Majority Leader Harry) Reid waited until the last minute to introduce his bill and now wants to rush it through the Senate," he said.

Reid quickly responded, stating that the tactic only pushed back other time-sensitive pieces of legislation.

"The only thing that Sen. Coburn’s stunt achieves is to stop us from moving to the [defense] appropriations bill that funds our troops," he told CNN.

I Would Like To Know Who Is Responsible For Putting A Dollar Value On Every Thing That Has To Do With Health Care Being Presciption Drugs On Up.??? If Things Was 50% Less To Purchase Every One Could Afford To Pay And There Would Me Nothing To Fight Over Insted There Cost For Every Thing Is So Over Priced That No One Can Afford To Participate especially The People Living With A Pay Check Like Myself @ $522.00 A Month Im unable To Pay Rent Becouse The The Rent Is supposed To Be One Third Of Your Income Not Higher Or Lower Plus Utillities.Ect Ect Ect.I See The People Involved are Only Looking At Lining There Own Pockets Off The Backs Of The Poor And I Think That Is Very wrong In Many Ways.Give The breaks Were There Needed And Make Up The Rest With People Who Can actually Afford The Price Thats requested For All services No Matter What services Are available. Why Pick On The Skinny Cats When There Are Plenty Of Fat Ones Out There.

The Fat Cats, Lawrence, are made fatter by Big Government. As Government Grows Corruption Flows. The only way we are ever going to get our country back to productivity (thus affordability) is to get back to the competition and efficiency that is afforded by a Free Market. Big Government is the problem, not the solution. Vote Libertarian:

You can start with Robert Creamer, Lawrence. Then, you can seek out comrade obama or any of his ‘compassionate’ czars. Actually, any schizoid, ultraliberal progressive sill do.
And, don’t forget the lamestream media. Throw in our disgusting, failed education system, and that should pretty well cover it.

  • s c

Let us address THE ISSUE that comrade obama and his ‘gifted, compassionate camp-followers’ REFUSE to discuss. WHAT is he hiding from the American people, and WHY is he deathly afraid of slowing down the process so all issues can be fully DEBATED?
His health care schemes continue to grow in size and scope, and yet he’s relies on robotic sheep in Congress to avoid reading and understanding any CONTENT. Not only is this UNETHICAL, ILLEGAL and IMMORAL, it says much about comrade obama’s lack of character and his true intentions.
WHAT ARE YOU HIDING, Mr. Prez? What is in this legislation that must be rushed past the American people? NO ONE in Washington deserves blind faith and complete trust – least of all YOU.
Act like a real president, comrade obama. You’re acting like a criminal who sits back and tells his subordinates what to do, while demanding that the American people ‘trust’ you to do the right thing.
Anyone who wields so much power, yet downplays any need for proper time to debate and sift through hundreds and hundreds of pages of mind-boggling,
economy-shattering, dictatorial legislation is NO leader.
Shame on all Democrats. Shame on Congress. And, most of all, SHAME on YOU, comrade obama. You fear transparency. Time after time after time, you have proven that we can’t afford to trust you, and WE DON’T!

      s c,
that’s simple to answer!!! He knows full and well that if he doesn’t get this passed before election time that there won’t be a dem controlled anything!!!! If the houses aren’t dem controlled then he won’t be able to pass it!!!

  • michael R.

I am astonished at these pharisees, I mean content to go to hell congressmen & senators who push health care “deform” only to exempt themselves from it.

  • Franz L.

All those right wing nuts are unbelievable..
“Comrade” Obama has only been in office for eleven months and everything is his fault. Right? Do you think somebody who cannot remember how many houses he possess can care much or even understand someby whose earning is less than $ 10,000.00 a year. Either ideology blinded you or you’ve beenn drinking too much of that Koolaid the Limbaughs, Hannity and their likes have been feeding you.

This debate is way bigger than healthcare. The repugs will do anything to block any item this administration try to pass. As a reminder, election do have consequences. When you block the president agenda, you only undermine progress in this country. You guys had your chance and as usual you blew it and left a mess for the democrats to clean up. This president had bent over backward to include the repugs in everything (I don’t know why) but it’s either your way or the highway, I guess this time “the Highway it is” because that’s what the clear majority who elected him ask for.

Maybe you’re millionaires or you’re your thoughtless, brain dead peons. Why don’t you guys watch C-Span and you probably will understand what politics is all about. The repugs don’t care much about you, they’re just using you to gain power in order to make more money. if something doesn’t happen this year, this healthcare for all U.S. citizen will never happen. The same argument that are being repeated now are the same ones heard over and over during the debate about medicaid and medicare almost fifty years ago. Now the repugs are strong proponent and defender of Medicaid, back then they called medicaid a socialist program, a government take over. You guys really needs to read more…

  • henry sohn

Frank, can I get some of what you are smoking on this planet?

    • Franz L.

Why can’t you wing nuts respond to the matter at hand rather than making silly comments. I’m sure you’re not a kid…be thoughtful, and respond like an adult..For crying out loud!!! You guys are pitiful And it’s Franz you dumb a*s!!!

What happened to all the Democratic anti-war demonstrators that
plagued the Bush administration? The media really promoted them.
    Where are they?
Mr. Obama is escalating the war, not bringing the troops home as
    promised before the election.
It is simply a mystery to me. Where are the anti-war demonstrators
hiding? Maybe the major media will go on a search for them . . . of
course, I know they will not.
I guess we are to supposed to be so dumb as not to note this, etc.

    • libertytrain

Virgil – I believe they all voted for Obama – and can’t quite figure out how to protest the war now that their change change change guy has accomplished nothing that he promised them.
