GOP Donors Practice Patience Before Committing To Candidates

May 11, 2011 by

GOP donors practice patience before committing to candidatesHigh-profile donors have stated that aligning themselves with GOP Presidential candidates is not a top priority at this stage of the game.

According to The New York Times, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is the only potential candidate who has assembled a strong lineup of top financiers. Many fundraising groups are wary of committing to a candidate in a wide-open race. Polls have revealed no consensus about who may emerge as the frontrunner in 2012.

Thus, donors have decided to sit back and let the political process unfold before they back a candidate.

Endorsing a GOP contender is “not at the top of the agenda for most folks right now,” said Brian Ballard, the Florida finance chairman for Senator John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) 2008 presidential bid, quoted by the news provider.

Although most of the rumored GOP Presidential candidates are soliciting help from prospective donors, some campaign contributors are doing some recruiting of their own. According to The Associated Press, top donors in Iowa have scheduled a meeting with first-term New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to discuss a possible Presidential bid.

Although Christie has stated that he has no interest in running for the nation’s highest office, some pundits have speculated that his status as a non-candidate has actually increased his appeal among donors.
