GOP, Democrats Butt Heads Over Healthcare Reform

March 4, 2010 by

GOP, Democrats butt heads over healthcare reformOn Thursday, three dozen Republican and Democratic lawmakers met at the White House-initiated healthcare summit and agreed on one thing; the current system needs changing. Unfortunately, liberal and conservative leaders came to an accord on little else, leaving the often contentious six-and-a-half hour televised meeting with an uncertain plan on how to proceed.

President Obama soundly rejected the Republicans’ pleas to start from scratch or conduct piecemeal reform, stating that the nation cannot afford another year-long debate.

GOP and Democratic leaders butted heads on several key issues, including Obama’s proposal to establish state or national purchasing exchanges, where individuals and small businesses can pool together and compare federally regulated health plans, according to Fox News. Republicans responded that all private insurance plans should be offered without government regulation to create a competitive playing field, implying their distaste for involving the federal government outside of setting minimum standards for insurance plans.

The GOP also took issue with the Democrats’ plan to cut hundreds of millions of dollars from Medicare to help pay for the government’s reform proposal. Moreover, Republicans opposed the mandate that nearly everyone be required to carry insurance.

However, the president did seem open to a GOP request that insurers be allowed to compete across state lines.

Republican leaders left the summit unsure of how Obama and other Democratic leaders will proceed. The president left the door open to using the parliamentary tactic known as reconciliation, which would allow Democrats to push through healthcare reform with 51 votes, instead of 60.

    Obama is going to push this thing through whether or not the people want it. He is bound and determined to undermine this great country and turn us into a third world county.

    Ignorance only begets more ignorance. According to the World Health Organization the US ranks 37 out of 50 industrialized countries-the US is #37. Spain is #1. The US is #1 in cost and money spent on health care services, yet we have a health care system that ranks 37. 37!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And we don’t need reform???????? Millions of people are unable to afford health care of any kind…in a country that boasts of being the richest in the world! Rich in cooperate and political greed; rich in hospital, insurance and pharmaceutical bottom lines; rich in a health care system that is failing to provide for the very people who need it most.

    And Jana, I believe you mean to say “third world country.”

  • Doc Sarvis

    Our country needs health care reform and the Democrat’s current plan seems to be a step in the right direction.

  • JeffH

    Kirsten, you obviousley have bought into the Obama, Pelosi, Reid and Democrat scam that this Health Care Bill has to do with reform. It is anything but reform. Until you and others that think like you realize that, you will continue to follow the noisy flute of Obama.
    Obama gave up nothing yesterday that would curtail enlarging the already overspent budget, and certainly there is no way, under the Dems plan, to reform health care in America.
    Right now, JOBS should be the #1 concern for our this country, ufortunately, Obama and the Dems are more concerned about growing government and the defeciet.

  • Joe H.

    Kirsten.
    If the care is so bad here why do Leaders from all over the world end up coming here when they have a life threatening problem??? I suggest you check out the standing of the Cleveland Clinic and Rainbows Baby and childrens hospital in Cleveland Ohio. While you are at it check out the Mayo Clinic and Walter Reed hospital

  • DaveH

    Kirsten,
    They pay a big price for their rankings. Greece is failing, and Spain, Portugal, and Great Britain are not far behind. Look the countries up on this Economic Freedom ranking and see how much they pay in relation to their GDP. Socialism is not free, but it is inefficient.
    http://www.heritage.org/index/Ranking.aspx

    Also, you have no idea how the WHO (a United Nations Agency) arrived at their rankings. One of their criteria was that the citizens had “equal” access to health care. Whether it was equally poor or not didn’t matter. The WHO is that benevolent organization that was pushing forced vaccinations for the Swine Flu which turned out to be less deadly than many ordinary flus.

    If you have a craving to be a serf, why don’t you just move to one of those Mecas?

  • DaveH

    By the way, Kirsten, since you are throwing the Greed word around, what do you call it when you are lusting after somebody else’s money? In my book the forceful taking of somebody else’s money is not just Greedy, it is downright criminal.

    Kirsten,

    Guess you’re riding on that same old emotional blackmail train. While some may legitimately not be able to purchase their own health care coverage….the majority should just sell all those 32 inch (+) HD flat panel TV’s, Ipods, designer clothing, fancy new cars…and drop their cable/dish/wi-fi internet services, etc…and put that money towards their own and their family’s health care plans. I don’t have all these items I just listed, because I choose to put my budgeted money into appreciable areas of my life….so why should they be able to purchase all these things and then have others pay for their insurance? If I can do without the luxuries to cover my own basic needs, so should others instead of asking the rest to pay for it.

    Wrong, ronald McDonald house has a chapter here and they support kids from all over and fully 35% of the kids that go there are on welfare!!! It is a teaching hospital and has one of the highest standards in the US. Dr. Brian Berman was the head of pediatrics for Rainbow and was my kids pediatrician and I would trust him with my most valued possesion..My kids. He was the one that diagnosed my sons seisures when others said I was imagining it!!!

    Joe H – I’m just saying The Average Guy doesn’t always have access, or the knowledge to access,etc. Not saying it doesn’t exist – just not easily available for everyone in the USA – not just your town.

  • Joe H.

    Libertytrain,
    what about the St judes hospital? They advertise on T.V. all the time, and they advertise that no child is turned away for inability to pay!!! Mater of fact, almost all if not all states have a program for children to go to just about any hospital in their state. The care in the U.S. is not bad, it is good and I am living proof of that. I was told by a lot of med people that I should be in a wheel chair by now but due to the care of my lady Dr. I am still walking and doing things that I shouldn’t be able to do!!!

  • libertytrain

    Joe H. – you forget, I’m on your side – You are right, these places are available, if the person who needs them knows how to find them and access them.

  • Joe H.

    Obama an expert on Constitutional law should know that a usurper is ineligible for the Office of the President. One cannot faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States because;
    His every act in the usurped Office of the President is a criminal offense as an act under color of law that would subject the People to the deprivation of their constitutional rights, and entitling no obedience whatsoever from the People;
    As a usurper acting in the guise of the President you could not legally function as the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy and of the militia of the several states, as such forces would be under no legal obligation to remain obedient to you;
    No one in any civilian agency in the Executive Branch would be required to obey any of your proclamations, executive orders or directives, as such orders would be legally VOID;
    Your appointment of Ambassadors and Judges to the Supreme Court would be VOID ab initio (i.e., from the beginning), no matter what subsequent actions the Senate might take as well as rendering any such acts by such appointed officials void as well;
    Congress would not be able to pass any new laws because they would not be able to acquire the signature of a bona fide President, rendering all such legislation legally VOID;

    Nothing has changed since we don’t have a president who is constitutionally qualified. Hence no new law till we find one bona fidel.

  • http://joeaeverson@hotmail.com Joe A. Everson

    Neil Sankey, a former British policeman who’s now a licensed private investigator in Los Angeles, initiated a preliminary background investigation of Barack Obama and uncovered 49 addresses and 16 different Social Security numbers.

    Forty-nine different addresses? Sixteen different Social Security numbers? That’s beyond bizarre.

    At the Illinois addresses listed for Obama, two Social Security numbers appear with frequency. One begins with the number 042… the other begins with the number 364.

    The Social Security number beginning with 042 was issued in Connecticut… even though Obama apparently never lived or worked in Connecticut.
    Why so many, which one is real, does he file Sixteen different tax returns?

  • http://joeaeverson@hotmail.com Joe A. Everson

    Thank God we have a poser in chief who is not constitutionally qualified to sign any of this into law. Congress is not able to pass any new laws because they are not able to acquire the signature of a bona fide President, rendering all such legislation legally VOID;
    Obama cannot legally sign any law, including the present health care debacle! It takes more than the signature of an illegal alien to make a law lawful.

  • Mike Reese

    I find it amazing that Democrats don’t believe our citizens should have to carry proof of citizenship, but mandated by law, must carry proof of health coverage. Illegals are given freedoms and freedoms are taken away from Americans.
