Glasgow Cancels Plans To Raise Statue To Stop Cone Pranks

GLASGOW, Scotland (UPI) — Officials in Glasgow, Scotland, said a petition put an end to plans to raise the Duke of Wellington statue to stop a decades-old traffic cone prank.

A spokesman for Glasgow council said the leader of the body ordered city officers to withdraw their application for permission to raise the Duke of Wellington statue for $103,441 to put a stop to the practice of placing traffic cones on the statue’s head, Sky News reported Tuesday.

Officials said it cost the council about $160 each time city workers had to remove a cone from the 1844 statue.

The council leader gave the order after receiving a petition signed by 10,000 people. The document said “the cone on Wellington’s head is an iconic part of Glasgow’s heritage, and means far more to the people of Glasgow and to visitors than Wellington himself ever has.”
