Gitmo Court Closed For Year

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, (UPI) — After Hurricane Sandy prompted its temporary closure, scheduling conflicts will keep the U.S. war court at Guantanamo closed for the rest of the year.

Two court cases pending for detainees at the facility have been rescheduled for January, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday. Army Col. James Pohl set hearings for Jan. 15-17 for Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged mastermind of the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen that killed 17 U.S. sailors. Another case involving five men accused of helping facilitate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks has been scheduled to resume Jan. 28-31.

The U.S. government holds 166 prisoners at the facility, six of whom are charged with crimes that, if convicted, could bring the death penalty.

Sandy came ashore in Cuba as a Category 2 hurricane but caused only cosmetic damage to the facility, including the court structure dubbed Camp Justice by guards, the Herald said.
