Girl Suspended From School For Body Odor

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn., (UPI) — An 8-year-old girl in Tennessee has been suspended from school 24 times because of body odor, school officials say.

The second grader’s mother says she does not understand what has caused the problem, WJHL-TV, Johnson City, reported Tuesday.

“They just say it’s a foul odor,” the mother said. “She takes a bath every day, but they ask her when the last time she took a bath was and she don’t remember. She’s been to the doctor and it’s not a medical problem. They send her home at least once a month. You go to school to learn, not to be sent home.”

Ron Dykes, director of schools in Washington County, would not comment on the specifics of the case. But he said that in many instances where children smell there is a hygiene problem, sometimes because a family’s utilities have been cut off.

He said suspending a child from school is unusual.
