JERUSALEM, Aug. 28 (UPI) — Gilad Shalit’s parents led dozens of protesters outside the prime minister’s Jerusalem office to mark the soldier’s 25th birthday Sunday.
It was soldier’s sixth birthday since he was captured by Hamas near the Gaza border in June 2006 and forced to Gaza.
“Netanyahu, a birthday present for Gilad — his life back,” read a sign held by Shalit’s mother, Aviv, The Jerusalem Post reported.
“Netanyahu you don’t have a mandate to kill Gilad,” said a sign held by his father.
Shalit’s grandfather, Tzvi, told Israel Radio the situation has gotten worse since the election of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. He accused the government of not doing enough to free Gilad.
“We are working hard, but our demands are not being answered. It is not true that they (the government) is doing everything they can,” he said.
Egyptian-mediated talks in Cairo have failed to bring Shalit’s release.
