NEW YORK, Nov. 14 (UPI) — New Yorkers living near Eighth Avenue and West 42nd Street said the Port Authority building’s 6,000-square-foot, digital TV screen is keeping them up at night.
The residents said the light from the screen at night resembles lightning or emergency vehicle lights and bothers humans and pets alike, the New York Post reported Monday.
“It’s flashing, flashing, flashing all the time, like lightning or having the paparazzi chasing you in your living room,” said Wilmer Hernandez, 74, a 40-year resident of the neighborhood. “My cats don’t know what’s happening. They’re jumping around and looking all over the place trying to figure out where the light’s coming from. It’s funny, but it’s not funny.”
The screen, which was installed during the summer, displays ads for businesses including Fidelity Investments, Paramount Studios and Peter Pan Bus Lines. Port Authority officials said the screen is dimmed by 40 percent at night, but residents said they would like to see it dimmed further or even switched off completely at late hours.
