Get Married For Heart Health

Being married, it turns out, can be good for your heart health.

A new study that appears in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior this month finds that married adults who undergo heart surgery are three times as likely as single patients to survive the three months following the procedure.

“That’s a dramatic difference in survival rates for single people, during the most critical post-operative recovery period,” says Ellen Idler, a sociologist at Emory University and lead author of the study. “We found that marriage boosted survival whether the patient was a man or a woman.”

Though the most striking difference in outcomes between married and unmarried patients occurred during the first three months, the study demonstrated a strong protective effect of marriage that continues for up to five years following coronary artery bypass surgery. The chance of death is nearly twice as great for unmarried as it is for married patients about to undergo the surgery.

The study followed more than 500 patients undergoing either emergency or elective coronary bypass surgery. All subjects were interviewed prior to surgery. Data on survival status of the patients were obtained from the National Death Index.

“The married patients had a more positive outlook going into the surgery, compared with the single patients,” Idler says. “When asked whether they would be able to manage the pain and discomfort, or their worries about the surgery, those who had spouses were more likely to say, yes.”

The patients who survived more than three months were about 70 percent more likely to die during the next five years if they were single.

The researchers say that even though marriage appears to be strong medicine for healing hearts, it is in short supply. The Pew Research Center indicates only about half of adults in the United States are married, the lowest number ever.

The article makes a very strong argument for being married: better health, better survival rates, better outlooks on surgery, pain and perhaps life in general. It seems almost Unconstitutional to deprive another human being of their Right to the Pursuit of Life, Health and Happiness and Prosperity. It seems uncaring, unloving, even Unchristian to restrict or deny in any way these God-given gifts.

Remind me again why the Judeo-Christian men and women of this country and in control of our government and defenders of our Constitution would ever consider withholding this most basic level of inexpensive Healthcare from the Gay community. ???

Not only is the GOD of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob……….. HIS name is Jesus by the way; is a wonderful
GOD of love and HE’s also is a GOD of judgement.
He destroyed Sodom and Gommorrha and inside my Bible HE also explains who cannot enter in to HIS Kingdom when we leave this world. Ten out of ten will exit this life as we know it.

    Ist Corinthians 6: 9 through 10 says:

”Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, or idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abuser with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of GOD.

I used to do these things as well till the Spirit of GOD moved upon me and I received HIM into my heart.

Because HE is the Great GOD of this universe, I have been set free and will live with HIM forever when I exit this world.

Janet, I respect you, your opinion and your religion. I’m sure you know that yours is NOT the ONLY religion. God – in His infinite wisdom and loving capacity – has apparently orchestrated innumerable conditions and conflicts to challenge every last one of us. We each search our own individual soul, and listen for His voice, and hope that the decisions we make and lives we lead will be to his liking. But Janet, it is God and only God that knows my soul, knows the Grace He shares daily, and knows the “my” path that He laid out just for “me”.

I would appreciate the opportunity to explain why God’s gift of tolerance is too often overlooked. You mentioned a few things that trouble me:

“… the effeminate will not inherit the kingdom of God” ?? Wow, Janet I hope your husband is at least 6 foot tall with incredibly broad shoulders, narrow hips and bulging biceps. Those are classic ‘masculine’ traits’; the opposite of any of those would be effeminate and – according to you – guilty of some kind of sin. And let’s be fair, Janet, you better have ample breasts, supple lips, birthing hips and slender legs. Anything less would be masculine and apparently just as sinful to your version of God. Now even if you and your husband are the perfect specimens of masculinity and femininity – I’m sure you have friends or family members that are not. Are you really willing to condemn them to Hell?? Really, because if any man you know did inherit effeminate traits then you’re basically saying that God screwed up, and the miracle we call DNA has failed. You are entitled to your opinion, but MY God doesn’t screw up!!

Janet, I could take almost any one of the sins you quoted in your post and demonstrate to you how ridiculous your righteousness is. But listen, if that’s what you need to pacify your soul – you go right ahead. Because that’s between you and God ALONE.

From everything MY God has ever revealed to me – We will ALL see each other on the “Other side”. I suspect we will share a beer and laugh at all the stuff we got wrong.
