Gasoline Leak Reported In Missouri River

ONAWA, Iowa, Aug. 15 (UPI) — Water raging through the Missouri River might have unearthed part of a pipeline that leaked gasoline into the river, a spokesman for Enterprise Products said.

Enterprise Products reported a pipeline ruptured somewhere between Decatur, Neb., and Onawa, Iowa, KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, reports.

Enterprise said it wasn’t certain how much gasoline spilled into the river, suggesting most of the gasoline had evaporated.

Rick Rainey, a spokesman for the company, was quoted by KCAU-TV as saying officials weren’t certain exactly where or what caused the leak in the Missouri River floodplain.

“We don’t know if it was caused by the water that had somehow managed to essentially dig up part of the pipe or it was where the pipe came out of the ground,” he said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in July called on pipeline operators to look into the potential effects of river scouring.

State officials in North Dakota found scouring in the Yellowstone River because of flooding there. Exxon Mobil had reported a spill from its Silvertip oil pipeline in Montana, which was buried 5 feet below the riverbed.

The riverbed along some parts of the Yellowstone River is composed of gravel, making it less vulnerable to erosion. The Missouri River riverbed is mostly sand.
