Garlic: A Reliable Herb for Centuries

I can’t remember how many years I have been taking garlic, but I have long understood it has healthful qualities. Kerry Bone, a very knowledgeable researcher, wrote in the April 2010 issue of Nutrition and Healing to explain exactly how garlic works its miracles.

Just think heart when you think garlic. Bone writes that garlic may act as “an herbal polypill that can lower the risk of arterial disease by an impressive combination of different benefits.”

Until very recently, most of the attention has been focused on two particular gaseous molecules that figure prominently in cardiovascular function — nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). They’re both synthesized inside the body, and extensive research has shown that boosting their levels protects the brain and heart against cardiovascular disease.

But researchers found that garlic also helps generate a third gaseous signaling molecule that could be just as important for circulation function as NO and CO.

Garlic has major health benefits, specifically on cardiovascular disease. It relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in garlic may also help improve erectile function without risk and at a much lower cost than those blue pills.

Sulfonic acid, one of the primary phytochemicals found in garlic (allicin), is probably the most potent known biological agent for trapping free radicals.

    I love garlic! Give me a Garlic Pizza, or broccoli & cauliflower made with garlic and oil, and I’m in Heaven! Garlic also keeps me from getting sick in the winter-you know, those common colds, sinus infections, viruses, etc. I think it’s because no one will come near you after you’ve eaten it! LOL! Being of Italian decent, garlic is used to cook with in almost every dish that’s served. I know my Italian Aunts always made good use of it. It gives everything such a good taste. When given the choice of eating at my maternal grandmother’s house, or eating at my Italian Aunt’s house, I always chose the latter, because I knew there would always be tasty food served.

    My wife is part Italian and there isn’t a thing that’s cooked here that dosen’t have garlic in it.I think she even adds it to her cereal :)

    For garlic to have any worth while benefit so much has to be consumed that you would be forced to be a hermit. Alternative medicine is 99 percent snake oil. Old Chinese cures have mostly been outlawed in China. Its now mostly practiced by nit wit westerners. Try some alternative medicine for diabetes and see how that works out.

      @hicusdicus.. Which major pharmaceutical company do you work for? How much did they pay you to toss this ‘slop’ around? I take natural vitamins/minerals, I’m well over 60 years and have been in the hospital once (at birth) and expect I’ll be there one more time (when I croak).. Doctors are a rare incident in my life.. I’ve never had a serious medical problem and as long as I use these doctors in moderation and stay away from hospitals (ever wonder why the morgue is so close to these places? simple.. to save gas) I think I’ll be quite well thank you very much.. Your really full of it just like your record breaking profit monger medical profession who spews their drugs will cure (sure will, mostly they cure life).

    The key with garlic is fresh uncooked garlic. While many benefits are accrued from lower levels of garlic, it only begins to act in a similar manner to sulpha drugs at the three cloves daily or allicin equivalent thereof. For those with bacterial infections, few are able to consume 3+ cloves of raw garlic and fewer even could stand being around them. I happen to use Shaklee Corporation’s Garlic Plus formulation which provides the allicin equivalent of 1 clove of Garlic in each 2 tablets. Key with any supplement a person uses is to find out the testing methodology of the company producing the product.     I have lots of natural medicine books by some of the best natural doctors,they all say the only way to get any benefit from garlic is raw.1-3 clove a day will work.I do this and it work’s great.Don’t believe everything you hear ,research and dig to the truth.El
