Fructose Consumption May Influence Prostate Cancer Proliferation

Fructose consumption may influence prostate cancer proliferationResults of a recent University of California study suggest that prostate cancer patients may want to avoid consuming high levels of fructose, as it can play a role in the growth of invasive tumors.

For years, scientists have known that the simple sugar glucose helps drive cell division in certain cancers, and have recommended that patients avoid foods that are rich in the compound. However, very few studies have investigated the role that fructose plays in cancer proliferation.

To do so, lead researcher Anthony Heaney and his colleagues from the university’s Jonsson Cancer Center introduced either fructose or glucose to petri dishes containing the malignant cells of pancreatic cancer tumors.

Although the cancer cells metabolized the two forms of sugar in very different ways, fructose and glucose both led to rapid cancer proliferation.

"The bottom line is the modern diet contains a lot of refined sugar including fructose and it’s a hidden danger implicated in a lot of modern diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and fatty liver," said Heaney.

"In this study, we show that cancers can use fructose just as readily as glucose to fuel their growth," he added.

    High Fructose Corn Syrup was invented over 30 years ago and that is when the obesity epidemic began. HFCS is cheap to make and is used as a filler in most processed foods along with soy. Since sugars, especially fructose, contribute to aging and a host of common medical problems such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, I go out of my way to avoid it as much as possible. Fructose is the number one source of calories in this country and all the health care in the world will not help us until we greatly reduce our intake of fructose. It is less harmful in whole fruit where it is assisted in assimilation by many other nutrients but I seldom drink even fruit juices. HFCS is in almost everything! I drink an occasional coca cola but only from Mexico where they still use sugar. I don’t eat American jams, 99% of which are made with HFCS rather than cane sugar (beware that if it just says sugar it may well be genetically modified beet sugar, and although Smucker’s has recently come out with a new jam made with real sugar and not HFCS but it doesn’t say ‘cane sugar’ so it might be genetically modified beet sugar. In Europe they would have to tell you but anything is good enough for Americans as long as it’s profitable. Agave is another popular sweetener that has even more fructose in it in most cases than HFCS and is not the ‘health food’ that it is cracked up to be. Neither are soy products that are cheap to make and in most mass produced processed foods. I do all I can to avoid most products that have soy in them too. As I have often said, “YOU CANNOT EAT WHAT MOST AMERICANS EAT AND NOT GET THE DISEASES THAT MOST AMERICANS GET!” Fructose is also a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis and even liver disease. While it is virtually impossible to avoid it all I am convinced that reducing it as much as possible is a wise decision. If you want to be healthy as long as you live, avoid all chemical sugars and work at avoiding most fructose. This will mean learning to use real locally grown and not genetically processed foods, artificial bovine hormones (in 95% of milk, ice cream and cheese – but only in the USA – it’s illegal in most other countries). Cooking and health need to become almost a hobby if you want the best. My mom was 91 last year and my dad will be 97 next week and they have always used less sugar than most Americans and much less fructose. I’ve never written a book on nutrition but I mention it in all my books. Much to learn but health and longevity may be the reward if you take the time to do so.     In a recent study, high fructose intake was related to a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer . Non-fruit sources of fructose similarly predicted lower risk of advanced prostate cancer.
