WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., (UPI) — North Carolina-based chain Krispy Kreme is marking National Doughnut Day by offering free doughnuts to all customers Friday.
The company created a Facebook event page saying “participating stores” nationwide will be giving customers a free doughnut of any variety Friday with no purchase necessary, Time magazine reported Friday.
Meanwhile, competing chain Dunkin’ Donuts is offering a free doughnut with the purchase of any beverage at participating stores, and Canada-based chain Tim Horton’s is offering a coupon for a free doughnut at any U.S. location on its Facebook page.
The holiday was started by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor volunteers who handed out doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.
