Foundation says vitamin D deficiency ‘widespread’

August 7, 2009 by

Foundation says vitamin D deficiency 'widespread'Following growing evidence of health benefits associated with vitamin D, the Osteoporosis Foundation has conducted a study that found a deficiency in the vitamin is common around the world.

According to the foundation, the global population is affected by low levels of vitamin D, a situation that leads to overall health deterioration and higher rates of fractures.

In a paper published in Osteoporosis International it says risk factors include older age, being female, lower latitudes, winter season, darker skin pigmentation, limited sunlight exposure, dietary habits and the absence of vitamin D fortification in common foods.

However, it does not say what constitutes the optimal level of the vitamin, as the scientific community seems to be divided on that issue, with some health practitioners recommending supplementation of as much as 2,000 IUD.

The researchers also say modern lifestyles and urban culture are partially to blame for the situation, with more people than ever living and working indoors, and following the advice of skin care experts to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen.

In the author’s view, it is incumbent on governments to step up their efforts to encourage safe exposure to sunlight, improved dietary intake of vitamin D as well as consider appropriate fortification of foods.

Vitamin D causes kidney stones. Kidney stones are a big money-maker for the hospitals and clinics. This is why they’re pushing vitamin D.

Actually, fear of UV causes sales of sunscreen to skyrocket. If you want to follow the money, Look for the biggest pile of money. Is it urologists pushing vitamin D so they can treat the occasional kidney stone or is it Schering Plough and Johnson (that owns Coppertone) and Johnson & Johnson (that owns Neutrogena) and others that stand to make the most profit?

      • Bill

Please excuse the typo. Schering Plough owns Coppertone.

Why is it “incumbent on governments to step up their efforts to encourage safe exposure to sunlight, improved dietary intake of vitamin D as well as consider appropriate fortification of foods”?

What government touches, it messes up. Let’s leave them out of this and remain responsible for our own health.

Fear-mongering, fear-mongering, fear-mongering and fear-mongering. our whole society is based upon the scientific community’s “fear-mongering.” I remeber when the scientists came out and “warned” people of the ill effects of sunlight. What a bunch of hog-wash! I have lived my entire life outside and the “ill effects” of sunlight is poposterous! We are designed to be outside, NOT seditary all day long. Everything in the Scientific/Corporate World is based upon playing on the most primal instinct in humans – Fear. Nothing, absolutely nothing has compelled me to believe anything the “Scientific” germaphobic community has come up with. Things that concern me? CCD – Colony Collapse Disorder suffered by bees. Bees are the most important aspect of our environment, without Bees we would not have food! Turn off the TV and stop watching the Fear-mongerers and the World would be a much more peaceful place to live!
