Flight Passengers Restrain Man With Belts

September 27, 2012 by

SANTA ANA, Calif., (UPI) —  Several passengers on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to California said they were forced to restrain a man who was harassing and scaring passengers.

Arash Durrani, 26, was arrested after the plane landed at John Wayne Airport Tuesday night for the incident, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

The incident on United Flight 473 began around 9 p.m. Tuesday when Durrani allegedly began pacing around the plane and bothering other passengers.

“He was inappropriately touching women and aggressively harassing people,” said fellow passenger David Truong. “He was walking in and out of the restroom and at one point I was scared that he may have done something or gotten something in the restroom, so I asked him to sit.”

Passenger Nona Pitts said Durrani was drinking heavily during the flight.

“Everyone was getting annoyed with him,” she said. “He was completely wasted. He had three straight Jack Daniels and a beer and he was getting another drink.”

Truong said flight attendants asked Durrani to stay seated but he wouldn’t comply. He then started to scare children. That’s when Truong said he and several other male passengers decided to restrain Durrani.

“He was unbelievably strong,” Truong said. “I was on his chest and three other guys were holding his arms and legs.”

Truong said he and the other men held Durrani down nearly three hours during the rest of the flight.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said Durrani will be charged with interference with a flight crew, a federal offense, for the incident.
