Fish Oil Linked To Reduced Anxiety And Inflammation

A recent study conducted at Ohio State University suggests that if young people can benefit from fish oil, then there is a strong chance that findings will be similar for the elderly and those who are at high risk of developing certain diseases.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were found in previous studies to possibly reduce levels of cytokines in the body. Stress and anxiety have been linked to increased cytokine production, so researchers set out to determine if there could be a connection between adding more omega-3 in the diet and a decrease in stress.

Researchers tested their theory on college students. The results, though preliminary, are promising.

“We saw a 14 percent reduction in the amounts of IL-6 (a cytokine) among the students receiving the omega-3,” said researcher Ron Glaser. Since the cytokines foster inflammation, “anything we can do to reduce cytokines is a big plus in dealing with the overall health of people at risk for many diseases,” he added.

Scientists believe this research may lead to new treatments for anxiety and inflammation for people of all ages.

The health benefits of omega 3 have long been known, I just wonder how the oil pollution in the gulf waters have deteriorated the quality of the fish there or is nobody interested anymore? I for one am not convinced that that oil is gone and it sure is not omega 3 oil either.

My father was taking cod liver oil to ward off the effects of arthritis. I thought this was a good idea and have been taking various fish oils daily for many years. I am on the other side of seventy now and have no problems with arthritis (but it has turned my remaining hair gray!). Seriously, though, I have no idea of whatever other positive side effects it may bring, but I am content believing that I am the beneficiary of this lifestyle. I have recommended this to several people, however I do not know if they have gotten on board.

Always good to hear about good supplements to take for good health in various areas… now if only we can keep the FDA from regulating or revoking this one.

My whole family takes ‘Omega 3′s’ every day, even my sons.
We read and were told by several doctors and our son’s nutritionist that children with hyperactivity or ADHD need ‘Omega 3′ for good brain function…
