Financial Reform Legislation Puts Natural Supplements At Risk

Financial Reform Legislation Puts Natural Supplements At Risk

Keep your eyes focused on the rogue corporatist Congress over the next couple of weeks as the reconciliation process takes place to merge the House and Senate versions of the financial reform legislation in a conference committee.

While the provisions in the two bills which further centralize control over the financial system in the hands of power-grabbing chief executive are bad enough, a provision in the House version that has nothing at all to do with finance has really caught our attention and must be defeated.

It’s an amendment that would give the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) the authority to require supplement companies perform at least two human studies before making any claims for their products, according to the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH). Currently, supplements are regulated under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA).

The amendment to HR 4173 was introduced by Representative Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and has nothing to do with the financial services industry. But it will limit your ability to acquire and use natural health supplements.

The trials the amendment requires are time-consuming and beyond the financial means of most supplement companies, according to the ANH. And even if the companies could find the money, the FTC could require more and more costly versions of these studies, or more of those studies. At each stage, fewer supplements would be available, and those available would cost more and more, until they became as costly as drugs.

The decisions about supplements would then be placed in the hands of five unelected FTC commissioners who could issue binding regulations in a wide range of areas. And companies that didn’t comply with the new rules could be put out of business.

It’s not an unusual tactic as the FTC has done this before with other companies who didn’t toe their line.

“According to renowned constitutional attorney Jonathan Emord, ‘The provision removing the ban on FTC rulemaking without Congressional preapproval contained in H.R. 4173 invites the very same irresponsible over-regulation of the commercial marketplace that led Congress to enact the ban in the 1980s. FTC has no shortage of power to regulate deceptive advertising; this bill gives it far more discretionary power than it needs, inviting greater abuse and mischief from an agency that suffers virtually no check on its discretion.’” (

Waxman is an enemy to freedom, choice in medical decisions and to the supplement industry. On his website, Waxman writes: “I am troubled that the FDA lacks the basic information necessary to protect consumers from unsafe dietary supplements. The FDA clearly needs to have more resources to give consumers real protection. I intend to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that FDA has the tools it needs to address this and other important public health missions.”

What he means is that big pharma doesn’t profit from natural supplements so Big Brother needs to quash them. By the way, the top four industries contributing to Waxman’s campaign in the 2009-2010 cycle are: hospitals/nursing homes; health services/health maintenance organizations (HMOs); lawyers/law firms and health professionals.

While it’s bad enough that Congress’ elected elitists are more interested in protecting their sugar daddies (large financial firms that slip large amounts of cash into their pockets) than Average Joe; what’s worse is their desire to limit your freedom to make choices about which natural health supplements you can take.

We urge you to call your Senators and member of Congress this week and tell him or her to make sure no provisions restricting the use of supplements get included in the final version of the financial reform bill. You can find your member of Congress here.

And finally, I’m often struck (or saddened) by the comments from some who post on this site who fail to see how their government moves past socialism toward fascism on a daily basis. They often ask—sometimes by logging in under several different names and carrying on a conversation with themselves in an effort to disrupt a discussion—exactly what freedoms are being taken away by an overreaching corporatist government.

Well, here’s one: the ability to make your own decisions about your health and how you choose to remain healthy.

There are many others: like freedom of speech, freedom of association, gun ownership, the ability to own property (if you are required to pay a tax in order to keep it, is it truly yours?), freedom to operate a business as you see fit, freedom to pass along your earnings to your children and the freedom to decide whether your children are given potentially harmful vaccinations (enforced through rules requiring vaccinations to enroll in public schools).

If you are too blind to see that these things are happening daily, then may God help you, because you are incapable of helping yourself.

Henry Waxman looks like a cartoon character! It’s hard to take anything he says and does seriously.

I do believe this is just another attempt to take away our freedoms. Congress is rogue and needs to be stopped. We need to be patient and not get over-confident in the November elections. The revival that is happening will be even more apparent in the next election. We need to be strong and educated about the candidates. Vote for those who agree with your own agenda, and hold them accountable!

  • Marilyn

Perhaps I did not read this correctly. MY DOCTORS (MD’s) support many vitamins and minerals and they take them, as well. Right now, EVERY POLITICIAN AND ANYONE CONNECTED TO MAKING THE RULES FOR UNITED STATES CITIZENS SHOULD BE FINDING WAYS TO STOP THE OIL GUSHER PROBLEM IN THE GULF! – Not worrying about vitamins and minerals that keep many people well and happy and prevent MANY visits to the doctor!! It’s called: “PREVENTION” Which also keep insurance companies from entering the picture.

    • DesertPirate

The problem is that most people are thinking more about the gusher in the gulf so this slips silently by……

    • Mike Berman, Ph.D.

      Well said!

  • Lawrence

Impeach this Henry Waxman along with Nancy Pelosi get ride of such devils of life. The stupid voters who voted them in the first place but comes this November it’s time to clean house, vote them all out and replace with new and lets start rebuilding a new effective government who REALLY serves the citizens of the United States of Amwerica. When has government EVER got anything right, WHEN? Never!! is the answer.. Only the those who rely on the government, we don’t need government they need us..

  • Al Sieber

I could see this coming years ago. it seems the Obama adm. is working over time to steal our liberties and I’m beginning to think this Nov. might be our last chance. Bob, I agree with you about some of the “Trolls” on the site, and I don’t understand why they’re so aganist freedom and the constitution. thanks for bringing this to our attention ,though we suspected it.

  • Susan

Here we go again. Another mindless politician taking the rights away from people. What’s next ? Maybe they will require that the FTC force EVERY seller of goods, food included, to prove that the food will not harm the persons eating it. Ridiculous. We have biggger problems. Lets stop that gigantic oil gusher in the Gulf, which could destroy a very large portion of our food chain – not to mention the incomes of millions of people. The government just sits idly by and lets this occur, without taking positive steps. Lets get out the National Guard and every Coast Guard member (active duty or not) and stop that leak. It can be done. Why it isn’t is a mystery —just look for the money ! We need to curtail the abuse of power that is happening in our government and curtail it NOW.

I take a thousand units of vitamin E each nite for my diabetes and it keeps it at about 100 +_10 points. I have proven this to my Dr. by making an appointment two weeks apart and stopping the E and my levels will raise over 30 points. I have then started back on the E and watched my levels drop back the 30 points. you think the pharms are gonna want me to continue taking it? nah nah!!

  • JC

Gee this wouldn’t have anything to do with BIG PHARMA being the biggest lobby inside the Beltway would it?
These good and honest Congressmen couldn’t possibly be getting any goodies form certain Corporations now would they?
God forbid there should be any competition to the pills that are cranked out with warning like “Side effects may include Death”.

  • spoonerist

Government is out of control at all levels. And remember, government is the people who are running it at the moment. So let’s not hesitate to label the culprits as evil criminals. No pussyfooting anymore!

  • http://gmail i41

Waxelnose looks just Chucky Cheese mascot. Another shining example of socialist crooked dems finally showing their total beleifs. They beleive government total control over everything. Srill don’t think all democrats are socialist communists and want a even stronger EU style government?

  • Michelle

More government control, more socialism on the way. I had heard provisions like this were in the finance reform bill, which have nothing to do with finance. In fact the finance reform bill was solving no problems in the financial world, but instead gives the government more control over our lives and more intrusion into our personal and confidential information. What about OUR civil rights! Everyone argues how the AZ immigration law is against the civil rights of illegals, but who is voicing the civil rights violations against the citizens of the U.S. with every over-reaching, unconstitutional bill they continue to pass and force on American citizens.
I personally take a number of natural alternatives as the prescription versions have caused me serious side effects. Even my dogs are on alternative natural remedies. If the government removes these alternatives then I will not have any treatments available. Since many foods and herbs can be used as alternatives, are they then going to control those items too? I use things like pineapple, hemp oil, nettle and other herbs that really have helped medical conditions without side effects. When does the regulation and control stop?

    • Richard Pawley

Michelle (love your name by the way) it stops when the socialists have created their dream world, a one world money (that will be the solution that those in power come up with after they have crashed the world system of fiat make-believe money or the coupons printed by each government that everyone calls money) this by the way is being speeded up by our bought and paid for Congress (with only a handful of exceptions apparently) who are spending us into at least 200% inflation, the most hidden of taxes. Food and fuel will TRIPLE based on what they have already spent and our only hope of it not being a whole lot worse is if we can have a dramatic upheaval at the polls in November and replace most of those in Congress with all new faces who are not lawyers! If you want an eye-opener try to get hold of a copy, even in paperback of my last book, “THE LAST DAYS OF THE LATE GREAT UNITED STATES and the Great Famine that Followed”. It is not politically correct but it could save your life if you take it seriously. In the meantime look into the following nutrients in addition to all natural food based vitamins and minerals and investigate the benefits on line of the following: Yaeyama Chlorella (or any brand Chlorella), Vitamin D-3, Neptune Antarctic Krill Oil, Muscadine Grape Seed (if you have high cholesterol) Hawthorne (if you have high blood pressure) natural iodine, and Magnesium. There are probably a few other things that are necessary to stay well and away from doctors and hospitals but I have found these to be indispensable. Also do all you can to learn about non-perishable foods. To much to tell but there is time enough to prepare if you begin learning all you can now. Things are not going to get better for a long long time. Remember to vote in November and God bless you.

      • Steve N.

        Mr. Pawley,

I happened to be poring over past issues of the PLD and happened to stumble across this one. I must confess that I was very pleased that you plugged your book here. Otherwise I would have never become aware of your work. Immediately upon reading your bio and the review, I resigned myself to purchase this book ASAP. Bravo! And thanks again! I can’t wait to read it!

  • Raggs

I have a feeling this is just yet another step towards socialism.

  • Dave

This Admin. is going to start a civil war. In the infamous words of George Bush, I say, bring it on!
Only about 20% of Americans agree with these people. All of the people I know that voted for Obama are either ashamed of themselves or, won’t even admit that they voted for the usurper.
After we take back control of this country there better be trials against these people. This can never happen again and the next congress better have the CAHOONA’S to get rid of these people once and for all! These people need to be behind bars. If a business tried doing the things this congress has done they would lock em’ all up and throw away the keys.

  • Ronald Johnston

If we don’t stop these marxists, it will be too late in November. I am afraid we are headed for another bloody civil war, us against California.

    • DR. D

It’s just a matter of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • JC

Or rather, us against the banker/globalists.

  • DR. D

How come more Liberals aren’t speek out? Becuase the truth hurts!!!!! This article hits the nail on the head in many ways

  • Average Joe

Something else that the MSM failed to mention…if you work for a small business or own a small business, be ready to be unemployed come January :

    Please read this.

  • Robert Pgh Pa

If you could not see it comming in the seventies than you were sleeping on the job. they tried this then but it was stopped. but everyone wanted the dem in office so they got confidence slowly and with obame they thought they could slip it by and no one would notice. well you see them now and they think they can do whatever they want. thats what dictators do so keep putting them in office and be prepared to say seige heil. we are losing the country faster than you think. just keep them comming. if you do not stand up for your rights you lose them.

  • Robert Pgh Pa

by the way the schools do not teach any more. what i was educated in grade school is what the students in college are receiving now. reason and common sense are bad according to our politicians and teachers. you wonder why we are not a basket case right now but lucky for us the students of the 50s and 60s are still around. when we go good luck america you will need it.

  • http://FinancialReformLegislation Rich on Politics

Mr Waxman is deceptive and misleading. He is a candidate to vote against for using personal supplements in this manner. This is a right and freedom of choice of each taxpayer. Govt is to by the people/for the people. Sneaking this totally separate issue into a Financial Reform Legislation is a Travesty of Justice Henry Waxman is not being truthful with his constituents, he is not representing his constitutents, and if he is not voted out promptly he should be impeached for flagrant misrepresentation. So should any of his colleagues that vote for this legisaltion without first removing inappropriate amendments like our natural supplements. Please spread this far and wide. End

  • DesertPirate

Getting rid of politicians of Waxman’s ilk is of paramount importance this year. 2010 is such an important election year. It really can’t be overstated how important it is to educate yourself about the candidates and VOTE! Many people ask me “how do you know who you’re voting for?” Certainly you can’t be absolutely sure about anyone, but you can do an internet search and a ‘youtube’ search to see what these candidates have written or said in the past (or how they’ve voted if they are previously elected officials.) If it is consistent with what they are saying now, then you’re pretty safe. If not, (John McCain comes to mind) then you go on to the next one.

With all the crap Onumnut spouted and wrote about, people should have known. But since he was “black” they voted for the muslim socialist communist. Some more feel goood democrat socialists, alway push the, he is of minority victimology bull beleif. Even though everyone knew he was a marxist alinshy admirer. McSquirrel has gotten off the normal track of life as he gets older and needs to go, and listening to his daughter I would guess she is parroting her Dad’ds veiw. All politians either dem or reps, need to be sent to pasture at 80 years old. Brain function has went to hell, they are bac to 13 years old as being focused, The idea of Supreme Court judges need to leave at 80 too. No more serving for decades until they die. Dems and rheir muslim cahange and no hope sure is working great for the USA. Looks like the stock market is is really having a tingley feeling for nonAmerican muslim!

  • Virginia B.

I take vitamins and minerals for Type 2 Diabetes.I started about four years ago when so many prescription medications did not agree with my system.I have not regretted going to vitamins and minerals.I have joined the fight to stop those in Congress who try to tell me what I can and cannot take.

If those in Washington think supplements are not good for citizens to take,I would just tell them that the FDA has had to recall hundreds of prescription medicines, some which have killed many people.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      read my post above!

  • Luis T

Waxman is in the pocket of big Pharma. Prostate cancer can’t be too far away for him. By the way, where is Tom Harkin on this? Didn’t he champion the supplement industry in the past? Looks like he’s been bought off too.

  • s c

Herr Stormtrooper Waxman loves Chinese tobacco and keeping Big Pharma’s cash flow constant. His favorite tactic is in catering to hostile governments and Big Pharma. What a guy. So many Americans to betray, and so little time to do it.
Somehow, Chinese tobacco is “good,” but American tobacco is “bad.” It would make more sense if Waxman was a registered agent for the Chinese government. Then we could better understand the depth of his infamy.
As for taking care of America, well, that’s just not important to him. That would interfere with his career and his ‘position.’ Remember, nobody does it “better” than a progressive and wannabe Communist.
The sin of interfering with Big Pharma’s cash flow would make Waxman a mere mortal in certain eyes. So much for priorities, America. So much for Herr Waxman, California. So much for professional turncoats. Just another rich, career politician in Washington’s septic tank, living like a king at our expense.

  • Meteorlady

Nice I need help picking my supplements because after 25 years of taking them I am not qualified to determine whether they help me or not.

The supplement industry has always scared big Pharma and the Dems are in bed with them, so not surprised they are trying to regulate again.

  • timothy green

Thanks for the occult check-ups, it is greatly appreciated. I wonder why these congressmen never compare the “safety” issues of statistically dangerou medical testing, procedures, and unnecessary surgeries. Quite infrequently some teenage wrestler will uveruse a product with an herbal diuretic, or Ma Huang in it and get into trouble, etc. Compare this to the staggering statistics of perforated bowel from gastrointestinal testing, wrong limb amputation, etc. that feed the greedy American middle-man industry of attorneys, lobbyists, and drug company interests, etc. It’s very unfortunate that this is probably yet another example of congressmen voting for their TRUE condstituents, their golfing partners from industry-Wake-up america!!!

  • s c

If American MDs are given the supreme luxury of dispensing prescriptions to those who want supplements, it needs to be said that the vast majority of American MDs slide through medical with ONE course that deals with vitamins, minerals and supplements.
In other words, according to the AMA mantra, a medical school is not the place for an American MD to waste his/her time on such ‘quasi-scientific’ matters. So, how then can anyone justify the idea of letting American MDs dole out supplements via prescriptions, when they are taught that vitamins, minerals and supplements are hokum and are NOT necessary for good health? Can you say routine, non-scientific, AMA HYPOCRISY?
I’ll betcha the big winner in this SCAM is BIG PHARMA.
