MILWAUKEE, Aug. 1 (UPI) — A conservative political organization sent absentee ballot flyers to Democratic voters with misleading information about next week’s Wisconsin recall elections.
Americans for Prosperity sent flyers Democrats in at least two state Senate districts instructing voters to return ballots to officials “before Aug. 11,” two days after the recall elections are to be held, Politico reported Monday.
Matt Seaholm, state director of AFP, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the flyers were not intended to be misleading.
“This just went out to our members,” Seaholm said. “I’m sure the liberals will try to make a mountain out of a molehill in an attempt to distract voters’ attention from the issues.”
However, a Democrat who Politico did not name said the flyers were being distributed to Democratic voters.
“They ain’t AFP members, that’s for damn sure,” the source said.
We Are Wisconsin, a liberal advocacy group, said voters have filed complaints with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, alleging violations of state election law.
“This is voter suppression in its purest, most vile form,” We Are Wisconsin spokeswoman Kelly Steele said.
The recalls came in reaction to passage of legislation by the Republican-controlled state Senate stripping public employees of collective bargaining rights. If Democrats get a net gain of three seats, they will regain the majority in the Senate, which the GOP controls 19-14.
