Experts: Al-Qaida Reprisal ‘Easier Said Than Done’

Since President Barack Obama announced Osama bin Laden’s death, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that Americans are in more danger from terrorism than ever.

Most recently, Homeland Security released a statement urging citizens to beware of “lone individuals,” that are “unburdened by organizational constraints that can slow operational decisions by established terrorist groups.”

But many analysts believe that the threat may not be as immediate as officials would lead Americans to believe. An article on CNN.com says that, while al-Qaida has certainly threatened retaliation, “that’s easier said than done.”

“Better intelligence has made it more difficult to launch coordinated attacks in the United States and Europe. In the last decade, U.S. surveillance of would-be jihadists, and their movements in and out of the country, has improved dramatically,” the article said.

“For now, al Qaeda’s (sic) core leadership is probably focused on survival, anxious that the ‘treasure trove’ of Abbottabad might give away its refuges and tactics.”
