Expert offers tips to protect vision throughout summer and every day

Expert offers tips to protect vision throughout summer and every day Sunny summer days present particular danger to the eyes, but one expert says simple and effective steps can prevent bigger problems later in life.

Dr. Galen Kemp, president of Texas Ophthalmological Association (TOA), says proper care and caution can help people avoid serious eye diseases and possible blindness.

"Something as simple as remembering to wear your sunglasses can delay the development of cataracts," he stresses.

In time for the summer, TOA has published a tip sheet that says that in addition to sunglasses on a bright day, proper eye protection should be worn during sports events, such as hockey and baseball games, as well as during home repairs, gardening and cleaning.

It further suggests that lifestyle changes can have beneficial effects as studies have shown that smokers are more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD) than people who are not.

Nicotine also increases the risk for developing cataracts.

Dietary modification can also help. For example, leafy green vegetables are highly recommended due to the fact they are vitamin-rich and deficiency can seriously impair retinal function and therefore the quality of vision.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston recently published as study which found that a combination of vitamins B6 and B12 and folic acid may decrease the risk of AMD in women.
