Ex-Police Chief Dies After Stun Gun Shock

Ex-Police Chief Dies After Stun Gun Shock

A former Pennsylvania police chief died after being shocked with a stun gun following a fight at a casino and a short police chase, state troopers said.

Darryl L. Briston, 49, the former head of the police department in Rankin, officially died of natural causes — a heart attack, investigators said — about 24 minutes after an incident between Briston and his estranged wife’s companion, who he saw at Meadows Racetrack and Casino in North Strabane about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Briston and the companion began to fight and casino security called local police. Briston fled the scene and North Strabane police chased him for about a quarter-mile, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday. After catching up to him, police said they ordered Briston to put his hands behind his back. He refused and was shocked with a stun gun after a verbal warning, police reports stated.

After being shocked, Briston cooperated. As he was being walked back to the casino, Briston said he couldn’t breathe. Police called paramedics who rushed him to a hospital, but doctors pronounced Briston dead.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Briston was fired from his law enforcement job in Rankin after being convicted in federal court of theft and obstruction of justice. He stole more than $6,000 in cash seized as evidence in a case, then falsified records to cover up the theft.

He served more than three years in federal prison as a result.

He was also convicted by an Allegheny County jury of pocketing $1,334 from a man who broke the windshield on his police cruiser. Briston cashed the check for the repairs, but never had the work done on the city-owned vehicle. He was sentenced to probation concurrent with his federal sentence in that case.

State troopers said the investigation into Briston’s death was ongoing, but was being considered a result of natural causes.

Not knowing all the particulars of the incident, it is difficult to determine, on my part, if the police were justified in using the taser or not.
However, and please pardon the language, but when in the Hell did getting struck by a taser become a Natural Cause in death. That is just a pile of Buffalo Bagels, and it sounds to me like its COVERUP TIME.

      I absolutely agree.

    So much for “non-lethal”

    • Rodney Roberts

Exactly, non-lethal! That’s what the police want you to believe. When I had heart by-pass surgery, they restarted my heart with an electric jolt from two paddles. That jolt can also upset the rythem of the heart. The police are all too eager to use these “non-lethal” devices and they obviously set them up on high power. How many more people are they going to kill.

sounds like a dead troll to me……….

Sounds like a re-run of many stories we are hearing about police and their “little stunners!”

It was a bad decision to give law-enforcement these lethal weapons. When they use a taser on a 90-year-old, bedridden woman, as has been done, the officers need to be fired! Many times we hear that people are stunned after they have obeyed the officers commands..

The heart is run by electrical impulses. When shocked with electricity these impulses can be disrupted and the heart malfunctioins. It is not surlprising people die…

    • BobfromSoCal

The tasers not only interrupt the impulses to the heart. They also cause the muscles to dump lactic acid into the blood which lowers the bloods pH level. This factor in and of itself can cause a heart attack. The police already know this but use these lethal weapons for minor offenses.

Another case of swinish murderous cops killing someone–this time one of their own who differed from the murderers only in that he was caught.

  • porterv

The murderous goons in blue strike again. They assassinate citizens and the system covers for them. How many of these killings do we not even hear about?.Shoot a man with an electrical charge and his heart stops and that’s natural charges, yeah right. When a lineman touches the wrong wire and is killed, is that natural causes too?

  • ranger09

Well at lest this time it was one of their own, This time maybe justice was served, And maybe the taser was well used in this case.Tasers are like firearms to a Policeman, JUST cant wait to shoot someone.

    • 45caliber

Tasers were meant to be the next to last resort of a policeman. Instead it has become their first resort to control someone. After all, the policeman doesn’t want to risk getting his hands dirty.

      • c m field

they use tasers as if they were toys! they show no respect for human beings, yet regardless of how they act or treat others they feel entitled to respect! I know there are many police that are wonderful and deserving of our respect but the parasitic filth out there [that have no business even working among the public] make all police look bad! I wish the good cops could spend more time banding together to get rid of these dirty cops so our communities could once again trust the police and work together to make the world a better safer place!

  • Sgt. Schutz

Oops! Did I do that! Here’s how it’ll go down. Family of the deceased will recieve a tidy sum of money as settlement for wrongful death. This former police chief, at least based on your description, sounds like a real crook. And probably a troublemaker too. My guess is he became a little too beligerent while being collered and unfortunately suffered the consequences.

    What goes around, comes around!

  • c m field

How did tasers ever get into the hands of these unstable people? I’ve seen time after time innocent old ladies being tased and little dogs shot and killed by these nuts! Yet nothing seems to happen to them! When is it enough? What ever happened to my America?

    • Bob Hauser

It got chewed up by sociopaths like this Briston dirt bag (sterling character) and spit out in the gutter.

  • 45caliber

A stun gun is not “natural causes”. And all death can be attibuted to heart failure. After all, that is the very definition of death. When your heart fails to work, you are dead. The cause of that heart failure is what is sought – and what the police are apparently glossing over.
