Essential Fatty Acids Can Help Reduce PMS

January 19, 2011 by

Essential fatty acids can help reduce PMSA study recently published in journal Reproductive Health has reported that the consumption of one to two grams of essential fatty acids daily can help alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Researchers divided 120 women into three groups: One group consumed a one-gram capsule daily of the fatty acids, another took two grams and the third group was given a placebo.

Of the three groups, the women who consumed two grams of the nutrients each day had the best results, especially after a 6-month period. However, participants taking a one-gram capsule still experienced benefits compared to the placebo group.

The women taking essential fatty acid supplements were given a combination of gamma linolenic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, other polyunsaturated acids and vitamin E.

The Physicans Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says linolenic and linoleic acids — or omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids — are essential to liver and kidney health, proper immune system function, healthy skin and prevention of depression, in addition to relieving PMS.

Omega-6 fatty acids are found in leafy greens, nuts, grains and some vegetable oils, according to the PCRM. Foods such as flaxseed, canola oil, soybeans, walnuts and wheat germ are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
