Emotional Survival And Stress Relief In A Disaster

Emotional Survival And Stress Relief In A Disaster

Taking deep breaths relieves stress.

We live in a very unpredictable world. There are so many wars. And there is so much hatred (especially among religions), so much violence, so much rage, so much fear of the government, so much fear of the future, so much fear of losing our money and materialistic possessions, and so much fear of losing our loved ones. How do we make it through tough times? What is it going to take to make mankind realize that we are destroying our planet and the very societies that live on it?

How do we find peace within ourselves and stop animosity between races, religions, cultures and relationships? How do we live in a troubled world and make it a better place? If we revert to living like our forefathers, who lived off the land and promoted peace, we could do our little part in reversing the negative energy and make this world a more peaceful place. If this thought went viral and billions of people read it and caught the vision there would be a new harmony that could save mankind and the planet.

It sounds too good to be true; but if we start now to do our part, then future generations can live in peace.

Personal Responsibility

Taking back our power means taking total responsibility for our own lives. We must never allow ourselves to become victims and blame someone else because something happened to us. We must all be self-reliant, self-sufficient and responsible for ourselves first. We cannot control what others do — only what we do.

Do not make the mistake of thinking the government, the church, your neighbors or family will save you in a crisis. I like to live by the motto “if it is to be, it is up to me.”

How is this done? It starts within every human being. We have no control over anyone other than ourselves. We must be balanced emotionally so we can handle life’s challenges and disasters. If we are balanced within our own selves, we can help others who are in need.

Disasters Happen To Good People

Fear of the future based on the past is what holds us back from moving forward.

Emotional trauma can be caused by any number of events in our lives. It’s not the event that gets the best of us, but how we handle it after it happens that matters.

  • What would you do if a tornado ripped your house apart, and all that was left was a pile of rubble?
  • What if you lose a family member to death?
  • How would you face divorce or a breakup of a relationship?
  • How would you face an economic crash, not knowing where your next meal is coming from or how you will pay your bills?
  • What if the government went bankrupt and no one got their Medicaid, Social Security checks or welfare?
  • What if you had an emergency medical condition that leaves you thousands of dollars in debt and unable to work?
  • What if you or your spouse loses your job or one of your children loses his job and moves home with his spouse and children?
  • What if a fire burns up all our worldly possessions?
  • What if someone harms one of our family members?
  • What if your bank closes its doors and you can’t get out your money?
  • What if your retirement money gets lost in a stock market crash?
  • What if? What if?
  • Can we find it within ourselves to start over?

There are so many unforeseen disasters. Many people I talk to every day are in fear. At least one or more of these things probably will happen to each of us at some point in our lives. I know the government is doing many things that are harming the people. I know there are evil people conspiring to do harm at all costs. We may fall victims to these evil designs, but we will not remain victims.

We can face the future better because of the emotional trauma we have already been through in our lives. We need to know how to handle situations like this. So what do we do when faced with these overwhelming emotions we have inside of us? I am going to give you some simple techniques or processes that will help balance your emotional state in a crisis situation.

Techniques To De-Stress

I am a licensed massage therapist and hypnotherapist, and I have learned many different processes that can calm someone down if they are in stress. Fear is the No. 1 cause of stress in any situation. I believe that if we practice skills of peace and calming that we can face any situation that may occur in our lives.

Take A Deep Breath

Take a deep breath into the lungs and release it. Continue it again and again until you feel the pressure-relief valve letting off steam and releasing the stress. I like to do it lying down in a comfortable position. With every breath I take in, I visualize the pressure of the negative feeling; and as I release the breath, I visualize the stress releasing. Doing this for five minutes straight will bring a peaceful, calming feeling to our souls that will help in a time of crises. It also helps children to calm down when something unpleasant has happened to them. It is a simple form of self-hypnosis. This skill is invaluable in a crises situation because remaining calm is very important. If we can keep our wits about us when others are suffering, we can help others instead of looking for someone to help us.

Tapping PointsTapping To Relieve Stress

There is a tapping technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Try this stress-relief technique for any issue that comes up. Use the breathing technique while tapping and repeating the affirmations three times on each part of the body stated.

  1. First state the negative feeling or belief. Write it on a piece of paper, then turn the negative feeling into a positive thought and write it down also. For example: “I am stressed out” turns into “I am calm and peaceful.
  2. Repeat the words “I am calm and peaceful” three times, tapping with your middle three fingers above each eyebrow. Use your right hand above the right eyebrow and your left hand above the left eyebrow. Continue tapping as you repeat the phrase “I am calm and peaceful.” Move to the side of the eye and repeat the process.
  3. Move to the bone just under your eye socket and tap again repeating the same message three times.
  4. Move to the bone under the nose and above the upper lip. Then to the chin bone, tapping under the lower lip. Use both hands as you tap.
  5. Move to just below the collarbones on the chest and tap on both sides. Continuing to repeat “I am calm and peaceful.”
  6. Tap under both armpits and repeat again.
  7. Tap on the inside of each hand, on the side of the palm and below the little finger. By the time you are finished with tapping each position, the message you are repeating will be imprinted in your subconscious mind. You will be amazed at how the stress releases out of the body.

PEACE WITHIN COMMUNITY COMES FROM HONEST DISCUSSION. NO ONE WANTS TO BE HONEST ABOUT THEIR VALUES OUT OF FEAR OF RIDICULE.

A GREAT EXAMPLE IS ONLINE DISCUSSIONS. WHEN I MAKE COMMENTS ON WEBSITES, I USE MY REAL NAME. ACCORDING TO WHAT I HAVE HEARD, ONLINE COMMENTS UTILIZING A REAL NAME LAST FOREVER. I STAND BY EVERYTHING I TYPE. I AM SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MY “REPUTATION” – NO ONE ELSE. YET, MOST PEOPLE UTILIZE A MONIKER AND SAY A VARIETY OF “UNSAVORY” THINGS – LIKE, THE OLD SAYING GOES, “Throwing a rock and hiding your hand.” IT IS QUITE SAD WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY IN WHICH ONLINE COMMENTS CAN “BAR” A PERSON FROM GETTING A JOB OR PROMOTION. SO, THE PERSON IN THIS PREDICAMENT IS FORCED TO “STEW” AND “STRESS-OUT” BECAUSE THEY FEEL A NEED TO HIDE. NO JOB IS WORTH THAT.

PEOPLE OF VARIOUS RACES AND RELIGIONS DESPERATELY NEED HONESTY WITH EACH OTHER. YES – THERE WILL BE FALLOUT, BUT, CHAOS USUALLY SUBSIDES.

As usual, lts of sense from Peggy. Of course, believing that mankind will make a u turn from his materialistic and misguided ways and actually make an effort to examine the stupidity of his actions is no less a ‘ pipe dream ‘ than believing people will stop hating one another for whatever reason. Lack of focus and understanding will most certainly lead to the demise of ‘ us ‘a and the few like Peggy and presumably Steve, who actually find a use for their brain are wasting their time hoping that ‘ billions will get the message and really change their ways. The mere fact that there are so few comments here is proof positive that folks are more into aggression and confrontation than reading anything about real value and those precious elements forming part of our existence that actually make life worth living and that excludes great financial wealth and specifically includes wisdom, love, courtesy and understanding, none of which can be bought. Those that realize the dangers which we face by neglecting the severe problems we face by destroying our environment recklessly are few and far between and are largely scorned as ‘ fools “. So be it and although I am far from a Bible thumper, some words in Revelation… “If all who are called after my name would lift up their eyes and pray and turn from their wicked ways and seek His face then will He forgive them and He will heal their Land.”
Is that how we perceive ourselves? As truly worthy of forgiveness? Just wondering. All the disasters mentioned above I have endured and survived, I really managed to do that by adjusting my ‘ start ‘ to include the full understanding the difference between what I need and what I want, so that my greed and consumerism changed drastically, but hey I am happy, healthy and content, probably more so than when I had all that useless baggage, trouble and worry.

      Actually, peter -
A Lot of us who comment here are older and remember where we heard things that sound like that at a previous time in history. Frankly, it pisses us off that at one time we fell for it, became part of it and now avoid it like the plague that it is. That’s why you can see so many here who ARE confrontational, up front and in the face of stupidity.
We’ve seen this same sort of crap back in the 1960′s and ’70′s. We know what it produced then. We know what it will produce now.
We know how much hurt, pain, horror and misanthropic destruction occured then.
We don’t expect that stupid people advocating stupid things now is possibly going to produce anything other than stupid results now. That’s why, in my estimation, there aren’t a lot of regulars commenting – contrary to your unlearned and naive observation.

Incidently, I don’t think Miss Larson represents the same totallity of stuf that produced the long-haired hippie, dope smoking dubie tokin’ “cool” generation tht is going to break our bank in the next decade.

      • Mike in MI

        However, peter -
I must say this, you do have many parts of your head screwed on pretty well even if it does rattle and rub a little. More experience will take care of that, HOPEFULLY.

  • boyscout

C Horton, STOP shouting; you hurt my ears so that I do not want to listen.
Peggy, So many questions, So much Hippie (the best parts) in your suggestions. Good Luck.

  • Winddrinker

Massage therapy isn’t the answer to the world’s problems…Sorry missy.

What a bunch of baloney! People have become weak, because they have been told they are weak and can’t do things for themselves… Where is that “pioner spirit” where the strength of the people persevered! Hardships were overcome, by people that knew what they had to do to survive and there was no discussion about when the “help” was coming.
Don’t use the words “harmony and peace” when talking about our forefathers, they lived a “rugged life and dangerous life” they carved out of the wilderness with bare hands.

People like Peggy play into these insecurities, that have been instilled in people, by government. This is the way the libs perceive people in this country and they use it to further their control…

Want the world to be better….go to church! Get some morals! Get off drugs! Get an education..a real one..not at the government indoctrination centers. Show respect and take responsibility for all that you do (or don’t do.) Know what you want and fight for it.
Want to keep your freedom, you will have to fight for it, one way or another. Don’t lay down and wish for “harmoney and peace.” Believe me you won’t like the results!

Too bad there couldn’t have been some, “spa music” to go along with this whinning from Peggy and Peter. And, Peter, “buck-up” and be a man, instead of sounding like a whinning girl, a tree-hugging, head-case. You know the only people that think like you are walking around with the OWS crowd.

      Windy -
Do you know if Miss Layton would or does consider herself a “Flower Child” – a la the 1960′s and ’70′s free love movement, Bill Ayers/Bernardine Dorn (terrorists), the SDS, Black Panthers, Timothy Leary (LSD), an absolute maelstrom of drug related disease, deaths and addicton…among the lesser things. There were other things which resulted in VD epidemics, AIDS and the Obama insurrection.
Oh, guess what I heard on the news today? I can’t vouch for it yet. Ihaven’t gotten hold of the study…but, long term regular smokers of pot can expect to experience a reduction in their IQ scores.
I expect that’s what happened to Obumtokah…anyone else?

Just wanted to add this, prep reduces stress.

My original article was cut in half because it was too long. Many of the concepts I wanted to get across were cut out. Concepts like “Prayer, forgiveness, and having gratitude for everything we have and experience in this life”. Things that have worked for me in my life, but it sounds like they wouldn’t be accepted anyway.

I believe that personal peace is all we can hope for. I am not naive enough to believe that I can change the world with Massage Therapy or deep breathing. This is one technique to help people relieve stress. I know that I cannot change anything accept the way I personally live, think, and act. I believe peace starts by getting along within families before we can ever get along in neighborhoods, and communities.

The Native Americans did live off the land and had a great sense of family and community. They had ceremonies to promote peace and harmony. It wasn’t until the white man tried to change them, force their religious beliefs on them and take the land from them that they fought back.

The modern day insecurities come from not knowing the vital skills necessary for true survival. Our Pioneer ancestors used what we would call Survival Skills every day. It was normal to them, however most people today don’t even know how to find wild herbs and plants to eat or grow a garden to feed themselves. We have lost the basic skills and have become dependent on grocery stores, society, and the government. There are staggeringly high figures of people on some sort of welfare or assistance. In pioneer days there was not much assistance. You assisted yourself or you died. What will they do when the programs go bankrupt?

The pioneer spirit has been lost in a digital world. Communication is not the same as it used to be. We don’t have to talk anymore, we can text, e-mail, blog and tweet. When we are angry at someone we can block them from Face book. They get the message loud and clear.

Peggy, Good article. It is unfortunate that the people who responded to this article just don’t get it. Dr. Mercola has recommended EFT for a number of years. And according to the number of responses in the comment section of his site, the EFT really works. Thank you for your valuable insight as to how to survive in this crazy upside down world. Oh, by the way there is nothing Hippie about you and your articles at all, just good common sense.

    • http://none Charlie

Man does not live on bread alone ,but on every word from King Jesus , so ,
Praise King Jesus for Salvation and Healing … Acts 2:38 Is salvation …

    • Mike in MI

Ok, Peggy, you don’t deserve what I had written above. I’m Sorry. I apologize if it hurt your feelings…You’re not, not, not a long-haired hopped up, hopped on, hippity-hop hippie misplaced in time to a generation and a half later. AND, Thank God, you’re not a hop ‘n chains Obamaphile, either. Just don’t take too much of it in application to yourself anyway. A lot of the people, groups and stuff are iconic representations of things that often got started with good intents but, somewhere, somehow, some way got frustrated, got off-kilter, got co-opted and went bad. I was part of it at one time.

See, I’ve known too many people in my lifetime who tried to live good, be good, do good, be giving and do it all under their own steam for the sake of their own egos. I’ve watched their lives get ripped to shreds and die sick, penniless or in shame. Such a thing will not be allowed to stand – unless the individual lives like or glorifies the Devil.
The only other alternative is do it as you seem to have chosen: live with integrity, honor, thanksgiving, praise, trying to do right toward God, men and self with your own flair and a certain bravado with a certain prespective. And it seems that’s all right. Just do it with all your heart, with God at the center to help where He can, and in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Learn everything you can, as fast as you can and the “how to” to apply the wonderful word of God to your life. You’ll never have anything to regret, that Way.

Peggy, I totally agree with your idea of everyone taking back their power. I really like the tapping to relieve stress technique. Great read. Thank you.

  • sami

I agree w/ Peggy. Thank-you Peggy for also adding your comment to let people know your article was shorten. Some of the people are missing the point of starting w/ themeselves. To take 100 percent responsiblity for yourself, then go from there. I certainly have learned this lesson and continue to move forward w/ myself and the world in mind. Peggy keep up your articles and ideas. Some will get it and some will not.
Love, light, peace, happiness, hope, harmony to you, all here and the rest of the world.

“Tapping” has Taoist roots, and is in opposition to the Christian belief to depend on God.

    • Mike in MI

      Mary -
Did you know that the word, “Tao”, like “Dao”, like a whole bunch of other names of eastern religions means, “The Way” which is one of the names for the First
Century Church? Jesus Christ referred to himself as, “The way the truth and the life”.
Those who believed in him were called “Followers of The Way” or simply The Way. The word “Christians” came in later in Antioch of Pisidia (Acts 11:26), about 43 A.D.
Certain of the 12 Apostles went to the east and started fellowships.
They probably got corrupted later, BUT the stress relief benefits of tapping could have been learned and started anywhere at anytime.
“Tapping” is a form of massage (percussion). Further there are maps on the body associated with accupressure, acupuncture, various forms of massage, reflexology points and neurological electro-acupuncture (stimulation) which are well known, studied and accepted by real healers all over the world (except traditional American medicine which really doesn’t sell healing, anyway).
God made, formed and created the body. He set up various ways to tend to its needs by mental, physical and spiritual methods. He would have told people how to use the stuff from the very earliest times. If people keep what He teaches them in proper order, perspective and utilization it produces great benefit.
Your insinuation that “tapping” is evil (which is how your post reads to me) because it is associated with The Tao is just nonsense. Baptists seem obsessed that everything that doesn’t conform to their doctrine (or that they don’t know anything about) is probably borne of the Devil.

  • http://www.peggylayton.com Peggy Layton

It ‘s not against my Christian belief . Wow! I’ve never heard that one before.

    • Mike in MI

      Peggy -
You’re far better of paying absolutely no heed to the wicked witch of the east above.
All she has to say about “Tapping” is based on madness and ignorant condemnation.
Romans 8:1 says “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
People like her are constantly going around putting others into various states of condemnation and guilt and fear. Well, First John says that anybody who lives in fear is not perfected (mature) in the love of God…because fear has torment.
They’re generally tormented by something deep and dark in themselves. Pay no heed.
