Economy Is Declining, 39 Percent Of Americans Say

ATLANTA (UPI) — The percentage of Americans who say the economy is turning sour held steady while the percentage who say things in general are getting worse grew, a poll found.

Thirty-nine percent of the public say the economy is getting worse, the same percentage as in August and up 6 points from April, the CNN/ORC International survey released Friday said.

Twenty-four 24 percent say economic conditions are improving, up 5 points from August and the same as in April.

Forth-five percent of those age 50 and older told the pollster the economy was on a downturn, while 34 percent of those under age 50 pointed to an economic slump.

On the country’s overall condition, 6 percent say things are going very well, 35 percent say fairly well, 37 percent say pretty badly and 22 percent say very badly, the poll indicated.

The combined very well and fairly well group, currently at 41 percent, was at 46 percent in September and 50 percent in April. The pretty badly and very badly group, at 59 percent now, was at 53 percent in September and 50 percent in April.

ORC International, part of Opinion Research Corp. of Princeton, N.J., conducted the phone poll of 843 adult Americans Nov. 18-20. The survey’s overall sampling error is 3.5 percentage points.
