EBRI Report Details Americans’ Retirement Income Sources

June 8, 2010 by

EBRI report details Americans' retirement income sourcesIn the current economic climate many Americans are increasingly concerned about their income when they retire. Unfortunately, recent studies do not paint an optimistic picture and show once again the importance of investment in safe assets.

According to a new report released by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), in 2008 Social Security was the largest source of income for those aged 65 and older, accounting for nearly 40 percent of their income on average.

However, given the decades-long mismanagement of Social Security and the lack of reforms that would prevent its bankruptcy, there is no guarantee that future generations of retirees will be able to benefit from it, something which may affect lower-income individuals most.

Hence, some financial experts suggest investing in tangible assets with intrinsic value such as real estate or precious metals. The latter, in particular, can shield people’s life savings from the ravages of inflation, which many believe will result from the growing national debt.

The importance of making a wise retirement savings decision is further stressed by the report’s findings that show that only 13 percent of Americans derive their retirement income from assets, while 19.7 percent rely on pension and annuities.

If people in this country would buy gold and silver and put it away and just forget about it, they would have some way of protecting themselves.right now silver is still a excellent buy. we put to much faith in paper.

There is OME main reason why Americans have realized that retirement is more than a word. At long last, Americans KNOW that they CAN’T count on Uncle Scam to ‘be there’ when they retire.
They finally KNOW that people have to do their own retirement planning, because Uncle Scam is a CON ARTIST, a criminal and a LIAR.
Americans KNOW that Social Insecurity is an under-funded LIE. Career criminals in Washington have made it a career sport and plundered Social Insecurity revenues, and the evil, criminal BASTARDS got away with it.
For the most part, WE ARE ON OUR OWN. Like it or not, most people will decide that when Uncle Scam has to turn to ‘us’ for help (it will happen), Uncle Scam will learn that HE is ‘on his own,’ too. So much for democracy, eh? So much for POLITICIANS and their DAMNED LIES, eh?

    • Al Sieber

      you got that right.

Right on, x.c. – THE FED has ruined this Country by design. This is what happens when you outsource control of your Country’s currency – especially to a Private Cartel who has it “in writing” that they are accountable to NO ONE, as well.

For the life of me – I have no idea how even the greediest of Politicians would sell away control of our Currency – when it puts them (like everyone else) behind the 8-ball, for life.

In my book – all politics is local – and one should be able to go down the local watering hole to discuss events in our Country… and it’s the damnedest thing to find out how many avoid it like the plague.

My point being – when our Countrymen were fighting for our Independence – it was the local saloon they would all get together at for exactly that type of discussion. NOW?

The bottom line on the World Banking Cartel – is that THEY think it’s always been “their money” … no matter what. They’ve been loaning it to us all this time. And, now, they want it back. It’s a cruel little game – relax the lending rules and people start to have a little hope for that American Dream we were told about growing up … then, right on queue, they tighten the rules again (on purpose/by design) and go about confiscating what they say was their(s) all along.

I’ve read all sorts of websites – both mainstream and avant-gard, and all reveal this is the way it’s always been.

Yet – just because something’s a certain way don’t mean that’s how it should be.

Many of you know what was missing and you can hear it in your discussions.

You want to know where your money is?

It is in the union pensions and when they figure out that they do not have the money to afford the retirement of thousands of union employees we will see Greece in the US.

The government is going to have to cut benefits in SS and Medicare.
With these cuts they will funnel our money to the unions until that runs dry…

This letter sent to Tennessee Senator Bill Frist from a retired border patrol agent, and it has more common sense than all the bull being spewed from the Senate, with the exception of a few sensible representatives.

    Dear Senator Frist:

There is a huge amount of propaganda and myths circulating about illegal aliens,
particularly illegal Mexican, Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran aliens.

    #1. Illegal aliens
generally do NOT want US citizenship. Americans are very vain thinking that
everybody in the world wants to be a US citizen. Mexicans, and other
nationalities want to remain citizens of their home countries while
obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment,
medical care, instate tuition, government subsidized housing and free
education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their
loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by
middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American
    residence without paying the price.

    #2. There are no jobs
that Americans won’t do. Illegal aliens are doing jobs that Americans can’t
take and still support their families. Illegal aliens take low wage jobs,
live dozens in a single residence home, share expenses and send money to
their home country. There are no jobs that Americans won’t do for a decent

    #3. Every person who
illegally entered this nation left a home. They are NOT homeless and they
are NOT Americans. Some left jobs in their home countries. They come to send
money to their real home as evidenced by the more than 20 billion dollars
sent out of the country each year by illegal aliens. These illegal aliens
knowingly and willfully entered this nation in violation of the law and
therefore assumed the risk of detection and deportation. Those who brought
their alien children assumed the responsibility and risk on behalf of their

    #4. Illegal aliens are
NOT critical to the economy. Illegal aliens constitute less than 5% of the
workforce. However, they reduce wages and benefits for lawful US residents.

    #5. This is NOT an
immigrant nation. There are 280 million native born Americans. While it is
true that this nation was settled and founded by immigrants (legal
immigrants), it is also true that there is not a nation on this planet that
was not settled by immigrants at one time or another.

    #6. The United States
is welcoming to legal immigrants. Illegal aliens are not immigrants by
definition. The US accepts more lawful immigrants every year than the rest
    of the world combined.

    #7. There is no such
thing as the “Hispanic vote.” Hispanics are white, brown, black and every
shade in between. Hispanics are Republicans, Democrats, Anarchists,
Communists, Marxists and Independents. The so-called “Hispanic vote” is a
myth. Pandering to illegal aliens to get the Hispanic vote is a dead end.

    #8. Mexico is NOT a
friend of the United States . Since 1848 Mexicans have resented the United
States . During World War I Mexico allowed German Spies to operate freely in
Mexico to spy on the US . During World War II Mexico allowed the Axis powers
to spy on the US from Mexico . During the Cold War Mexico allowed spies
hostile to the US to operate freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in 2001
was cheered and applauded all across Mexico . Today Mexican school children
are taught that the US stole California , Arizona , New Mexico and Texas . If
you don’t believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for their
    school children.

    #9. Although some
illegal aliens enter this country for a better life, there are 6 billion
people on this planet. At least 1 billion of those live on less than one
dollar a day. If wanting a better life is a valid excuse to break the law
and sneak into America, then let’s allow those one billion to come to
America and we’ll turn the USA into a Third World nation overnight. Besides,
there are 280 million native born Americans who want a better life. I’ll bet
Bill Gates and Donald Trump want a better life. When will the USA lifeboat
be full? Since when is wanting a better life a good reason to trash another

    #10. There is a labor
shortage in this country. This is a lie. There are hundreds of thousands, if
not millions, of American housewives, senior citizens, students, unemployed
and underemployed who would gladly take jobs at a decent wage.

    #11. It is racist to
want secure borders. What is racist about wanting secure borders and a
secure America ? What is racist about not wanting people to sneak into
America and steal benefits we have set aside for legal aliens, senior
citizens, children and other legal residents? What is it about race that
entitles people to violate our laws, steal identities, and take the American
Dream without paying the price? For about four decades American politicians
have refused to secure our borders and look after the welfare of middle
class Americans. These politicians have been of both parties. A huge debt to
American society has resulted. This debt will be satisfied and the interest
will be high. There has already been riots in
the streets by illegal aliens and their supporters. There will be more. You,
as a politician, have a choice to offend the illegal aliens who have stolen
into this country and demanded the rights afforded to US citizens or to
offend those of us who are stakeholders in this country. The interest will
be steep either way. There will be civil unrest. There will be a reckoning.
Do you have the courage to do what is right for America ? Or, will you bow to
the wants and needs of those who don’t even have the right to remain here?
    There will be a reckoning.

It will come in November of this year. We will not allow America to be stolen by third world
    agitators and thieves.

    New Immigrants
This is a very good letter to the editor. This woman made some good points.

For some reason, people have difficulty structuring their arguments when arguing against supporting the currently proposed immigration revisions. This lady made the argument pretty simple. NOT printed in the Orange County Register ……………….

Newspapers simply won’t publish letters to the editor which they either deem politically incorrect (read below) or which does not agree with the philosophy they’re pushing on the public. This woman wrote a great letter to the editor that should have been published; but, with your help it will get published via cyberspace!

    “David LaBonte”
My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to “print” it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in theOrange County Register:

    Dear Editor:
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today’s American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when
there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country’s flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only, they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country! I’m sorry, that’s not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900′s deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn’t start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

    Rosemary LaBonte

I sincerely hope this letter gets read by millions of people all across the nation!!

  • Hal

You are right on, Lady!!!!!!The problem is that the young people of today have no way of knowing the price that has been paid for the FREEDOM that they now enjoy. When God is eliminated from the equation and the school text books are not permitted to publish the stories of how this GREAT country was founded, what do we expect from this present generation?

    • viktor leben

We need to ammend the Constitution to say “No King but Christ !” ..
That’s what we need to do …..

  • Bobba

I have read a number (not all) of the above letters. The letter from Rosemary cites two major differences between the 1800′s and now. The biggest difference: everybody who was allowed into the United States through Ellis Island was then here LEGALLY! I also know of quite a few people who sent money back to their homelands, but that was to pay for people’s passage HERE!
I could go on at great length on the above but choose at this point to follow another tack- We the People have allowed the Congresses of the past 100 years (the past 50 in particular) to slowly chip away at our liberties under the “general welfare” clause of the Constitution. Even James Madison warned: “Beware the ‘general welfare’ clause,” and he wrote the thing!
We are very close to what has been called a “tipping point,” and We the People need to work within the system to get those liberties back. Look at what has happened because We the People didn’t PAY ATTENTION!
For example, even though it was a socialistic model when it was first conceived, Social Security was NEVER intended to be what it has become. Moreover, if anybody except the Government tried to pull a similar scam, they would be arrested for setting up a Ponzi scheme. Bernie Madoff is small potatoes compared to the size of the Social Security mess, but We the People allowed it.
I have heard a very apt description of insanity: It is “doing the exact same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” We the People elect our representatives, and it has been said that “the people get the government that they vote for” (Jefferson, I think) The only way that We the People can change things is through the power of our vote. We ALL have to be aware of what our politicians DO and HAVE DONE, not what they say. This requires that We the People stay vigilant. To quote Ben Franklin, “we have given (the people) a republic IF THEY WILL HAVE IT!”(emphasis mine.) We the People, not the politicians or the union bosses, are the owners of this Country. We the People need to take better care of it lest we fall into the abyss of socialism, or worse, anarchy. Respectfully submitted

Hal, don’t judge all young people, that they no nothing that was paid for liberty. It depends on what kind of person their parent and grandparents were. If they didn’t bother to acutually work for their pay, or have pride in their schooling or work, they most likely will some spoiled lazy assed idoit that thinks life is just one big screw off party. I have 4 children and their spouses in threee branches of the services. Another 10 neices and newphews and their spouses in the military. All these young people are officers and leaders. The relatives that aren’t in the military are all democrats and a bunch of screw offs, they may have good college grades, but lazy as hell. These kids parents were the anti establishment bozos, who were against any thing called work and difenitely did not nor never will sweat. Every damn liberal is a UN beleiver, and if there was more talking we could all just get along. Sounds just the purple lipped muslim and his radical domistic terrorists, doesn’t it. They are the lazy a–holes that come out of some liberal fag arts colleges, they confurm what sorry bunch of numskulls, the dinks on these colleges perpuate, none stop. Wait till the old hippies who sired another bunch of liberals in the late 50′s and 60′s, who think they have a fine life of leisure when they retire in a few years, will not have anything but worthless green government paper. My grandparents, my parents, and I have told our kids, there will not be squat left after you get to be fifty, but a bunches of green multi-denomination government printed toliet paper for the stool. By land out where you can raise and grow something, to survive and gold will not feed you or shelter you, once it is gone, you are realy screwed. Just the marxist socialist plan, depend on the government and now it has you by the short hairs, and you are a slave to the dictator!

    • viktor leben

You know what ? Those lazy a-holes are now “the establishment”. Your kin in the military are fighting for them…. Now who is the dumbass ?

i41, Those liberals are just laughing at you and your progeny because they feel thay are superior, and you know what ? They are your kids superiors now…..

It’s evolution man ! They are smarter so the smarter rule the dumber….

God bless you i41 and your children……

  • Connie Davis

Wish all of you people could SPELL!!!! You look like idiots (correct spelling of that word) trying to disrespect each other when you can’t spell the word I D I O T…..

  • Robert

it is worse than you think. we will be going to the world to help us in the very very near future and all the people who we have helped will say sorry you can not handle your finances. but we will have only one group of people to blame the parasites in congress and their voting illegal alliens and welfare clients. remember this when you vote and when you need your promised benefits that you paid for and wont see a penny of.

  • Gail Blair

Amen Bobba!!!! Good post I agree 100%

  • Anthony

Since this Article is about Investments and Retirement Incomes…

I have been doing some in-deth self education on the topic.
I would advise that you at least give this one website a look-see.

Why ? They don’t take your money – they advise you on how YOU can do the investing on your own. And, they aren’t all that expensive. Sure, there’s a bunch like this one. But, I’ve found Porter Stansberry walk’s the talk.

With their advice, I am circumventing Wall Street – no fees, no commissions / other than what I pay myself.

I say let’s use the system to our advantage… If there’s an option tograb back some of that loot, why not do so (?)

  • Adan Boerboom

But not one single thing that you said gives the government the right to stop the mosque. Protest the mosque. Do creative things like building the gay bar next door, but the President was 100% right when he said that they have a First Amendment right to build it there.
