Eat Less Salt And Help Your Heart

Cut out the salt from you life for a healthier heartMany people understand the benefits of alternative diets when trying to lose weight, but what about a diet for better heart health? New research published on the British Medical Journal’s official website highlights the fact that decreasing one’s sodium intake may be good for the heart.

Professors from the University of Warwick in England and the University of Naples in Italy reported that a study of 170,000 individuals within 13 different experiments indicated that individuals could benefit from reducing their daily sodium intake by 5 grams.

This move might decrease the risk of stroke by 23 percent and the risk of heart disease by 7 percent.

The professors further wrote that most of the sodium one eats each day comes from processed foods and does not naturally occur.

One way to better manage sodium levels is to stay away from pre-made meals and to embrace cooking at home. If you are an inexperienced cook, a simple trip to the library or the American Heart Association website can supply you with recipes and tips for successful, low-sodium meals.     I have been using Celtic Sea Salt for years and it is wonderful. It takes much less b/c of the intensity. Yummm!!!

    that’s bologni. Human body needs SALT. Now the evil governments use refined salt (or table salt) which ha snothing beneficiary for the body. Sea Salt, on the contrary has almost 75 different minerals NOT removed by refining. Sea salt also has Iodine which is a very importnat mineral for the body. It is known as lower blood pressure and fights inflammation in the heart which causes heart-disease. Eat SAE SALT only! Avoid refined salt, refined sugar (brown sugar is fine), and use unbleached flour, in stead of bleached flour.

    Bob, I’m surprised you let this go through.
    What I recall you saying many times is that Sea Salt is very, very good for us, but the processed salt that one buys from the store has had all the minerals removed and is a bad choice. I have a book written by Dr. David Brownstein called “Salt your way to health”.
    And you yourself tell us you bring home sea water and take it for the salt benefits. What’s going on here? Mary Sue

    Right on MaryLou. Sea salt brought me back to life. The first thing they do when they admit you to a hospital is to give you a saline drip. You need salt to help digest your food or indigestion & flatulence occur which means you aren’t absorbing your nutrients well. A recent buried study shows that 90% of clinically depressed people are dangerously sodium deficient. I was never one to salt anything, but years of strange aches & pains in my elbows & knees & 6 months of strenuous activity resulted in an emergency room visit where I was told if my sodium level got any lower I would have a seizure or a stroke. From then on I have supplemented w/ Hain iodized seas salt, Celtic sea salt, & Himalayan salt. Sea salt saved my life. I always carry a shaker on me & when I feel the symptoms, I take a teaspoon w/ water. If I don’t get results in 20 minutes, I do it again. Peace & Love, Jeff

    Be careful though. much ‘sea salt’ has been overly refined. (and thus most minerals have been removed) I use ‘real salt’ which is mined, but not refined. You also can get mineral drops, or supplements which help supply the 63 required minerals, and maintain healthy Ph. (Joel Wallach says 63, but I’m not sure he knows about all needed minerals.)

    There is an allusion here to most sodium coming from “processed foods and does not naturally occur” but the article is misleading… Unprocessed sea salt or Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt are all good for us. The sodium cloride junk that they sell in most supermarkets has all the good stuff scrubbed out of it leaving only sodium cloride which is not good for anyone. BTW: After they scrub out all the good nutrients, the manufacturers sell them to make more $$$ for themselves…surprise…!!!!

    HelloMaryLou, you’re right. Sea salt is good for us. Table salt isn’t worth the effort it takes to buy and put on the kitchen table. Table salt amounts to a low-grade inferior supplement.
    Sea salt is a very old and proven substance. Even cattle deserve better than table salt. That’s why they get a special type of salt. How are we not better or more deserving than cattle?

    Actually, the real issue is fast foods. They tend to have way too much salt, but tons of people eat it anyway because it tastes good. Too much salt, of any kind, is bad, but it’s a habit for people to eat so much of it. If you want people to eat sea salt instead, tell the fast food companies, they’re the real problem.

    And to S C:

    The reason we are not better or more deserving than cattle is
    (A. We will fall for anything no matter what the studies say (there are still people who think smoking is healthy)
    (B. We eat them so we want them to taste good, not like they’ve been freeze dried for a year and left out in the sun.
    (C. Nobody cared at all till people started getting so fat that their stomachs became folds.

    Terrence, don’t be surprised to learn that Big Pharma is behind any ‘need’ for table salt. Table salt is crap. Drugs tend to be crap. Neither will make you or keep you healthy.
    And when it comes to profit, it is no coincidence that those who want us to believe that table salt is ‘good’ are the same ones who control the FDA. Follow the money trail, and keep your eyes open.

    One maay wonder why the shadow government wants us sick and weak. If they are so “concerned” about our health as they say nowadays, they should BAN table salt, refined sugar and bleached flour, along with preservatives, colorings, artifical flavoring, sweeteners, as well as pesticides, herbicides and enforce stricher rules, laws on environmental dumpings.
    The overpopulation issue is a longtime concern for them. Our health is just money, business for profit, just like our freedoms. More people behind bars brings more fat checks for lawyers, judges, prisonguards, and related “services” such as bailbond agencies, cops…
    Our health, our freedoms are for sale… One may wonder: how long?

    Dear Mary,
    I will continue to advocate against consuming processed foods and table salt. However, I realize that most people will not heed this advice. Those people may reduce their consumption of sodium and processed foods if they read about studies showing a benefit. Sea salt is another story. It provides many benefits and is essential.

    I dont get it and I’m not yelling at you persay it’s just when they talk about the fact that pot is illegal they say who is the government telling me what to put into my body!!! now here is your statement that the government should outlaw refined sugar and refined table salt. Along with bleached flour you have a sizable list of things to outlaw,and I didn’t hear a whimper from the “pot” crowd!!! I wonder why?

    I for one are against any government legislation.
    They are telling us now what we should and can’t eat, smoke, drink, take, etc, and want to have them tell us more of what we should/can’t do ? Besides they really do not any constitutional grounds to do so (even thought they get away with it) is our biggest problem today. Best not to impose on the freedoms we are supposed to have. Better to educate than to legislate, but then the government would loose all their power, wouldn’t they :-)

    If the amount og money spent on legislation, law enforcement, trying to combat issues with people doing to themselves what they want (when does no harm others), were spent on educating the facts that like the ones that are discussed in this and other forums, we would be able to combat more than 500 percent more issues with health than is currently done.

    The government really has no basis to prevent anyone eating, taking and/or smoking anything that occurs in nature (selling is another issue), Personally responsibility has been dismissed too often today, replaced by more government control over our daily lives, especially when it comes to our health, Greed for wealth and power has taken a forefront to actually caring about people today.

    However, I am not putting the entire blame on the government, whose leadership has committed treason against their own people, but I put the majority of the blame on the people in this country as a whole, including myself. All I have to do or anyone has to do is look in a mirror and ask not what I have done, but what I have I not done to help prevent many of the issues we face today with our government.
    We are all too busy, too lazy, or whatever the reason to keep up with what is going on and help prevent the things we do not want to happen.
    The old adage, the squeaky wheel get the oil, too many times a minority people/group whines about what they want and no one else speaks up to counter the issues and behold we have a new unwanted law for all.
    When was the last time, or how many times this past year did anyone write to their congressman ?
    I am guilty, I, only one, sad, very sad indeed.

    80% of the sodium that we as a population consume comes from processed foods (including fast food). Yes, sodium does occur naturally in plant foods that come from the ground, and we can get naturally occurring “sea salt” in eating heart healthy fatty fish. A high sodium intake does not only increase one’s risk of heart attack and stroke, but it is associated with kidney disease, hypertension, gastric cancer, decreased blood sugar control, osteoporosis, and other diseases. Salt is also an appetite stimulant. (So beyond the link between sodium intake and blood pressure, salt can still be detrimental to health). The link between sodium intake and heart health is indisputable when blood pressures improve more dramatically in patients on a no-salt vegetarian plus fish diet than on medications, and patients are actually able to reverse heart disease as well.

    Everything should be moderated.. Salt can be dangerous, but we do need it.

    People should be smart enough to maintain the ratio. We actually need different types of minerals. and yes they must be in balance..
