Drinking Cherry Juice May Help Insomniacs Sleep BetterIndividuals who are having trouble sleeping and who are not interested in taking any over-the-counter or prescription medications may want to consider consuming cherry juice on a regular basis, according to a new study.

American researchers have reportedly found that drinking tart cherry juice every day may help people reduce the severity of insomnia and allow them to incur fewer sleep interruptions throughout the evening.

For the study, a research team from the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Rochester and the VA Center of Canandaigua enrolled 15 adults who were suffering from various degrees of insomnia, and assigned them to drink 8 ounces of tart cherry juice every morning and evening for a period of two weeks. Afterwards, participants were given a placebo juice drink that did not contain cherry extract.

Following another two weeks, the respondents were asked to record the effects that each beverage had on sleep habits.

The investigators found that patients reported significant reductions in the severity of their insomnia and improvements in the efficiency of their sleep patterns when they drank cherry juice. Consumption of the control drink showed no such benefits.

"When consumed regularly, tart cherries may help regulate the body’s natural sleep cycle and increase sleep efficiency, including decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep," said Russel Reiter, one of the world’s leading authorities on melatonin, an active ingredient in cherries. "And because cherries are so rich in other antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, you get other important health benefits."

    You made several good point pertaining to concentrated tart cherry juice; its value as a sleep aid, loaded with antioxidant (known as ORAC) and that it contains anthocyanins (that help block the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes causing pain reaction in the body).

    1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of concentrated tart cheery juice will supply 3,657 ORAC units. Nutrition experts estimate that a person needs to consume 3,000 – 5,000 ORAC units a day.

    Most of us just do not know what we do not know, so supply information like this is very helpfull for starting the research process. Thanks

    where do I find tart cherry juice? Most juices are full of sugars, etc. I have a juicer but what kind of cherries should be used?

      Carla, you can find tart cherry juice at – that’s where we’ve been buying it from for 2-3 years now, directly from the MI farmers.

      Linda, to find tart cherry juice concentrate go to . Also, additional info on melatonin from tart cherries and research artcles can be found on our web-site . You cannot juice them yourself because it is juice concentrate where 1oz=100 cherries, in addition tart cherries are not sold in stores, only sweet bing cherries, so check out the web-sites I gave you.

    Where can I find tart cherry juice? I want to try it desparately!! I have trouble sleeping because of menopause anyway, but I’ve just suffered through a severe lung infection where I had to take lots of prednizone which in turned caused me to have to take sleeping pills to sleep. 6 months later I’m off the prednizone and sleeping pills (for only 2 weeks now) but I can’t sleep. I NEED HELP PLEASE!

    From my personal experience:
    There are many things that affect sleep and many things to help. Cherry juice is probably very healthy, but it is expensive. The melatonin in cherry juice can be obtained a lot more cheaply as a supplement. The spice Nutmeg helps you to stay asleep…just sprinkle a small amount (much LESS than a 1/4 teaspoon) on your hand and lick it off at bedtime.
    Valerian is great to make you drowsy and fall asleep. The proper balance of calcium and magnesium is essential for sleep. Vitamin C helps with toxicity which might cause sleep difficulties…but always take C with calcium and/or magnesium…if the C is the unbuffered kind..ascorbic acid.
