Dried Fruits Equal To Fresh, Report Shows

Looking for a sweet, healthy snack? A new report says dried fruits offer the same benefits as fresh fruits.

A report by internationally recognized researchers at the 30th World Nut & Dried Fruit Congress on May 21 concluded that traditional dried fruits such as dried apricots, dried apples, dates, dried figs, raisins and prunes should be included side by side with fresh fruit recommendations by policy makers around the world.

“Dried fruits are great sources of total and soluble fiber in the diet,” said Dr. Daniel D. Gallaher of the University of Minnesota, one of the presenting researchers. “Just as fresh fruit, they have low glycemic index values and can play an important role in preventing different aspects of metabolic diseases.”

The report addressed concerns that dried fruits contain more concentrated amounts of sugar than fresh. Consumers should pay attention to portion sizes when eating dried fruits, as it’s easy to overdo it.

Dr. Arianna Carughi, Health and Nutrition Research Coordinator for the California Dried Fruit Coalition, said that in addition to their fiber benefits, dried fruits are a great source of potassium. Dried fruits also contain a range of specific vitamins and minerals, unique to each fruit.

Dried fruits are also an excellent way to satisfy your sweet tooth, according to Michael Cutler, M.D., editor of Easy Health Options. He says to add dried fruit to your food for a healthy sugar substitute.

    All these “experts” you listed are financially attached to dried fruits. “Consider the source.”

      I agree. I am a nutritionist and I am very surprised by this article. Of course, the truth lies in the sentence about portion control. But in reality, if you open a bag of dried apricots, are you really going to stop after eating two of them? Herein lies the real problem. For the kind of portion control they are talking about you have to think of the dried fruit as being equivalent to the regular undried fruit. I work with diabetics and this article would be a disaster for them of they read it and believed it.

        Thank you for the common sense ! There is a new one coming out of the wood work every day now days that thinks they know better for us than we do. Don’t you know everybody other than them is stupid and incapable of rulling their own lives ! I wish what they would finally go after is all the dyes and flavorings and chemicals in our food today. Today people are busy and using a lot of prepackaged foods and they are full of everything including the kitchen sink ! This stuff is not good for us. So all you do gooders out there that want a real cause that will contribute to everyones health, go after the companies that peddle all the food dyes and preservatives and additives. I mean reall is it really necessary to put plaster of paris in our bread ?

      It also needs to be said that if the fruit was dried without heat, it would be equivalent to fresh because it would still contain the enzymes necessary to aid in digestion. If fruit has been dried with heat, then the enzymes have died & you’re eating cooked fruit, which is NOT equivalent to fresh.

        True, but it doesn’t keep as long before going bad ! Of course then we have the fruit that is treated with sulfur while it is being dried so as to keep it’s color ! Hope your not allergic to sulfur !

          Can you just not like it and find dried fruit without sulfur?

          I have tried to find it in regular grocery stores the only place I can find it without sulfur is the high priced specialty stores.

    As i understand it when you change the physical nature of something you change its chemical properties as well. Do they really have the nutrients as Fresh, I am inclined to not believe so.

      I understand the way it works is no not quite. You have fresh, then dried, then canned in that order. So for anyone to say that they are equal to fresh in vitamins and such is not really true. They are close. Some are against canned because they say the fruit or vegetable you can looses a lot in the liquid it is canned in, but then you simply use the liquid too. I use the liquid in the fruit jars as part of the liquid in making jello or my family eats it along with the fruit and as for the liquid in the vegetables I use that in my gravy or sauces in cooking or sometimes I save it in a container in the freezer and put it in soup broth when I make soup ! Waste not want not !


    Keep a running updated list of all lavatory facilities if you eat dried fruits every day…..damn good but dangerous.

    From everything I’ve gathered from nearly a half-century on this planet is that dried fruit and vegetables are healthier than their fresh counterparts, due to their nutrients being more concentrated.
    Why are Raisins recommended for Diabetics but Grapes aren’t?
