Dickens Must Be Spinning In His Grave

Dickens Must Be Spinning In His Grave

My two Christmas wishes are that Santa were real and money could be created out of thin air. The media tell me they can come true; I just have to believe in the President.

They warn of a dastardly Scrooge promoted by the Tea Party ruse. But if Barack Obama has his way, we will be stuck with him for another 1,800 days.

To see his dream come true, Obama Claus is working day and night to drive away economic blues. To explain better I borrowed a classic verse, knowing full well you may think my version much worse.

The unemployed were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of government checks danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

I rubbed my glasses and peered through the lens,
Only to see a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny Dems,
with the tall sprightly driver, so lively and merry,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Barry.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
“Now, Brown! Now, Cardin! Now, Leahy and Levin!
“On, Mikulski! On, Reid! On, Frank and Pelosi!

“To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
“Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
Propelled by fresh money, the coursers they flew.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little goof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Barry came with a bound.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Only after pumping out money did he turn with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his friends gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Vote for me next fall, and to all a good-night!”

The Left’s Spin On Dickens

Another Christmas classic was written by Charles Dickens, who was wealthy and renowned when he rushed A Christmas Carol into print in December 1843. The book changed the way the world thought about Christmas. In the 19th century, Christmas was not celebrated to the extent it is today.

The book was immediately popular and it is perhaps the most famous work of literature associated with Christmas. Dickens wrote the story as a condemnation of greed.  Through Scrooge, he wanted to convey an optimistic message that individuals could change and show charity to those less fortunate. The key word is “individuals.” A century and a half ago, the government had no role in taking care of people. Of course, popular culture and the growth of Liberal ideals have changed that.

Take Disney’s animated 3-D incarnation of A Christmas Carol, released during the holidays in 2009.

According to Big Hollywood Blog, Scrooge does not care about the fate of the poor, but he thinks government has a role.

Of course, charity and welfare are different, points out Jonah Goldberg of The National Review. With charity there is freedom of the individual to choose, to weigh the merits of giving and to give to those who will use the help to better themselves.

With welfare there is only government spending taxpayer money indiscriminately, often to the detriment of those who receive funds. Most important is the lack of choice. We all have to pay those who will not pay their own way. It is an entitlement philosophy. Taken to its extreme, it was the dream of another 19th century writer: Karl Marx.

This Christmas more so than on many in the past, we need to be reminded that Hollywood is free to interpret A Christmas Carol or anything else any way that suits its agenda.

Had Marx gotten his way, Hollywood wouldn’t exist and, most likely, Dickens’ great book would be banned. When we consider these truths, do we really want our government to play Santa Claus?

I urge you to have some charity in your heart. I also urge you to oppose the Obama Administration and its plans to spend your money in ways that he and those in his Liberal stable believe are sensible.

Yours in good times and bad,

John, my research says it wasn’t possible for Marx to get his ‘reputation’ without serious help. I suspect that the George Soros or the head puppet master of Europe of that time was told that a certain semi-talented schmuck was hanging out at the British Museum and writing some interesting economic theories.
The same “talent search method” goes for Hitler, but that’s another story. Marx was a first-rate loser. If it wasn’t for the fact that “someone” was looking for a new ‘legend in his own mind,’ we’d never have heard of Marx and his easily-disproved theories.
By the way, the next semi-talented, braindead ‘economics genius’ (and wannabe savior) was J M Keynes. He almost makes Marx seem normal, but that’s another story, too.

Our goverment is becoming a tyrant, outside forces are controlling our leadership, we Americans are losing our rights and becoming slaves of those outside forces. At a certain point we will be forced to act and one of the fastest methods to get there attention:

      STOP PAYING ALL FEDERAL TAXES

We as Americans can quickly bring this out of control goverment to its knees.

        Freedom Fighter…
How does one stop paying their federal taxes? Is this common knowledge stuff, or am I out of touch?

        • FreedomFighter

Once person will make no differance, it would have to be a movement.

How does one stop paying federal tax, depends, just remember you may be arrested and jailed. The key is this 48% get some goverment assistance, goverment runs on the backs of tax payers 52% approx of population. if just half stop:

goverment is strangled for funds, they cant possibly arrest all of them, just continue to pay state taxes and local.

Its a protest action, an effective one, unlike OWS movement whom are just idiots.

Well, in theory you are absolutely right. If enough taxpayers just stopped paying taxes, it would make a difference. BUT before taking that step the movement would have to be in place and the numbers assured. Otherwise, you end up with many folks being jailed by the IRS and nothing having been accomplished. Most of us taxpayers who work hard and want no hand outs from the feds are also people with families, mortgages and those who depend upon us for food, shelter and day to day sustenance. To take action that might land us in jail and put our families at risk is a difficult thing to do. I am just praying that 2012 brings many changes, and now that so many of us are awake, the changes for the better can continue. Or is that just wishful thinking as well?

          • eddie47d

The OWS movement is awake but Freedom Fighter calls them “idiots”.That is why a tax protest plan won’t work because the Freedom Fighters have no intention of bringing Americans together to achieve such a goal. More sour name calling to enhance his conquer and divide ploy.

        • DaveH

As long as the Federal Reserve exists, it would be an exercise in futility to withhold tax payments to the Federal Government. The Government would just borrow the money from the Federal Reserve until our savings and pensions were worthless. Kind of like they’re doing now.

            Military in our streets

Sold machine guns and other weapons to drug cartels to undermine our constitutional rights
A president that has demonstrated anti-american and anti-constitutional behavior and lied to the American public on many occasions
A congress and senate full of communists and American haters

” To conquer, fisrt DIVIDE! ”

Actually, it would not be and exercise in futility…..Dave. Inflation needs to be a managed con to work……if the government simply printed what was required……the effects are equalised….and devaluation is the same for everyone…..

This form of taxation, requires zero paperwork or enforcement….
but it also tends to collapse in fairly short order.

So, you are all wrong here….it can be done one person at a time…it can only be done one person at a time…….and you have already been shown how…….and will be shown again.

First question: Where are the common law and equity courts….Mr. Myer’s, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Paul….just jump right in?

“Do not ask for WHOM the bell tolls………”

          • DaveH

            Wrong Patrick.
It matters a lot to those who’ve saved for years and see their savings become increasingly worthless. It matters for those on fixed incomes who see their incomes diminish in buying power. It matters to creditors who get repaid in worth less dollars. And it matters to taxpayers who see themselves shoved into higher marginal tax brackets, thus losing a higher percentage of their incomes.
If you’d remove your head from the bell, Patrick, and do some studying at mises.org you could learn these things.

      • David Hammond

This government is to broken to be fixed- It has to be redune. Unless people stand up and stand up now- these children dont stand a cance at having any kind of “American Dream”. In short- these traders need to be delt with.

        • FreedomFighter

Believe me, if half of all tax payers stoped paying federal tax, demanded goverment reform – it would happen and happen fast.

The domino effect of lack of funds for goverment would be – shall we say – and eye opener of whom really has the power -

The Governors of the Fifty States need to take back their States’ Rights, as it was in the beginning.

The States can tell the Feds to, “Take a Hike.”
Stop sending tax money to the Feds and waiting for the Feds to send a small portion of that money back, with instructions on how it is to be spent!

The people should decide what is needed in their own States and they make the decisions about what programs to fund. The taxpaying citizens living in the States have a right to benefit from the taxes they pay. Right now, it seems that no taxpayers ever benefit by paying taxes…everyone else in the world seems to be the beneficiaries of our national wealth.

If the Governors could get together and stop all tax money going to Washington, the crooks would be out of business! The politicians should never have had access to a dollar of tax money, let alone, all the power to “tax and spend!” With the power to tax and spend, Congress control this country, along with the ability to steal as much as they want, in as many ways as they can imagine! Taking the money away from Washington would eliminate the severely embedded corruption. Taxpayers would benefit from the taxes they must pay, and the government behemoth would disappear.

        • vicki

States have NO rights. Only Powers. PEOPLE have rights AND powers. We, The People delegated SOME of our powers to the Federal Government and some to the State governments. SOME of the powers we delegated to the Federal Government exclusively. ALL the rest of the powers belong to the people and some of those we delegate to the states.

It’s all there in Black and White.

The 10th Amendment gives rights and powers to the states and the Bill of Rights are given to the people by God. Does the Bill of Rights grant the people free speech, freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, etc?

The answer is “NO”. The Declaration of Independence, which provides the philosophical base of our nation, states very clearly that our rights are granted to us by our Creator (God). The various rights noted in the Bill of Rights were not granted bt the government. The purpose of the Bill of Rights is to prevent the Federal Government from suspending any of those God given rights, including the right to bear arms. Those who claim “Second Amendment rights,” for instance, make a big mistake with such a statement. If the right is granted by the Second Amendment, meaning by the government, it can be taken away by government. If the right is granted by God, only He can take it away. Ergo, your law professor falls flat on their face. Trust a historian and not a lawyer when dealing with the Constitution. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

          • professor

            Vickie:

People only have the Rights or Powers acknowledged by the Federal Government or maybe you have been living off-planet these last few years.. American people have very little Rights or Powers as they have gone in the same dumpster as the Constitution!

We need to go back to where the States were sovereign and they held their Rights (Power if you prefer) close. The Legal system in this country leaves much lacking. It too has been “hijacked” by the power (there is that word you like again) of our shadow government. BTW, lawyers have proven themselves to be a scourge on this Nation…with the twisting of our laws for their own profit, and justice seems to have taken a “vacation.” Our Constitution is neither present in the court room or in congress.

          • Joe H.

            Professor,
That will never happen! The federal dollars speak louder to the states than the people!!! Case in point, look at the states that held out when they lowered the speed limit to 55. the ederal gov. just told them if they didn’t toe the line, they would withhold all fedreal highway repair funds. they soon came into compliance!!

          • professor

            JoeH,

Therein lies the problem with the Feds having total power to “tax and spend.” Federal government tells the States what they “will” do! Those tax dollars are earned by the citizens, that money does not belong to the Feds and until the States get together and tell the Feds to “take a hike” they will continue to be slaves of a tyrannical government…and it gets worse.

The Feds have in so many ways told “the people” that they are of no consequence. If you think you voted in the illegal alien, you are naive. We have an illegal alien bunking in our White House…a foreigner, someone that has no allegiance to this country and in fact, despises White America!

The people have been rendered “powerless.” For all purposes there has been a “coup.” WE have no voice in Congress, they no longer work for the people… The Congress itself has been neutered. The only thing Congress is allowed to do is to vote for whatever “bills” are put on the table by obama. You are kidding yourself if you think differently. It is important that the States extract themselves from the grasp of a regime that no longer serves this country. You said, “That will never happen.” But, my friend, it better because that is the only way to decimate the corruption that is taking down our country. If the people try, there will be martial law declared.
The States can do it legally, but it still won’t meet with horrific resistance.

      • Frank Suszka

We the people are the government. We elected the compost pile currently running our country. As several people said, not paying taxes works in theory. How many Email petitions have you seen that said we should boycott this that or the other? Send endless cards to the ACLU and bog down their mail room. In theory, this works but realistically… It’s a failure. Let’s say that 50% of America stopped paying taxes. This would definitely put a crimp in the program and the horses patootie’s in DC would take notice. There would be a crunch. We would lose our police and fire, seniors who live on that meager pittance they receive would stop getting their checks and they wouldn’t have food or medication let alone a place to live. Crime would escalate. Those on welfare would go out and take what they wanted and you better not get in the way. It’s the domino effect. Kind of like it runs downhill and stops at our shoes, which is the reason they are brown. We voted them in and we can vote them out…

        • professor

          That is naive.

Karl Marx was supported by his chum Frederick Engels, a rich man from birth, and an admirer of Marx’s radical ideas. and also a writer. Karl Mark lost two of his children to starvation because of his reluctance to work for a living.
His wife Jenny of Westphalia supported him entirely. Ordinary people in Cuba used to say that Mark most remarkable achievement was the invention of hunger and dictatorship. Generally hated by the people of any country under communism.

O.K., so no one believes in States Rights, and taking power back from the Federal Government….

      • vicki

I believe the States have powers delegated to them by The People. I see evidence that the Federal government has taken upon itself a LOT of powers that belong to the states. The States do indeed need to show some backbone and take those powers back.

Some states already have. Witness states that have told The Fed that obamacare is not welcome. States that have told the Fed that the BATF is not welcome. States that have told the Fed that the lack of enforcement of immigration policy will not be tolerated.

Btw where in the Constitution is the Federal Government given exclusive power over immigration. (I bet someone here can point it out. I seem to have missed it.)

        • professor

          Vicki:

So it seems that we do have common ground…

You said, “The Federal Government has taken upon itself a LOT of powers that belong to the States.”

And I said that the States need to take back the powers the Federal Government has usurped. The States could be valuable in setting this country back on the right road to recovery. And, you are right that the States are beginning to challenge the Feds. More “power” to them!

Citizens, alone, cannot do what the Governors of the States can, when they combine their efforts to thwart the plans of this regime.
Together, the Governors can render Washington powerless by taking away the power of the Feds to “tax and spend.” The corruption in Washington is at an unprecedented level. Total power corrupts totally, and that is why the money needs to stay out of the hands of the Feds..the Marxist criminals we have running our government

    • Flashy

PP….I would say you are wrong. 100% of the People receive government largesse. The largest recipients of this welfare are the 1%, the wealthiest, and Big Corporate America.

now if you can explain why the top 1% should receive a special tax bracket unavailable to 99% of the population, if you can explain why Corporate America should be subsidized when they are reporting record profits yet not hiring and creating jobs, when you can explain why the GOP is so insistent on raising the taxes on the 99% (the true job creators) yet leaving untouched (actually increasing) the tax breaks given to the wealthy…I’d love to hear it.

    • http://www.moshcustom.com moshcustom

I know a lot, LOT of people collecting unemployment. When most of them first lost their jobs they were hitting the streets everyday looking for work, but as soon as the checks started coming in, looking for a job got set aside til tomorrow, which obviously never comes. I’ve never been without a job for more than a week in my life, and I’m 43 years old. But I know if I was laid off and getting paid to sit home on my duff……well, I shudder to think how lazy I would become. One friend of mine got his benefits extended to where he got paid NOT to work for a total of a year and a half! After about the first month of unemployment handouts, he basically quit looking and settled into a routine of living on what the government sent him. And when the money finally did stop (after almost a year and a half) he had lost all motivation and desire to get a job. He went from a hard working skilled tradesman to a total slacker who was actually angry when he got “cut-off”! Not to mention the countless stories I’ve read and personally know about where people who don’t need it are getting aid and even many that are abusing the system and falsely filing claims. Some have even gotten rich from stealing from the tax-payers! I think supporting people who have the physical and mental ability to support themselves is wrong and detrimental to society. I hope you open your eyes and see what kind of damage an over-reaching government can accomplish!

      • Vagabond

mosh I am 76 years old and can honestly say I have all ways been able to get a job when I wanted one. it wasn’t all ways what I would like to have had but it was a job. I worked untill I was 73 and decided to loaf. wish I was still working,

        • Karolyn

We live in a different world today. I worked for myself from 98-04; and when I closed my store and started looking for work, it was like a whole new world! Gone are the days when experience counts; now everybody has to have special training or a degree – even if you’ve had plenty of experience doing that particular job. Then, of course, there’s nepotism and age discrimination. At that time it took me 4 months to find a job and the one I got was through knowing somebody who died in a motorcycle accident. I got her job.

          • http://deleted Claire

Computers have taken away jobs too. When my office became computerized, we laid off a bunch of people. Same with the post office issue. We have the Internet now and send emails. Consequently less letters are mailed. Technology has taken away jobs. The post office has done away with their overnight letters–it cost $18.30 to send a letter overnight. I know because I used to send in dog show entries which had a deadline. UPS and FedEx charge out the kazoo for overnight letter delivery. About $40.00– So if people think UPS and FedEx is any cheaper, they better think twice.

      • DaveH

That’s been my experience also, moshcustom. Out of about a dozen unemployment recipients, I’ve only known one who actually made an effort to find a job instead of milking the payments to the end.

      • Aurelio

I totally agree with you. But getting laid off and finding another job depends very much in how old you are. It’s illegal to discriminate on the basis of age, but it’s there. I know a well seasoned highly skilled friend who’s gone to innumerable interviews, good interviewer, but still on the hunt because he is 64, and he looks like 64. So, like with every rule there are exceptions.

        • professor

There is age discrimination even though there are “laws” against it happening., (The only laws enforced in this country are those protecting the civil rights of foreign terrorists, illegals, or prisoners.)

With the government involving itself in healthcare, companies don’t want to hire anyone likely to require costly medical
care. Companies are looking at the “bottom line.”

    • TML

We will miss you… I don’t especially like the ‘groaning’ either since it seems geared toward preaching to the choir, rather than helping people who have opposing views understand why we think these things from a more genuine, less childish way, as to make similarities between Obama and Santa Clause.

I will say that my views that government “not helping people” as a good thing, come from the idea that the only legitimate role of government is to protect freedom and liberty. Not to take care of us. Or, as Thomas Jefferson put it… “The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others.”

I believe that, if the government wasn’t TAKING (forcibly with no choice of my own) money for Medicaid, Social Security, and Federal Taxes out of my paycheck every week, I could use that to provide for my own retirement and even have savings that could get me through ‘rough patches’ if I found myself unemployed or unable to create income. Instead, they take from my family my hard earned money to give it to others who the government deems are in need.

Imagine having the sum of money that is forcibly taken from each paycheck for Medicaid, SS, and Federal Income Tax, and putting it away into your own savings… every week. For many people that would be over $4000 a year to help get you through those rough patches.

Even in a situation in which unemployment benefits are not there and you have zero money… there are charities to help in hard times, but I think the most beneficial aspect of not having unemployment benefits through government would be that it forces people to get off their butt and do whatever it takes to actually work and make money, and find a job. I guess it comes down to what kind of person you are… are you one that would be standing on the road side with a can asking for change? Or are you one that would go door to door to every business in town asking for any kind of work, whether it’s being hired for a job or just to provide a one time service?

Anyway… I’ll stop rambling. Hate to see ya go.

      • Thinking about

Go and ask the employees of Enron how they applied money for their retirement and then find the executives has run this in the ground. Also go to their 401k and see how much was in it then come back and brag how you provided for your retirement.

    • vicki

Bye. And can I have your stuff? :)

  • Flashy

Mr. Livington…I disagree with much of your article today, but would like to make at least one suggestion which you should bear in mind. You write… “But if Barack Obama has his way, we will be stuck with him for another 1,800 days.”

what I know you wanted to write, yet to maintain your public pose is “… if true patriotic concerned Americans have their way, we will be blessed with him for another 1,800 days.”

And you’re correct..your poetry needs improving

    • http://www.boblivingstonletter.com/ Bob Livingston

      Dear Flashy,

    • Flashy

JB….ya think if Obama offered to run on exactly the same funding as the GOP candidate…with the Super PACs satying on the sidelines…that the GOP and the Conservative movement would accept?

Straight up, all things even, Obama would win in a landslide. Not even close. Strip the GOP and the Conservative movement of today of inflammatory rheotric, filling the airwaves with half truths and outright lies, dropping insinuations which have no basis in reality, and twisting historical facts…it wouldn’t be close. Obama wins..and Congress swept clean of the Party of No.

Sorry to burst your fantasy bubble, but fact is fact.

I hope voters get the opportunity to prove they are willing and ready to “take out the trash in Washington.”

Contrary to what most people think, welfare cannot be collected forever. Some states allow it to go on longer than others; but it is not a lifetime benefit. Here in SC, if I recall correctly, a woman can only collect for 36 months within a five year period; and she cannot keep getting raises for each new baby beyond a certain number.

    • Warrior

Boy oh boy, that doesn’t sound “FAIR”!

    • Vagabond

well karolyn I lived in S.S. as a kid and a young man.and I knew a few young women who were living on wellfare and every time they had a baby they would BRAG about their new pay raise. that is what helped turn me against the democratic party,

      • Vagabond

        that should have read S.C.

      • Karolyn

I’m sure that was a long time ago. Much has changed.

        • professor

In Texas generation after generation stays on Medicaid. Some of these women make $10,000 a month and they get additional benefits for every illegitimate kid. They live in new houses and drive new cars.
They start their daughters out at ten or twelve years of age, starting a new generation of welfare recipients.

What else could these women do to make $10,000-plus a month, guaranteed, no layoffs, no taxes, and being on permanent vacations. Families making much less income are supporting these thieves!

If you work in an Emergency Department, soon you begin to recognize the same kids coming in with different “mothers.” To get more money these women “share” the same kids. Multiple women will have claimed the same kids for additional benefits.

This is a crime against these babies and against our Nation. It is unsustainable. Under this regime, the number of Medicaid recipients have doubled. And, it doesn’t matter if these thieves are American citizens or not.

    • DaveH

Wow, they only get to live on other unwilling peoples’ shoulders for 3 years! I think I’ve been convinced to be a Liberal. NOT.

    • Joe H.

      karolyn,
you need to check up on other states. S.C is NOT the US!!! I know people that have collected welfare their entire life and their kids are collecting now as well!! Where the heck do you think they came up with the term second generation welfare kings n queens??? i remember a family just up the street from us when I was a kid that got a colored TV from welfare because their children were “UNDERPRIVELEGED” because their friends had a color tv and they had to watch on a black and white set!! My dad lived across the street from one young girl that had three kids and her husband had died at work. she collected ADC for all three kids, death benefits on her husband from the shop, and lived with a guy that worked for about 300.00 a week!! When one of the neighbors reported the boyfriend, they said they couldn’t prove he lived there!! In reality they didn’t want to take a chance of enforcing the rules and maybe face layoffs!!

  • Iris

Vince, the Salvation Army does more to HELP people help themselves than the Obama masters ever could do. The difference has to do with self-power. Salvation Army encourages it, Obama goons want all you’ve got for their own use.

Yep, Iris, and it is called “VOTES”! There is more corruption, fraud, crime, black-mail, graft, deviousness, and theft as a result of the “voting booth” than in ANY other area! Everyone agrees Congress is in drastic need for change. OK…who’s voting against their incumbent Senators and member of Congress? Or is it “everyone else’s” representatives that are causing the problems?

        • Joe H.

          Flashy,
I watch my reps closly, and if they don’t follow the constitution at least 75% of the time, I will vote them down. I would actually go door to door campaigning against them, I have done so in the past. If I see someone coming up that would do a better job than him/her, then I would help THEM!! First, they have to convince me that they would do better!!

I know..they’re in a tizzy trying to decide if Newt has enough or if Romney should be the choice. Someday hopefully soon, we’ll ask Corporate America and the wealthy to pull their own weight instead of relying on us for their monies.

For too long we have allowed Corporate America and the weathy privatize profit and socialize the risk. They feed of our monies and our labor. Fine….they can have it one way or the other. Privatize risk and profit…or socialize them both.

Give them that choice and listen to them scream about how unfair it is to have them pull their own weight…

  • rosina

I was going to reply to Vince but he probably will not be reading it.
The government should help THOSE WHO ARE TRULY IN NEED! but not so excessively that the one who is working becomes a hired slave for the government and ends up worse off than the one being helped. There IS such a thing as responsibility and helping one’s self.
In all the years I have lived in the US the longest time that Unemployment benefits were allowed has been 6months-now it seems to go on and on. Did not these people think of saving something for a rainy day? I learned this from my father and give and have given to charitable causes but IT IS MY CHOICE! I object to much of the governments ideas of benefits or help. iF I WORKED AND SAVED, WHY SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT STEAL FROM ME TO GIVE IT ALL AWAY?
vINCE is right in that the government should help those who work and pay taxes and are promised in return a sort of pension (SS)but then they must keep these promises BUT NEVER DO? lOOK AT SOCIAL SECURITY? There was plenty of money there, but it has been stolen for other nefarious purposes. Then, those who paid get shafted.
WHEN THE GOVERNMENT PUTS ITS MONEY WHERE ITS MOUTH IS, THEN MAYBE, I SHALL BELIEVE THEM-IN OTHER WORDS, TAKE A 50%CUT ON YOUR SALARIES AND A FREEZE UNTIL THE DEBT IS PAID. EVERY LAW MUST ALSO APPLY TO THEM-so no more stealing as the Pelousy witch has done, by insider trading etc.
Till then, they can all rot in hell for all I care.

    • Karolyn

Even if people did save for a “rainy day”, most would not be saving for being out of work for a year or more. That is what has happened. I remember reading somewhere that one should have enough saved for 3 months in case of job loss. These days, those figures don’t hold true.

      • DaveH

        Karolyn,
If Government butted out of the Marketplace, only those who didn’t want to work would be out of work for long. There is always something we can do to earn money from our fellow citizens. But then Government steps in with licensing laws, regulations, and other meddling to prevent people from voluntarily trading their goods and services with other willing people.
Big Government is the Problem, Not the Solution.

      • ChristyK

There have been scientific studies on unemployment. It doesn’t matter whether unemployment is 3 months or 24 months, almost all people get a job in the last month of unemployment or within a month after unemployment runs out. This is true across countries. Unemployment encourages people not to work especially if the work they can get is less prestigious or pays less. If they didn’t have unemployment, most people would find a job of some kind even if it wasn’t their dream job. Our whole country would be better off with people working instead of taking.

If I was designing unemployment (I’d prefer optional rather than mandatory UI) I would pay 80% of a persons normal income for 3 months. After that, the pay would decrease by 10% of normal income every month until it was gone. We could set up a halfway house kind of thing with group lodging on cots with simple food provided for someone who truly couldn’t care for themselves when their unemployment ran out. I would want this to be exceedingly meager accomadations because we want to meet basic life needs but make it unpleasant. As Benjamin Franklin said, the best thing we can do for the poor is to make them uncomfortable in their poverty.

        • eddie47d

Excellent comment Christy. Be generous in helping others and know when to draw the line.

        • http://naver samurai

Sounds promising. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      • Don

Karolyn, have you ever wondered why we don’t have jobs in this country, could it be because of big government with all their regulations and taxes that made companies leave, if it wasn’t for that we wouldn’t be having this conversation, and obama ( little o ) is doing everything in his power to keep unemployment as high as he can, do you get the picture now ??????

        • Thinking about

Must be all the tax increases placed on the “job creators”. You want our country to begin to look like China’s pollution? Not very many industries would regulate themselves without rules. Don’t like rules, then how would you like for someone to drive down your street 100 mph and hit you or someone in your family? Rules are made for safety reasons. Your argument is old, tired and worn out. It has not worked, proof is in the jobs which has not been created.

      • patrick H.T. paine

” To conquer, first DIVIDE! ”

The concept of “savings” is so outdated that the number of people actually living who could remember when it was a viable strategy are
few if any. The system that is in place NOW and which none of your available political “choices” understands, is entirely “debt and consumption” driven……so the mantra which you are hearing is that the solution IS: to somehow by some miracle RESTORE us to a condition
of GROWTH. This is NOT possible, and since the mechanism’s of further
debt and consumption have failed, an economic system which relies on them must inevitably follow suit.

While it is nice to cite simplistic phrases like “self reliance” which was never a simple choice, the conditions that made this possible no longer exist, there is nowhere to run and those who have managed to carve a survivalist niche are few…….and lest we forget the government has plans in place to collect revenues after a nuclear war…….so without a war, their instincts will be more of the same.

The primary problem is “disinformation overload”, whose sources like
“LIVINGTON SHOP” present mindless soundbite rhetoric for the purpose of advancing their “perceived self interest” and whichever simplistic
mantra serves them……which is them taken up by those also agree with some of these “soundbite truisms” and “disinformation” increases to the point of absurdity…..on this site the bias has a “libertarian/conservative slant” and at this level, opposing “opinion entitlement” is met by the tried and true practice of “labeling”……of course, this begins in the main topic above, using words like “socialist, communist, liberal ” and degenerates further among the masses…..although from time to time, this mindless frustration and continuation of useless energy finds expression among the “regulars”, it fades rather quickly…..because
actual solutions require actual application of intellect….which is not the point of Livingston SHOP….so 6 topics a day, five days a week, with all manner of LIBERTY ALERTS….serve Bob’s interests, as well as sharing them with a “willing coterie”….so he can be somewhat “freer” in this unfree world…..you on the other hand…..?

But the hard questions….the dangerous questions, are not asked here
even though returning to Constitutional government is both the claimed
goal and SOLUTION to all YOUR problems….

Where are the common “law and equity courts”? If you want the constitution back, you need to restore these courts…..because in them the constitution does NOT require interpretation, the function of the judicial system is applying it.

Income is profit or gain. Juries judge both fact and law. Crimes require victims or actual harm. Corporations are not people, and have both limited purpose as well as a limited life, and YOU have RIGHTS, as defined by the BILL of the same name.

One of these rights…..the most important one, is the right to the redress of grievances…….which has been reduced to the same level of absurdity now as in 1776….and you are appealing to your oppressor for a solution…which happened again in 1860….until a clear solution was found to this pesky problem of the Constitution,
        starting in 1935 thru 1952.

The elements of the original design were constructed with the idea of
“attempting” to maintain a balance……but it required “eternal vigilance” on the part of “citizens” to keep the “seperation” in place
since the natural tendency, historically, was for society to “self organise” into hierarchical structures politically and economically.
This task, as noted, has been underway from the beginning, so much so,
that the Constitution, itself, was actually a “step” in this process.

Please understand that this self organisation is a natural tendency, so it does not require conspiracies…..simply gradual steps to increase advantage and time.

Clearly, the concept of the common good can no longer even be pretended too and any results which seem to suggest otherwise are
accidental…..but restoration is not impossible…..unless the
the means to do it are ignored. ” where by we will all hang seperately.”

“Do not ask for whom the bell tolls………”

      • Joe H.

        karolyn,
Actually, they advise you to try to have at least a years worth of wages saved to cover an emergency. See, neither my wife or I are heavy drinkers, I don’t smoke, we don’t spend foolishly, and we only put on our cards what we can (and do!) pay off each and every month.

Everything President Obama has tried to do has been obstructed by Republicans. President Clinton left us with a surplus while President Bush left us with a deficit and two invasions of sovereign nations. President Obama came into office with a country already in big trouble financially. As far as helping people who have lost jobs, would we not all want help if we were in their shoes? Especially those with young children to feed?

    • Brian

The claim that Clinton left a surplus is a lie. He left a projected surplus and he had to raid Social Security to get that.

      • Mushin

Brian – can you tell me where we can find this evidence? My brother has been needling me about this for years….now it’s payback time!

You are so right about that, Brian.

    • Brian

BTW Bush’s two invasions were approved by Congress, including Democrats (I was for it before I was against it…John Kerry). Obama has invaded more nations and thumbed his nose at the idea of Congressional approval and obeying the War Powers Act.

      • Flashy

Ummm…pray tell, what countruies has President Obama invaded? ooops.

As far as the ongressional approval for Bush’s Wars, Afghanistan was a must. But if you will recall, it was not to oust the Taliban, it was to get bin Laden. Then Bush let it languish, allowed the taliban and al Qaeada to get back together and regroup, and it became the mess we have today.

In Iraq, Bush and Cheney lied, falsified evidence and documents, and sent our troops into a war we should never have gone into. they did more harm to our international relations, to our ME relations, and in fighting Iran’s progress towards nukes than anyone or any event in history.

        • http://naver samurai

How about Lybia (Which he didn’t get Congress or the Senate to approve of it before going.), Yemen, troops to Uganda (Maybe to protect the muslims and help his brother in Kenya.), and now possibly to Iran. He also lied about bringing all troops back from Iraq and Afghanistan within his first 6 months in office and actually uncreased the number of troops in Afghanistan. He’s also kept 50,000 soldiers in Iraq to guard a pipeline of oil that we don’t get one drop of. Is this good enough for you? He also wants to set up bases in Australia to put pressure on China in the South China Sea. Their leaders are already “preparing for war.” I guess Obama bin Laden isn’t done empire building yet. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

        • http://deleted Claire

eddie47d–don’t you realize that Obama is not going to get credit for anything??!! It began the first day he took office. Remember all the people that immediately claimed that they wanted him to fail? He was hated from day one. I have never seen nor heard so much hate concerning a president. Communist? Marxist? Socialist? Ye gods, these words could apply to both parties. Nothing is ever one-sided. Neither party walks on water. It never ceases to amaze me that people think one party is better than the other. They are all cut from the same cloth. Anything the Dems are for, the Repubs are against. And vice versa. At this moment in time, the Repubs are against everything the Dems propose. If the Repubs gain power, I wonder how long it will take them to “vote for” everything they were against during Obama’s presidency. It is a vicous circle. They are all spinning their wheels while America suffers. It is way past time for the childish/ignorant behavior to stop. Personally, all of them should be thrown out of office. I will not sing any praises for the entire lot of them. They have all failed.

          • professor

            Claire:

I have serious doubts that obama was voted in by American voters. And, we certainly know that the American voters would never re-elect him to office in a legitimate election.

He was “chosen…..anointed and appointed” by the shadow government that runs our country. How else can you explain his rise to the Presidency without qualifications, with a mysterious past, multiple identities, multiple social security numbers, no citizenship, and having been a “foreign student” at Occidental. Why was he not “vetted” by Republicans, instead they swept him into office. Why did McCain run a nefarious campaign. Nothing adds up, and there is no reasonable explanation for how a third-world-dictator ended up claiming “squatter’s rights” to our White House.

          • Joe H.

You mean like the one you wear over your face and head? FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      • Mushin

Let me clarify something for you Alice; we here are conservative.

        con·ser·va·tism (kn-sûrv-tzm)
        n.
        1. The inclination, especially in politics, to maintain the existing or traditional order.
        2. A political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism, and opposition to sudden change in the established order.

All here stand for Liberty, limited government, personal and fiscal responsibility and transparency.

        If you don’t like what we have to say I suggest you do two things;

        1. Move to a country which is “progressive” and suits your needs (I suggest Russia, Cuba or China.)

2 Find yourself a group of people who agree with you and “get it on like donkey kong baby!” – after all, this is American but we don’t want you here! Bye,bye.

        • patrick H.T. paine

          ” To conquer, first DIVIDE!”

Way to go, Mushin…..now all you have to DO is define all those things you BELIEVE are TRADITIONAL, regarding all those categories you listed……..and unfortunately NONE of what you might attempt to claim…..has actually existed in your lifetime…..not to worry, in the mindless babble world you inhabit……catholic’s like the NEWT
can ask god’s forgiveness for his three marriages….the problem is
in the catholic faith, he has NOT nor will he ever be FORGIVEN,
because DIVORCE is not allowed. ( and the traditional marriage vows of the state pretty much rule out any grounds for divorce also. )

Abuse of power requires willfill ignorance to sustain it, so that the only guarantee that we can rely on is that if the willfully ignorant, actually get POWER, they will also abuse it.

That’s a TRADITION you can take to the BANK, although if you don’t
own the BANK…….you see idiocy is a never ending cycle…..

“Do not ask for whom the bell tolls………”

          • libertytrain

Actually you are kind of incorrect in your statement about his divorces and why they would not be considered technically that is… You need to do some research on why you are incorrect. I’m not helping you I’m too busy tolling the bell.

          • http://deleted Claire

            libertytrain–Good one.

          • libertytrain

There is a specific reason why Newt’s previous marriages wouldn’t be considered as marriages…still can’t figure it out… Am still tolling that bell…. Here’s one small hint, he wasn’t a Catholic nor were his marriages performed in a Catholic Church. Check on Nicole Kidman’s marriage in a Catholic Church despite being previously married to Tom Cruise – oh, I’ve helped your search far too much and that bell is sometimes hard to toll.

To Eddie, Alex and other antagonists:

You forget that you follow an old, radical, left-over and “failed legacy!”

Your people have no “place” of your own. Your kind tries to destroy those with which you disagree, but you have always failed, and always will. Those that follow “the light” will never serve in darkness!
But, in your arrogance you believe yourself to be the future, the elite, the progressive..you are wrong.

Don’t underestimate those that can say they, “Love God and Country.”
Don’t mistake that for weakness! These are the independent, strong-willed people that built this Nation. They made it into the greatest in the world, and they are the ones that have given you your freedom to use profanity against their beliefs.

They are and their descendants have been undefeated. You, my friends, are not….

      • DaveH

Alex, as is usually the case with Liberals, must start off with personal attacks.
Why don’t you do some studying, Alex, so that you have the confidence to debate with facts instead of personal attacks?

        • eddie47d

So Dave goes after Alex with a personal attack instead of debating him with relivant facts. LOL

      • Aurelio

Sorry, but it was Louis Pasteur who recommended doctors to wash their hands, not the liberals. Liberalism was a philosophical and political movement of ideas that started in France at the beginning of the 18th century with the “philosophes de cafe”, or the Cafe’s philosophers. Those people created a literature that delineated the European thought for more than 100 years, and were the force behind the French Revolution and the American War of Independence. Our Founding Fathers were liberals in that sense: end of the absolute power of the kings, respect for human rights and democratic form of government. It took the United States the glory of having created the best Republic that the world has ever seen. But Liberalism now is a very different thing, it equates with Big Government and with socialistic
tendencies; something that the Founding Fathers could not have imagined.

      • Joe H.

        Vagabond,
you are not completely right either. Clinton only showed a surplus because he spent the same money in two places at the same time. Can you go into a store buy a pop and chips, pay for the pop, take the money back and pay for the chips?? It does NOT work that way! Clinton took money already earmarked for Social Security and applied it to the debt! THERE WAS NO SURPLUS! ACTUALLY, there was a slight deficit!!

Sandy asks “As far as helping people who have lost jobs, would we not all want help if we were in their shoes?”
Sure we would, Sandy, but most of us would expect that help Voluntarily, not by force. Government is Force. They are contributing money that is not theirs to contribute. To contribute one’s own time and money is charitable, but to contribute somebody else’s unwilling time and money, Sandy, is Slavery and Theft:

    • vicki

      Sandy writes:
“Everything President Obama has tried to do has been obstructed by Republicans. ”

The problem with statements like this is that they are irrelevant. Obama and the Democrats had 2+ years of a super-majority in the House and a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. There is nothing that the Republicans could have done to stop them. Yet the democrats did nothing useful to fix any of the supposed abuses of the past.

In total, as far as I know I am English, irish, german, and Native American. Put them all together and I am a typical AMERICAN!!

      • ChristyK

The Indians who live on government property and receive government handouts are poor (still not poor like many countries around the world). The Indians that own their own land and take care of theirselves are doing well.

People who rely on government learn to be dependent and forget how to take care of themselves or think for themselves. People who work for their living take pride in what they do and live much better, not just because they were “lucky” to get a job, but because they worked to get that job and worked to keep that job and know that they can take care of themselves.

Handouts hurt people in the long term. Long term unemployment doesn’t take care of people; it makes people unemployable. They become modern day slaves totally dependent on the government for their basic needs and unable to vote against the politicians that give them the handouts on which they are dependent.

        • vicki

Well said. Feed a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

  • Baba

While Obama spends, The United States Burns. Sound familiar? You bet we want Americans back to work and producing for Family and Country! That will not happen as long as The Federal Reserve has control of our money. The Federal Reserve fasilitates Big Government and Spending way beyond their means. Big Unions fascilitate non-growth and controls The Working People. When Big Governement steps in, the economy gets all screwed up. “Free Markets” does work!Obama cannot keep throwing back all the ills of this country to Past Presidents. Obama is part of the problem Right Now. Americans have gone through the Demoralization of The People – led to believe that Big Government will take care of The People. HA! I recall that kind of talk during the Hitler days in Germany. Promises of Change and One World Government. Thank God crazy, idiot Hitler was stopped and we still speak English in the United States! “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely!” Socialism means the abolition of private enterprise and the creation of a system of ‘planned economy’ in which the entrepreneur working for profits is replaced by a central planning body. That ‘system’ has been tried and failed. It just doesn’t work and have a Free Nation. To lose control of our very own destiny and allow Big Governement control The People will end in disaster. Remove Obama from our Oval Office and his Canadian built school bus and Get Rid of The Federal Reserve!!! The debt can be reduced in one year instead of ten years if Obama stops spending!!!

I just love a free giveaway. I hope I get everything I want this Christmas from Santabama. I know I’ll love what I get, until the bill comes in. Seems the one thing Santabama forgot is that someday, someone must pay, and we know he won’t. So lets forget what we want, and start to ask what we can do. We can start now and use our heads to actually vote this coming election, instead of just showing up and like Obama voting present, we can show up and actually vote, think who you will vote for not which party.

  • wtram46

There is NO way I could ever vote for Barack Hussien Obama–I didn’t last time and I won’t this time. He is a Muslim Communist, therefore and enemy against everything I have ever fought for or even wanted. I was raised to work for what I want–but Odumbo is creating a world where that means nothing. They EXPECT the government to take care of them. Well what happens when all the working people die out and all that is left are these leeches?? How are they going to survive??/ Answer that one if you can Barack Hussien Obams, “Odumbo!!”

Being a fool is an unconscious process directed by an unrestrained ego. It was Socrates who said-2500 years ago- ” I only know that I know nothing”, it could sound stupid for a fool, but that phrase sits at the top of a high state of awareness on a man that measures himself in front of the awesomeness of the Universe that surrounds him. The wise man curtails his arrogance and excessive pride; only the fool believe he’s bigger than life. The man sitting in the Oval Office today has fallen prey to this state of mind. Cardona, a democratic house representative from the Socialist Republic of California, excoriated the community organizer today for being “arrogant, elitist and completely out of touch with reality”. All that coming from a house member liberal democrat means a lot! It could be the tip of the iceberg. How many more dems share on this perception?
Obama indeed believes that he is larger than life, a real “once in a life time leader” as Bill Richardson called him, some sort of messiah sent down here to lead us to the promised land. The man suffers from an unbelievable ego inflation. Just look at his pictures with his chin up, reminding me of another egomaniac Benito Mussolini.

  • http://deleted Claire

“A fool and his money is soon parted.” Look at all the campaign money that is being spent. Millions of dollars. The one getting the most money wins?? It would be nice if a candidate “won” on their “own merits” instead of the amount of money they take in. All the money in the world will not make the candidate a “better person”– a “bought and paid for” government/administration is not always the solution.

    • Aurelio
