Detention Bill Passes Both Chambers

Detention Bill Passes Both Chambers

Congress cleared a $662 billion defense bill Thursday and will send the measure to President Barack Obama for his signature.

The National Defense Authorization Act and its controversial provisions regarding detention of American terror suspects was passed in the House of Representatives Wednesday night by a vote of 283-136.

The bill split Democrats down the middle, as 93 voted in favor and 93 against legislation that President Barack Obama endorsed earlier that day by retreating from a veto threat after a “change in the language” of the detention provision, according to POLITICO. The bill was met with opposition from 43 members of the GOP.

“We have ensured that as we fight terrorists around the world, we also protect the civil liberties of Americans at home,” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) said in a statement issued following the vote.

The Senate voted 86-13 for the bill on Thursday. The bill would authorize money for military personnel and operations as well as indefinite detention of American terror suspects.

The White House initially threatened a veto but dropped that warning, saying last-minute Congressional changes no longer challenge the President’s ability to prosecute the war on terror, according to The Associated Press.

Human Rights Watch has described the President’s failure to veto the bill as a destruction of the rule of law both in the United States and abroad.

“By signing this defense spending bill, President Obama will go down in history as the president who enshrined indefinite detention without trial in US law,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “In the past, Obama has lauded the importance of being on the right side of history, but today he is definitely on the wrong side.”

We deserve whatever is going to happen. “If a nation expects to be free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be…if we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the duty of every citizen to be informed.” Thomas Jefferson. millions have failed in that responsibility. The middle class is disappearing while corporate America is making billions.

  • 1911man

I am thouroly dumbfounded that on the 220th aniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights this congress ahs seen to it’s destruction. I find this unforgivable.

God Bless America .. If HE deserts us it’s over.. Please lets not desert HIM ..

Just like to pass along my thanks to Congress for selling me an my fellow Americans out. Please don’t express shock when some of your friends and neighbors start disappearing, you can’t use the internet or cell phones and FEMA camps start filling up. Sleep lightly folks because that knock on the door in the middle of the night is coming sooner than you know.

  • Ol504Troop

Bob Marshall is right – we deserve what happened. I, myself, emailed ALL of my elected representatitives to vent my disatisfaction with the way this bill was worded. What did YOU do? Did any of YOU bother to write anything more than some blog? Because if you DIDN’T inform your representatives of your frustration, then YOU are much of the reason this bill passed. Folks, they count on apathy to railroad us. If most American Citizens only get involved on a blog or two instead of contacting their elected officials, they can do what ever they want- they figure there isn’t much opposition.

    • Joe H.

I emailed all my reps and my congressman, LaTourette abstained!! The others went FOR!

  • http://personallibertydigest harry whittamore

i do not agree what was passed yesterday but seems like we are voters who vote them in the only way to stop something we dont think is fair to our country number one is who we vote for we vote them in time to vote them out. we need to pay attention who we vote for. after all our president only listens to our demands an safety. so if we dont like what we got. get busy stop wineing vote it out. or cry later.

  • Ruth Dunbar

It looks like I retrieved old data in my past post. I apologize for not checking the dates. I was only going by the title of National Defense Authorization Act. However, it will be interesting to see how everyone voted on this current bill. There are a total of 289 republicans in congress and a total of 243 democrats in congress. These numbers I obtained from We can all check on how our representatives voted soon enough.

  • Libertarian58

Please study the Hegelian Dialectic to see why both parties are flip sides of the same coin, that they are all working toward the same goal of global communism, that all of US are their “enemy” and none of this should surprise you. Google ‘What is the Hegelian Dialectic?’

  • Ronald R. Johnson

Well I sure wonder if the same idiots who voted Obama and and all his buddies in the house and senate will vote the same idiots back in again?
I bet most will be voted back in because Voters as Whole have grown completely stupid! But surely no one who voted for Obama could ever be dump enough to vote for him again, except Oprah,NAACP, Nation of Islam,Beta and maybe some of the Hollywood Druggies if they can get off the dope in time!

    • eddie47d

I didn’t know all those Republicans who voted for this bill belonged to those black groups Mr Johnson. LOL

      • Joe H.

        • eddie47d

          Cry me a river Joe!

  • James

That’s 662,000 piles of a million dollars. That’s not ‘defense’ spending, that’s offense. At least, it’s offensive to me. None of the countries we have attacked were any threat to the United States.

  • DH

I hear the footsteps of Hitler at the door.

  • jopa

Wow $662 billion to fight the terrorists.I don’t know if that will be enough.I hear they now have six camels and four Toyota pickup trucks.

  • Think about it

So, they say it for American Terror Suspects, hmmmm, did you know that they (our government) has branded the OWS people as Domestic Terrorists, Key word Terrorists, whos next the tea party, you and i.

  • DavidL

This bill passed the conservative Republican Tea Party controlled House of Representatives. This should forever end the patriotic self-serving superiority rhetoric of the conservatives, republicans, and Tea Party backers writing on this sight. Wow, you really and truly are full of s—! What are you going to do about this?

I’m going to write and send a check to the only organization fighting against this latest attack on our American liberty and values. The name of that group, a union really, is The American Civil Liberties Union. Join me, it’s your chance to be ironic.

    • Joe H.

Name ONE conservative other than Rand and Ron PAUL in EITHER house!!! Don’t lump conservatives in with the RINOS!! We have told you this before, LET IT SINK IN, THIS TIME!!!

  • DavidL

This is just a continuation of the loss of freedom that started with the s0-called Patriot Act.

  • CanCan

Well, since our ever-traitorous Congress passed this bill, can these same Congress members be the first ones whose butts are shipped off to Guantanamo? Ooops, I forgot: Just as our Constitution and Bill of Rights no longer apply, this bill-and any other law-will not apply to them, either.

  • william harris

when will wake up to the fact that we already have a totalitarian govt. and have had for a lon time?

  • jopa

Just about any negative act or action today is described as terroristic activity.I remember a few years back they had on the local news that four teenage boys were being charged with terroristic activities after setting off some firecrackers in a vacant lot.The term “terrorist” has gotten way out of hand and it’s time the people of this country quit being such chicken Sh–s and grow up.Just think how one individual that perpetrated the acts of 911 has changed the face of the earth and the trillions it has cost and the lives of our Armed Forces Personnel.A terrorist gonna get you? Nah it ain’t gonna happen.

    • John Woodbury

Jopa you are wrong. Remember the Islamic Major who kill the soldiers was work place violence.

For those of you who have a terrible problem with English, you never had any common sense or basic understanding of ‘who did what,’ this article is titled ‘DETENTION BILL PASSES BOTH CHAMBERS.’
You know who you are, so I’ll refrain from focusing on ‘certain’ people. “BOTH” means if you’re thinking in terms of one group of ‘leaders’ controlling the ‘other group,’ YOU DO NOT HAVE A CLUE!
And for those among you who want to believe that the government’s plans for giving every man, woman and child a beautiful collection of custom-made “jewelry,” RETARDS, THEY’RE CHAINS, NOT JEWELRY, you back-stabbing, WORTHLESS SOBs!
You NEVER knew what compassion meant. AND, you are so twisted and so utterly traitorous that you’d gladly sacrifice your own country just so you can feel that you “BELONG.” YOU ARE INSANE!
