Despite swine flu spreading, officials rule out border closure

April 30, 2009 by

Despite swine flu spreading, officials rule out border closure The U.S. government has said it was not planning to close the border with Mexico due to the swine flu outbreaks.

According to the Star Telegram, Representatives Michael Burgess, a Texas Republican, and Eric Massa, a New York Democrat, along with a national anti-illegal immigration group, have asked federal officials and Texas Governor Rick Perry to shut down the border.

"The border should be closed," said Burgess, quoted by the newspaper. "At least until we get a better handle on how big this is."

Meanwhile, the Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee called on Perry to send the National Guard to the border immediately.

However, officials in Washington believe this would be counterproductive.

"Closing our nation’s borders is not merited here," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano at a mid-afternoon briefing.

She added the move would have enormous adverse economic consequences and would have "no impact or very little" to help stop the spread of the virus which is already present in our country.

However, she admitted the government was consulting with scientists to see whether any "additional screening beyond what we are already doing in terms of active monitoring would make sense at the borders."

U.S. scientists are racing to develop a vaccine, but they caution it would take several months before enough doses are available for testing in humans .

I vote to Close the Borders of Mexico. Stop all drug traffic and wait until a proper
resolution and law can be passed to benefit all immigrants as well as America.

These statist idiots that run this country now are determined to ruin it first then tell us they can save it so that they can be reelected in 2010 and dosent matter to them how many americans suffer or die as long as they retain power.

I wonder why The Obama chose Napolitano to be in a position where she can keep the borders open? Let’s see, when she was in Arizona, she didn’t have any reason to close the border. And now that she’s in Washington [she's qualified H O W?], she’s leaving both borders open.
So what does it take to have a reason to close our borders? Are we supposed to think another Pearl Harbor is needed, to convince those criminals and traitors in DC that a problem exists?
Frankly, I think people have to be beyond stupid (and corrupt) not to understand what is going on in the US. The lunatics are running the asylum, and those who can change things sold out long ago.

it should be plainly obvious that the govt does not give a hoot about our citizens. they state that since the virus is airborne, closing the border will do nothing to abate its spread. that is like saying that since there is ONE mosquito in the room already, we can just leave the screen door open. completely illogical, but of course politically, obama does not want to be seen as prejudiced against our neighbors to the south. but its ok that cuba isolated itself… obama is only prejudiced against the people of the usa. tell me will he apologize to mexico for this viral outbreak there? surely it must be usa’s fault. will he bow and grovel again too? makes me ashamed of how he portrays this country in the eyes of the world. illegal usurper in our midst destroying from within.

American should chastise Janet Napolitano for her fragility in the ignominious trespass of swine flu tolerated by the Mexican government on the US government. Let face it who cares if more people cross the boarder with the swine flu.

I don’t think that the current administration has the intelligence or experience to
really know what is going on in our nation today. The closing of our boarder would
help to slow or maybe stop the further spreading of this disease. It seems that the
current administration is more concerned with the Mexicans and not the Americans.
I always thought it was Americans first!! Let’s see what happens if this thing does
become big (Lord I hope not). If it does, what will this inexperienced president
    do? Probably nothing.

This is just another example of caring for all other countries at the expense of our own, what makes this lady qualified any way? Americans must wake up and start letting the people in Washington know that enough is enough. This is crazy! Surely the people of America are smart enough to really see what is going on here. There are so many reasons to close our borders. This swine flu hopefully will go away but should not be taken lightly. Just close the borders! Washington needs to start doing there jobs and protecting the interest of this country and it’s people

I would say that tis swine flu might have started in La Gloria Mexico but the spread did not come from the one little boy rom that remote place near Mexico City as this family really did not travel any place in the planes or on the trains to contamminate any one I do believe that it was brought into Mexico from travelers going there from other places and could have very easily got to that family in the area of La gloria by his Mother or Father that took into the home from the Market Place or from where they both worked but surley that one little boy did not spread that flu into the USA. This was caried there by visiters either from the USA or mabe the far east or another Latin American Country. But one thing we should have done was close the boarder and not allow food stuffs coming from Mexico into the US border as that in and of i self could have caused us many deaths!! This Country is really interested in the money they can make and not the safty of the American people. I can remember when I was a child my Mother was in the Market looking for some kind of French cheese and the Market manager said the cheese was banned from comming into the Country because the milk that was used to make the this cheese was contamminated and the feds stopped all the shipments from France! Well good for the FDA that banned the cheese because they were looking out for Americans this is no longer the case now you can come here from any where and bring fruit flies lice bugs and all kinds of germs from all over the place as we accept the worse in this Country as we accept and house other Country’s Criminal’s as well it is come one come all who cares as long as you do not live near any one in the administration!! Oh no do not come to our area’s of town that is the forbidden place that you can not enter into!!! If Obama ad his cabinate love the so called people in getmo so much and feel soooooooooo sorry for them that they did not bomb the entire City Of New York then Obama should HAVE THEM AS HIS GUESTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE ALL THE TIME HE IS IN OFFICE. YES HE SHOULD HAVE ALL KINDS OF TEA PARTYS FOR THEM ON THE WHITE HOUSE LAWN AND INVITE THEIR BROTHERS IN TERROR GROUPES ALL OVER THE WORLD.
