Despite massive deficit, earmarks increase in 2009

September 14, 2009 by

Despite massive deficit, earmarks increase in 2009 Media reports suggest excessive government spending has not ended with the bailouts of financial companies and the stimulus bill, as estimates suggests earmarks have grown from last year.

The fiscal year ends on September 30, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is pushing for appropriations bills to be passed and signed into law on time, something which has not happened since the mid-1990s.

At the same time, it has transpired that in addition to the $787 billion stimulus package and the $410 billion omnibus spending bill passed earlier this year, total earmarks have increased from $18.3 billion in 2008 to $19.9 billion in 2009, according to TheHill.com.

Earmarks are spending measures inserted into appropriations bills at the request of individual lawmakers and typically benefit projects in their home states. They are, according to Ryan Alexander, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, "part and parcel of the pay-to-play system that permeates Washington."

Democrats in both Houses are among those who have pushed for most pork barrel spending this fiscal year, with Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia leading the pack at $349.6 million (95 earmarks) and Representative John Murtha of Pennsylvania who has won 46 of them at the cost to taxpayers of $120.5 million, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Meanwhile, a recent White House budget office estimate put the federal deficit at $9 trillion for the 2010-2019 time period.

OMG I laughed all the way through it, what a joke. Davy it is this type of garbage that defines you very well on these pages, it really illuminates your radical and irrational views, to bad you couldn’t have lived in the eighteenth century as you seem to be living in the past all the time.

      • DaveH

Keep talking Sleepee, the others on this board can see where you’re coming from. The more you talk, the more they can see your sycophantic ignorance.

  • s c

I refuse to believe that any responsible politician can have a functional conscience or any integrity if they have yielded to the siren song of earmarks. In George Washington’s time, they would have been tarred-and-feathered and imprisoned. Why does this not happen today?
The fact that these people still infest Washington (both sides of the aisle) is proof that they will continue their unconscionable behavior until they are forced to leave office. Their behavior is at best immoral. A political system that encourages this twisted behavior but gives citizens no recourse to correct that behavior is a system that is living on borrowed time.
People, either throw all of these smiling tyrants out of office, or get used to living in chains. Either these ‘public servants’ work for us, or we work for them. Unless they are accountable to all of us, they are accountable to one.

    • DaveH

      SC,
We’re going to continue down this road unless people quit “throwing away their votes” on politicians who don’t promise to cut the size of government dramatically.

      • s c

So, someone thinks you’re radical and irrational. Ain’t that a @%^&*? I’ll pitch in a few dollars to get that yahoo a dictionary (assuming he can read and understand). If I ever saw a perfect example of childish hypocrisy, this is it.
Wear it as a badge of honor, DaveH. Saul Alinsky and his ilk never hesitated to look at most people as kooks. Karl Marx spewed his venom on everyone who wouldn’t brainwash themselves into becoming a camp-follower. Mao and Stalin never hesitated to look at others as traitors if they didn’t play suck-up. Hitler used his brainwashing pc as an art form. Some people just don’t get it. Maybe that’s how and why they can look at comrade obama, Gore, Pelosi, Waxman and Reid as masters of political dialogue and debate.

    • eyeswideopen

Your siren song is blasting the leaves off the trees. See below for your Republicans without a conscious.

  • DaveH

A couple more Acorn employees have been caught in the act. The Obama supporters are being exposed left and left.

    • s c

Exactly, DaveH. This process will go much faster I F some Democrats who stil have a conscience (and who recognize presidential bs when they see it) would get off their ‘opinions’ and help expose the rest of this anti-American, anti-freedom circus.
If credibility and responsibility and morality mean ANYTHING to Democrats, THIS is the time to act on it, and PROVE that they really care about America. It’s time to pay the piper, and as some say, ‘move forward.’ PROVE THAT YOU CARE, PEOPLE!

Let’s see 9 trillion added to the already 12 trillion for a total of 20 trillion dollars of national debt by 2020. And I’m sure that will be far exceeded by 2020. That is about $60000.00 debt for every man, woman, and child in the country.

    • Smilee

Seeing the lack of knowledge you have shown so often here why should anyone believe that your projections are anything more than pure baloney??? You most assume that we are going to follow the Bush 10 methods for the next the 10 years, we are now in a period of change from that and it will not have a Bush outcome, of course with the just say no that the republicans espouse today will not make it easy but if the democrats succeed in turning it around the republican party will change and conservative view points will no longer be espoused by the party and they will be come again the party of Eisenhower if they wish to be participants in the national dialogue.

      • DaveH

lack of knowledge would be a step up from your nit wit.

      • DaveH

Keep talking. The more you talk, the more readers of this board can see that you are just a radical apparatchik of the Obama spin machine.

        • Norm

          Daveh
If you don’t see yourself as a radical, I would seek out some optical care. If you think your extremist right wing views and spins are normal, you are way out of line.

          • DaveH

Right Norm, I am a radical for wanting to get us back to the Constitutionally Limited Government that our Forefathers established.
Keep talking Norm, the more you talk (like Sleepee and Fool) the more people on this board can see you’re just a sycophantic partisan with no mind of your own.

          • DaveH

I’m radical for wanting you and your cohorts to get their greedy thieving hands out of my wallet?
I’m radical for wanting to make my own personal medical choices without the involvement of a bunch of impersonal bureaucrats?
I’m radical for expecting the government to not flood our economy with excess dollars, thereby opening the floodgates for inflation to ravage the savings of those hard workers who were just trying to prepare for a little better future?
I’m radical for expecting our government to spend within its means so as not to saddle the American children and grandchildren with an enormous economy-wrecking debt?
I’m radical for posting websites for viewers to see for themselves just how corrupt the Liberals are?
Maybe, I’m just radical because my opinions aren’t the same as your sycophantic partisan spoon-fed opinions?

          • JeffH

DaveH: Thank you for your contributions to these discussions. We all have our opinions, but some cannot and will not let go of the past and refuse to acknowledge the here and now! That seems to justify, in their minds, the current out of control administration. And it seems that Obama is hell bent on ramming HCR down the American peoples throat despite the overwhelming lack of support from the American people. This will reflect his commitment to martyrdom.
In the words of the famous Mr.T…”I pity the fool”!

If memory serves me, I heard one president elect say “NO” to earmarks.
just another lie? Democrats were the first to eat up “earmarks” and will continue to do so. Nothing like having a credit card without a limit.

          • eyeswideopen

Dave, in almost every one of your posts you blame the liberals for all the ills of this country. I was hoping that with your intellect you would be able to rationally see that this country did not get to this point by adhering to the Republican party platform. It took many years of greed to bring us to a situtation which took us to the bring of a depression. The logic that you use that the liberals are in your pocket, makes no sense as your pocket has been picked for the past 8 yrs at least, by a party who takes pride as being the “gate keepers” of financial responsibility. You want to go back in time, that is not possible, however we can make changes to reduce the size of government with positive people. You might even get some of those Libertarian principles incorporated like the right to abortion, the right to sue without a cap for real injuries to the victims, the government not giving aid to private companies, a flat tax, a smaller government, however we will never be able to leave our elderly to the kindness of others as this country has become hard, cruel and unjust in how we treat each other. You feel so imposed upon to contribute towards any social program, and you want us to believe that the sick , disabled and elderly would be just fine under your system? Not gonna happen. We at least can admit that we need laws to force the cynical to help take care of their relatives, when they don’t to. I personally am proud that this country has compassion and usually tries to do the right thing for those who can’t.

      • George F.

Oh, wer’e in a “STATE” of change alright. I suspect from the tone of your comment that you are a young person that has as is with ALL young people a sense of idealic compassion and will, that they see no further than the end of your young noses. Seventy three years old and have voted both ways for a long time. I vote who I think is the best person for the job. Been voting for fifty one years , Been in two wars. Seen the ups and downs of the results of both good and very bad politicians. In the case of Mr. Obama, the very worst yet. There are very FEW descent
politicians around today. An instance of the “BAD”. Mr. Ted Kennedy, He let his pregnant girl friend die in order to say his own skin. Mr. Bill Clinton, our ship was bombed and he did NOTHING. ALL and I mean ALL democrats will take your money and spend, spend, spend. The last and only GOOD democrat was Mr. Harry Truman. The last good republican was Mr. Ron Regan. Oh, things are changing and I’m afraid when all is said and done you and your fellow supporters of this man and his change will realize that we are all on the short end and have nowhere to run. This country was and is based on Christian and personal freedom beliefs. When it’s over there will be no liberty of Christian beliefs nor liberty of personal rights. That’s NOT the way a SOCIALIST government is run. It’s the way Hitler ran Germany and the way North Korea is run today. Remember that it took nearly twelve years to get rid of Hitler but N. Korea, Cuba, and others live on. Be carefull what you want and what you wish for. You just might wind up with your nose CUT OFF and NO replacements to fix it.

        • DaveH

          George,
As Thomas Jefferson said “Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”
and “Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.”

          • eyeswideopen

You slam me for quoting the past, what is this? I will quote you, stop living in the past and deal with the present.

          • DaveH

It’s called History, Eyes. Am I slamming Jefferson? Have you seen me practicing partisan politics?

          • JeffH

As is the case with the founders of this country ,and history proves, their foresight was uncanny and spot on. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are the most important documents in American History and that is more evident to me today than ever before. There is a huge differance between history and 8 years of Bush…which will become a part of American history someday, as will all of the previous and current presidents. Good, bad or indifferant.

          • JeffH

May I add, THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS IN AMERICA TODAY.

          • eyeswideopen

Dave you are nothing but partisan politics. You hate the Democrats and that is the end of the story.

      • jmac

hey smilee ‘the just say no republicans’ dont have the votes to block anything your democratic friends want to do. SO WHATS THE PROBLEM,why dont they go for it. THEY WON REMEMBER.

    • DaveH

They are from the office of management and budget, Sleepee.

      • DaveH

        For the current debt see
        National Debt clock:

      • s c

You get an A+ for trying, DaveH, but you must remeber that an ultralibs’s first protocol demands that they NEVER recognize or approve of FACTS. They must protect their precious ‘standards’ 24/7.

        • DaveH

          SC,
I’m not doing that for Sleepee, but for anyone else who might read the comments. I know that Sleepee is too far into his coma to learn anything.

        • eyeswideopen

          S.C.
Below you can see some facts. You won’t like them, but facts are facts. You need to acknowledge that your party is just as bad if not more so, than the horrible Democrat’s. When are you going to start living in the real world and quit thinking that our party is better than the other one? We need a third party, one that hasn’t been flooded with visions of grandeur. We are worse than the Dem’s as we practice to deceive by claiming that we are the “responsible fiscal party”. Which as you can see is nothing but hyprocrisy at it’s finest.

      • Smilee

Again you show you are incapable of getting the point of my post, just another demonstration of you inability to comprehend anything until you have filtered it through your pea sized brain and it comes out as garbage and then you respond based on that garbage.

    • eyeswideopen

Well, let’s list the earmarks for us Repbulicans:
      Of the top 10 Senators requesting the highest amount of money in solo earmarks 6 are Republicans;
      #2 Shelby qty 64 $114,484,250.00
      #3 Bond 54 95,691,491.00
      #5 Cochran 65 75,908,475.00
      #6 Murkowski 71 74,000,750.00
      #8 Inhofe 34 53,133,500.00
      #9 McConnell 36 51,133,500.00
Of the top 10 Senators requesting the highest number of solo earmarks 5 are Republicans.
      #1 Specter Qty 134 25,320,000.00
      #2 Murkowski 71 74,000,750.00
      #3 Chochran 65 75,908,475.00
      #4 Shelby 64 114,484,250.00
      #8 Bond 54 85,691,491.00

So, now the facts are pretty evident. The Republicans are more quilty than the Democrats as we have 6 of the top 10 requesting the larger amount of monies. I know you want to scrape Specter, so we will, and still the top four in qty are the Republicans.

What say yea? We better stop throwing those stones, or all of our glass houses will come crashing down. When you aren’t quilty you can accuse others of crimes, until then, maybe calling our Senators should be a top priority. You can find this info on site called Raging Republican.

      • DaveH

Oh yeah that proves it all right. Wrong! Look through the roll call votes for the 111th Congress, House of Representatives, and see which party voted for the most bills. Find the bills that passed the House and pick their roll number:
        http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/index.asp

Poor Republicans didn’t have a chance in this contest!

        • eyeswideopen

No, they didn’t have a chance during that time frame. What about the time fram of 1995 to 2006, when they had control, what did they do then? Passed the largest bill in history to cause the biggest deficit in history. Increased the size of government and took away our rights. Oh, us poor Republicans we were at the wheel for so long and didn’t know how to steer it!!!! Come on Dave, facts are the facts. You are having a hard time finding hard ground to stand on.

        • eyeswideopen

What does that have to do with the amount of earmarks the Repubs are now trying to get? You can’t critize those getting money, when you are getting a bigger slice than the opposing party? Hypocritical!!

      • DaveH

Like I said before Eyes, you are going to need to quit being so obviously partisan or you are going to become irrelevant on this board.

        • eyeswideopen

          Dave,
And you’re not Partisan?? Holy crap,Dave you are so biased against the Democrat’s that I was able to figure out that you were once married to one. Your partisan views are linked somewhat to a personal experience with someone who hurt you. My views are leaning towards the Republican platform, because I am one, however I am calling out my own, to stop making stupid, hypocritical and misleading statements, which are damaging the party. Our party platform of fiscal responsibility was thrown into the mud and stomped on, by our own memembers. I only call out anyone who makes a statement which is either hypocrital or false, and then I just give them the facts.

          George F,

When I was a teen I often wondered about how our country would look if all those “hippies” that were around me took control of our Gov.

          Now I know!

          • eyeswideopen

Mike, those hippies never left your side, they cut their hair and became CEO’s on Wall Street and run the Banks. Didn’t you see the sea of white men, with short haircuts sitting in the House during the Presidents speech? Same guys are spread out all over our fiscal community. They just quit smoking the weed, turned to alcohol.

          • DaveH

They lost me 38 years ago when I was in college and I was surrounded by Liberals who were whining about the administration not allowing them to “say their piece”. Then we had a rally with an ROTC speaker, and these same people harassed and heckled him throughout his speech. And I am no lover of the military state, but I thought they were very rude. The Liberals exposed themselves then and there as colossal hypocrites. And I have seen similar cases throughout my life.

          • eyeswideopen

Dave, that was during the Viet Nam war time frame, college kids were trying to stop the war. Which we did. They couldn’t accept that the Military wanted you to join the ROTC when we were sending kids to a war we couldn’t win and were wasting lives for no reason. You were in college and didn’t believe in Free Speech? Wow, you really had republican leanings at that time ugh? I find it interesting that you had such a good education, and yet you slam our system and want it to be a private system, which would allow a disproportionate amount of wealthy to remain at the top of the social ladder. Why aren’t you for reforming the public system?

          • s c

This is what happens when ‘compassionate, peace-loving’ idealists get a taste of power. They get addicted fast. They refuse to kick the habit. Their masters brainwash them into believing that they have all the answers. Of course, they can’t furnish any proof that anything will change in any positive sense. You could call these losers the product of outcome-based insanity.
Lenin and Marx should have put another concept in that damned nation-destroying dictionary they created. It’s now known as ‘power – the drug of the elected.’ Full-blown paranoia is but one side-effect. Another side-effect is a nation full of miserable people who finally see these losers for who they are. They are no less than willing sons and daughters of every evil personality and wannabe dictator the world has ever known.

          • DaveH

            Eyeswideshut,
What part of ‘Free’ speech do you not understand? Do you even read my comments? I guess only you Liberals can speak freely.
The public system is beyond reforming. It has been subverted by people who want to share other peoples’ money while convincing themselves that they are only taking from the rich. Your kind has been taking from me my entire life and I am far from rich. My money has been earned with illness and hard work, more so than anyone I know personally. You and the people you stick up for are just practicing the politics of envy while wearing heavy blinders.
Why don’t you split up George Soros money? Or split up John Rockefeller’s money? Or the money of many other rich people and corporations that make up the Democrat Party? You are incredible hypocrites. I thought there was hope for you, but I guess not. You have gotten too far over to the dark side.

          • eyeswideopen

Dave, I’m all for taking more money from the extremely wealthy, heck Warren Buffet offered that he doesn’t pay enough in taxes, that actually his Sec. pays more. If a man of that stature feels as though he isn’t pulling his fair share, it probably means that they aren’t. Yes, I read your comments, and that doesn’t mean that I agree with just trashing our public school system, I would like to see if it can be repaired prior to causing such an economic tragedy. We have enough serious fiscal problems. I don’t trash my car when it breaks and run out ans buy a new one, I try to fix it first. If you were offened during the late sixties and early 70′s by the outspoken college kids, you must have had very conservative political views, was my conclusion. I know what your views on Free Speech are today. Dave, you quickly come to a wrong conclusion and react with such distain it is something to behold. I wasn’t as fortunate as you, my parents couldn’t send me to private school, nor to college, it took me many years of nite school, while married and when lacking money for both my husband and I to attend, as the woman, I had to withdraw, you know us women were supposed to just clean house not exercise our brains. While holding down a full time job, going to nite school, I was responsible for two of my grandparents who weren’t well. So you can take your statement about my kind taking your money and shove it. It is a good thing that you aren’t the keeper of the Libertarian Party isn’t it? That party stand for things that you don’t. You preach it, but don’t live it. I see some manic depression in your persona, which I am very familiar with, ex husband was very much like you.

          • JeffH

DaveH: well said…basically exposed again and again and again.

        • DaveH

And I take back my invitation, Eyes. I don’t want people in the Libertarian Party who are motivated by greed and envy to confiscate or dismantle what others have built.

          • eyeswideopen

Dave, you are delusional, you don’t have the power to offer or resind an invitation to the party. Your mind is like a steel trap which closes so quickly it sends shocks through out the intelligence community. See Dave I can be just as nasty as you, I don’t like it, but I can do it too.

          • DaveH

And you are a typical Liberal, whose class envy blinds her eyes with an opaque green film.

          • JeffH

DaveH…at least your comments don’t reflect “hate”, but they do expose your self confidence, which many others do not.

          • Smilee

Jeff if you can’t see the hate davie is filled with your as blind as he is, him SC and others here are motivated by their hatreds and it distorts their ability to have any rational thought. Hatred does that to you every time

Matt, before you jump the gun, you need to take a look at the earmarks for the Republicans.

  • Matt V

watch out when oil goes up because we are heading towards a double dip recission. Obama said in his speech that we are having a jobless recovery in this recession. i wonder how many people who listened to his speech picked up on that.

    • s c

Be glad you picked up on it, Matt V. This is an example of a ‘leader’ who specializes in blending lies with the truth. In comrade obama’s case, it’s mostly lies. Even he can’t lie all the time – though he does seem to try very hard every day (it’s what freedom-haters do best).

    • DaveH

      Matt,
Get prepared for Stagflation (bad economy, ever-higher prices).

  • Rich

Hey Mack the only time in history I have found that our countries government was not corrupt was before the civil war, yea know way back before Lincoln decided to spit on the 10th amendment and bash state sovereignty. He did do some very good things also like freeing the slaves as a good Libertarian I feel all men, whatever their beliefs, creed, orientation or whatever are guaranteed the same rights as the founders tried to give their children. The supreme court since then has spit on the 10th amendment in upholding federal over local/state law, which according to the 10th amendment, at least the interpretation I have it was that all things not explicitly given to the federal government are the sovereignty of the state and those not given the state are the people’s. What Republican or Democrat has ever preached, stated or even mentioned anything along those lines in the last 50 years? The republicans, usually the religious fundamental ones, try to control people through there religious views against certain things they find disdainful and the democrats well just outright want, as Orwell taught us in the book 1984, BIG BROTHER to become a reality (Republicans go there also what with the patriot Act passed by a majority of Republicans in office). A wise man once said to keep religion and government apart, well I agree 100%, and another man said the country where the people are reliant on the government for anything is an enslaved country. I take the first to mean honor your religious past but do not pass any laws passed solely on religious teachings, and I take the second to mean that well that one is quite obvious and that is any socialized nation is a nation enslaved to their government. I have said this many times in these forums and that is both parties are corrupt and full of corruption and the only real way to save this country is to start over by voting in a third party to power, I personally will be voting strictly Libertarian values this next and all of the following elections. Does that mean only Libertarian candidates, no it means any candidate that has shown they are for limited federal government and individual freedoms/liberties.

      Rich,
Good luck finding those candidates outside of the Libertarian Party.
There have been a few non-Libertarians (such as Ronald Reagan) who have stood for reducing the size of government, but they are pretty scarce.

      • eyeswideopen

Yea, but good old Ronnie, granted amnesty to two million illegal immigrates and allowed for certain ones to receive Medicare benefits. So is he the best example of reducing government? Just allowing that many illegals into country had to make the government grow a little bit don’t you think?

        • Smilee

Good old Ronnie is the father of the hate government syndrome and his only real success was accomplishing that and bringing all these hateful ones out of the wood work and that is why we have so much unrest today. When history gets done vetting him he will not be the messiah to anyone and will be known best for his skill as an actor.

    • Smilee

Your another one that lives in the distant past and is incapable in dealing with the world today on a rational level, The Libertarian party is incapable of anything especially getting votes and can attract so few people and therefore they are totally irrelevant and that is why davie is too, He is never going accomplish anything but venting through his constant complaining and whining, is that your problem too.

    VOTE THE BUMS OUT

  • DaveH

Roll Call Votes for 110th Congress House of Representatives (last two years of Bush presidency). Look for Roll numbers that have ‘on passage’ in the Question column. Those are Bills that have been passed out of the House of Representatives. You can see for yourself who the Big Spenders are. Try to find a Bill that the Democrats didn’t love. Pick the Roll number for the vote tallies. Pick the Bill number (in the ‘issue’ column) to see information on the Bill.

How many of you people attended the “Tea Party” yesterday in your
states? I attended the one held in my state. It was well worth
while and required a little more effort than just talk. The Feds.
are after you’re freedom and your ,right to LIVE! Better wake up!

Glad you enjoyed it but you wasted your time

What about the total lack of coverage Saturday’s Washington March got from the left-wing liberal networks? The 3 networks are selectively
choosing the stories they will cover. An event of this magnitude should be covered, but because it doesn’t agree with the management of the broadcasting company’s liberal ideology as being newsworthy, Americans are not seeing it, or hearing it. When a country fails to get news other than what the gov’t determines is in the best interest of the government, (and we all know ABC, CBS, and MSNBC are in bed with Obama) than you have jounalistic censorship. Thank God for Fox News which gives us the other side of the story, or we’d all become left-wing robots who believe everything they hear, see, or read that slants toward liberal ideology.

How did you find out about the idiot shouting at the President? Were’t you watching “So you think you can Dance? Oh, my did you change the channel? Glory be!! I see how they program, they didn’t want their viewers to be informed, so they gave you the “Fox Trot” instead. LOL

    • eyeswideopen

Babu, I did see it on CNN, It was a sea of white, elderly Republicans, no young or minorities, just a sea of militant white Medicare eligible Repub’s. Sorry about only 20-25K showing up, maybe because they charged an entrance fee, more couldn’t attend. What happened to Land of the Free, didn’t the sponsor know about our economic downturn?

Babushka, the ‘mainstream’ media gladly suffers from selective amnesia (and other integrity maladies). ABC, CBS and NBC [comrade obama's media hookers] sold their posteriors long ago. It’s about time their illegitimate mothers and fathers (newspapers) are about to fade into history.
America can’t expect objective reporting from fifth-rate media whores. What they don’t like is the FACT that America is tired of being ignored by people who couldn’t buy journalistic integrity via the back page of a comic book.
The media, like their pimp pals in Washington, are happy to confuse prostitution with respectability. When it comes to calculating the number of people who descended on Washington, I’m surprised those media sidewalk stewies didn’t say that no one showed up. What do you expect from people who will say and do anything to protect people who think yellow journalism is a high art form?

BABUSHSKA, Well spoken and their ratings reflect it! No one wants to hear that B.S. any more.

You know, after reading all the discussions above, I can’t help but wonder why you all aren’t putting all the time you waste spitting venom on anyone who loves and cares about our Constitution and our country and its history and spout off such ignorant statements like ‘living in the past’ the past is what made our country great that most of you are obviously unfamiliar with, and arguing over the two parties we have to choose from, when neither of them have honored our Constitution and stood for what is right for America (although Democrats have helped destroy morality in America) greed is what seems to lead the way in Washington, they just dress it in a different dress. I have wasted my time here just as you all are wasting yours. This may be the ‘Land of the Free’, but that doesn’t mean ‘Free land, Free food, Free education, Free healthcare, Free everything to all the greedy people. But ignorance prevails in so many of these discussions, it’s like a bunch of hot heads sounding off just to hear themselves rattle. I can always tell the ones who are Democrats, liberals, expecting the government to provide everything for Free. I think their great grandfather must have been Stalin. Living in today is sheer hell when compared to even 50 years ago when the government at least pretended to follow the Constitution. Now, our government, ALL OF IT, just acts as if they have no idea of what’s happening in America and keep the ‘people’ doing what you all are doing – focusing on yourselves, trying to prove a point to someone that’s part of the problem, who has no idea what they are talking about and doesn’t really want to know. They are not worth the time it takes to argue with them. It’s downright disgusting. This one doesn’t hold a candle; however, to the gay rights discussion. That shouldn’t even be shown on this site. Those people don’t have a mind at all, just something else leading them.

The reason they take the earmarks is because we do not hold them accountable,we elect time after time. I would like a term limit and will fight for it next election, No more than two terms. No more pensions for life after only two terms, they pay s.s. same as us. same health care as us and they pay the same. No more using the air force as a private airline. No more five star dining in the house dining rooms, they order in or go out to eat.they get three weeks vacation, not six months. many more ideas.

    • eyeswideopen

Bill, yes, yes, yes, We do need to reign them in.

    • TxDC

In our two-party system, when they both do the same things, we can’t “hold” them accountable – not any more. Not our presidents either. I think the ONLY way to hold them accountable is for ALL of us to vote for a 3rd & 4th political party such as “The U.S. Constitution Party” and/or The U.S. Socialist Party (or Communist Party). This might help people figure out who and what they are voting for. However, without all voters in the U.S. agreeing NOT to vote FOR ANYONE who has EVER HELD A POLITICAL OFFICE BEFORE. We have millions of people SMART enough to run our country and being a “politician” should automatically disquality any candidate from running as they become corrupted by all the other long time politicians. Actually we should demand a law that prevents and overturns all Congressional salary increases since they’ve been in office. Actually those kicked out of Washington should be required to return all monies they’ve received from special interest groups and other means. If the U.S. Constitution Party is elected, all unconstitutional laws, (not directly set out in the original Constitution w/Amendments), acts and orders since 1930 would automatically repealed instantly. If a U.S. Communist Party were to be elected, (I hope we don’t have so many ignorant people in our country that they would think this would be a good idea, or that they would get everything free from the government), then I guess many of us would have to leave the country or take up arms to prevent that from happening.
