Democrats to Fast-track Legislation Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Democrats to Fast-track Legislation Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Democrats have put legislation to curb greenhouse gases on the fast track in their efforts to rein in global warming even though scientists disagree on whether it is a man-caused phenomenon.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., hopes to get a bill out of his committee by Memorial Day, claiming that inaction on the climate issue is causing uncertainties that make it more difficult to emerge from the recession.

But nothing could be further from the truth. One of the key components Democrats are pushing is Cap and Trade, which sets limits on carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use and allows companies which fall under those limits to trade or sell their excess to those that do not. It is a bill that will kill American industry.

While the legislation outlining how much greenhouse gases should be reduced has yet to be written, during his campaign President Obama called for greenhouse gas levels to be reduced by 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. Legislation considered but not passed last year would have reduced gases 25 percent by 2020.

It was not as drastic as Obama’s goals. But, according to a report by the Heritage Foundation that legislation, if passed, would have cost each American household as much as $1,300 by 2015 and $2,500 by 2050. It would also have driven up electricity and gasoline prices.

Further Heritage Foundation analysis states a bill requiring cutting carbon emissions by that amount, which is essentially a tax on energy, will cost the country hundreds of thousands of jobs and an overall reduction in the gross domestic product of $1.7 trillion to $4.8 trillion by 2030. So, if Obama has his way job losses caused by increased energy costs, fines and regulations on businesses would be even greater.

As the government pushes toward legislation to stop global warming, consider the facts. The earth’s temperature has actually decreased since reaching its peak in 1997. Human activity contributes only about one-fourth of 1 percent of all CO2 in the atmosphere. And most scientists are now admitting that nothing man can do will affect atmospheric temperatures.

Environmentalism is the new home of socialists and those who seek to destroy capitalism and freedom. Any legislation aimed at combating a non-existent problem will hurt the country through loss of jobs, increased taxation and reduction of freedoms. This is not what the country needs in this, or any, economic climate.

The enviromentalist will use any means they can to break us financially with supposedly green house warming. Here in WA. State they used the spotted owl and passed legislation banning the cutting of timber. Now trees are a renewable product, but you wouldn`t think so listening to the enviromentalist. The results were devastating. People went broke and lived with their famiies in cars. The lumber mills shut down.
Everytime I hear of going green…I get a feeling of being had.

    • Salmon

I can about guarantee you will not get a kiss either!

    • Dean2009

You are so right to be suspicious of the term “going green”. While I am all for reduction of waste and plundering forests, natural gas, iron ore, energy expended in extracting aluminum, water (waste and pollution), I will look first at motive when the Greenie Weenies begin their panicky talk about turning over your rights and property to them to avoid certain disaster. I do not fear the end of the world so much as I do the end of civilization at the hands of these dictatorial self-styled saviors. Did not Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon, Mao Tse Tung, the Roman emperors all think they were doing what was best for the world?

    • Jim Hauser

Since actual science repudiates the green movement, and they continue to push their poison regardless of the facts, I’m convinced that their true motivation stems from a basic desire to use “stealth” methods to weaken and/or collectively destroy the economy of The United States. Do I subscribe to a conspiracy theory? None in particular, but these people are either so ignorant that they can be influenced by mere scare tactics or they are truly enemies of the U.S. I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I can’t afford it any more. Either way, I’ve had a stomach full.

In effect, the new regime can pass any legislation they want. This bypasses debate AND ‘bipartisnship.’ The American people MUST demand that ALL new legislation is thoroughly read for content. That way, we won’t get stuck with more self-serving, pork stimulus packages or more immoral, unconstitutional wish-lists.
The American people are expected to foot the bill for Congressional incompetence. Is it unreasonable to feel that we actually get positive, concrete results for having the BEST government that MONEY can buy?
Maybe it’s just me, but it does seem that we have found ways to elect people who can’t read, don’t want to read, and couldn’t read if they were morally and legally required to do so (i. e., Congress and the White House).

Maybe this poster could learn some grammar and spelling.

People, What got us here in the first place.. everybody new the O.P.E.C. was after the USA and with the help of the Oil producing Countries of the Middle East and the rest of the cohorts like Iran and Chavez were aimed at bringing The USA to its knees
and make life miserable as long as it took.. like if pumping drugs over here weren’t
enough… I ask Where would you have put your dollars to begin with? The enviromentalist jumped in the wagon hauling in the greeners with .. Bring down the
energy cost thru clean energy.. Say how much of the Stimulus Package would’ve taken to bring in line ten (10) Nuclear Electric Plants in the next three Years to cut oil
imports by the Billions? Are we putting ouir money to work for Americans or Where
are we sending it? America WAKE UP

    • Salmon

Even if they were 10 billion, you could bring enough on line to shut down the oil tanker business! But, we would all have to drive electric cars after awhile.

  • NeoCleo

I responded to a poll on the Huffington Post, admittedly a web log of equal parts fluff to political content, little suspecting that my response led me straight into the jaws of a self-styled ultra-conservative spider parked in his own little corner of the web waiting patiently for blundering dumbass liberals like me to set off his trip wire. Come try to sink your fans into us, Mr. Livingston, pump us full of your political neurotoxic cocktail: equal parts stale right-wing fear mongering, your personal brand of white guy flop sweat by product blended to a smooth cold consistency with cubes of icy contempt for all things of the vast world view/alternative solutions beyond the reach of someone of your limited scope of mind. If you can catch us, I daresay the consequences of sinking your fangs into our current economic catastrophe would result in a tottering super power being reduced to a gelationous puddle of necrotic spider feed. Good for you and others like you who feed off the remains of their own kind, but strictly bullshit if our society is to have a chance of surviving as humans, not insects.

Still, you have the right to be, such as your are. “I wouldn’t wanna be like you.” I’ll take my chances with the majority of pissed off citizens in this country who want to regain some sense of honor and dignitiy which they know can’t be found following you and the rest of the suckers like you.

I’ll be watching more carefully in the future. Thanks for the ugly reality check.

    • Mark

NeoCleo — the same thing happened to me! since then, i’ve been posting on as many articles here as i can, basically trying to show people that this livingston guy is an ultra-conservative nutjob. conservatism is a dead philosophy, stop trying to bring it back to life, is what i say.

      • Dean2009

Mark, I know just how you feel. About every 20 years or so this proven failure rears it’s ugly head again and I wonder again why will they never learn? I am not fearful today as I was during the dark days of Jimmy Carter or Lyndon Johnson, after all Reality has the final vote, but I am still saddened and disappointed when so many sheep with the right to vote rise up and try it again. It blocks progress, wastes resources, but most of all it always reduces quality of life. As Neo-Cleo says , you have a right to be as you are. Everybody has the right to be wrong. Conservatism, a failed philosophy? Talk about a nut job! Try liberalism.

    • Salmon

It seems to me, that most of the fear mongering is coming from the extreme left in the country. Starting at the white house and through all of the talking heads on TV.
Conservatism is not what got us in this sorry shape, it was a conflagration of purposeful taken steps, by the private bankers who own our govt! (the best money can buy)

  • Mark

as for the post, i understand that there is no scientific consensus and agree that we shouldn’t try to stop “global warming” yet because i’m not convinced. yes, there is significant evidence that it is happening and there is evidence that it is not (or that it’s a natural part of the earth’s life cycle), even though i personally believe that humans have caused it. but i don’t want legislation that is in line with my personal beliefs just because i believe them — i take into account other people’s views and arguments (when valid). but this is the kicker for me: the only organization that still believes that humans aren’t causing global warming is the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. I mean, come on! The only people who dissent from the position of all other organizations that have studied it is the organization representing the people who would be hurt the most by reduced use of fossil fuels? wow. just… wow.

but if you’re not going to reduce greenhouse gases because they are supposedly linked to global warming, do it because they are POISON! people who live by coal-burning power plants will tell you horror stories about what they have done to their communities. pollution is a horrible blight on our world that is definitely caused by human behavior (reckless, self-serving, who-cares-about-anything-but-the-bottom-line behavior). all over the country people are banning cigarette smoking indoors because it causes POLLUTION and DISEASE! so why not be wary of the biggest cigarettes out there: power plant smoke stacks?!

and if you don’t care about pollution for some reason (i suspect because you’re a terrible person) or if you do and want a second reason, here ya go: it will cost less to power the country if we use alternative sources of energy. yes, it will cost a lot up front for building the infrastructure, but america has done that before (laying cable in the 1990s, building highways in the 1950s, …) and it always worked out for the best. not to mention the amount of jobs that will be created, which are desperately needed right now.

solar, wind, and geothermal energy are all abundant, natural, and clean sources of energy that humans haven’t tapped into because we are controlled by Big Oil. instead of mindlessly dissenting with everyone who knows what they’re talking about because that’s what your political party tells you to do, you should try to think for yourself — read reports, talk to your congressman, search for answers not endorsed by those who stand to lose or gain — because that’s how you become an empowered member of society.

  • Bobby

Yeah read reports and do some studying, it doesn’t take long to realize that human caused global warming is one of the biggest hoaks ever played on mankind. Leading weather expert after expert will tell you it’s all BS.

    Let’s see here’s 31,000+ scientist, 9,000 of which are PHD’s.

650 more of some of the leading, award winning scientists from all around the world, some of who even fell for the scam for a while themselves.

I can produce one after another from around the world, leading, respected scientists.

The oppsoing view is mostly, nah, that’s wrong. I’ll be happy to look at any real info otherwise, not govt sponsored groups that get rich from the “human induced” scam.

    • Salmon

And it probably is a safe bet, none of them own a big oil company.

      • Gigi

Wow – lots of words. Greenhouse Gasses is almost my favorite euphemism. It is impossible to have greenhouse gasses unless you are in a closed environment i.e a greenhouse. Earth is not a closed environment. Also, there is absolutely not one shred of eveidence to show that global warming is real nor is there any eveidence that humans have caused any change at all in our climate. Real scientists know that the temperature of the earth has been in a cooling trend, the polar ice caps are growing and the polar bear population is on the increase. Listen, I’m all for doing what we can to be good stewards of our environment but this nonsense is distracting and silly. Have we polluted? To be sure but this new move to reduce humanity to some sort of global environmental “criminal” serves no purpose except, as I see it, to divide and conquer while people with their own agenda for our planet continue to force their unsubstantiated claims on the rest of us.

        • Gigi

          Oop! sorry for the typos.

  • Susan Carpenter

Does anyone have some basic background and criminal record search sites to add to my link list on my web site. Can anyone tell me how the owners of these sites access these databases. Do they work for the county or state?

  • http://þÿ Joshua Fairfield

I precisely had to thank you very much once again. I’m not certain the things that I might have worked on without those pointers revealed by you about such industry. Previously it was an absolute frustrating problem in my view, however , understanding this specialised form you dealt with the issue forced me to weep with happiness. I am just happy for this service as well as hope you comprehend what a great job that you are getting into educating people through your web page. I am sure you haven’t encountered any of us.
