Democrats look to evade GOP interference, merge healthcare bill behind closed doors Democrats in the House and Senate intend to bypass conventional procedures by negotiating the merger of the two versions of the healthcare bills behind closed doors, a move that will prevent Republicans from delaying or modifying the process, the Associated Press reports.

Typically, competing bills are settled in a conference committee made up of bipartisan members of the House and Senate. Because they do not need any support from the GOP, Democrats may draft a compromised version of the bill in a three-way negotiation involving the White House and both houses of Congress.

Republicans argued earlier this week that the maneuver would violate Democrats’ pledges of government transparency, according to The Baltimore Sun.

"Something as critical as the Democrats’ healthcare bill . . . shouldn’t be slapped together in a shady backroom deal," Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner, told AP.

"Skipping a real, open conference shuts out the American people and breaks one of President Obama’s signature campaign promises," he added.

If Democrats decide to conduct negotiations outside of a committee, they will have a better chance of finalizing the legislation before their new goal of the State of the Union address later this month.

    How many times did Obama say “we’ll put the debate on Health Care on CSPAN” while he was on the campaign trail? I’ve counted at least 8 times now. But like Nancy Pelosi said, “A lot of things are said on the campaign trail. Tee! Hee! Hee!”. Do you really think that politicians are really going keep their promise once they get elected? What kind of Representative Government do you think we have? Come on people, Get real!!! Do you think that if they were to tell you that they had unicorns & magic fairies that would sprinkle fairy dust on everything & make it come up sunshine & lollypops, that they would do it? No! But they know you would vote for them, because it sounds good & makes you all toasty inside. They think, “You don’t want the truth! You can’t handle the truth!”
    Maybe, they are doing the Health Care Reform bill behind closed locked doors & keeping the Republicans out because that’s were they keep Obama’s Birth & School Records. Or, perhaps that’s were the closet is were all the Liberals keep there skeletons.
    Sure, that whole open & honest debate thing would be great, but how would the Dems get anything done with the citizens looking over their shoulder & getting mad at them when the people see that what they are doing is going to destroy America. YOU people just need to get off their backs, they are doing everything they can to give you what they think you need. It shouldn’t matter whether you want it or not, they think its the best thing for you. And which matters more, what you want or what politicians want you to have? I think we all know the answer to that.

    This health care bill is not wanted by a vast majority of the American people, & I am one of them. In the future elections I will definitely not vote for anyone who has suported this piece communistic legislation , in any form period!!! My days of voting for Democrats is now a thing of the past. This is just another way for the democrat’s to gain more control of our lives.

    i swear to god a group of grade school kids would act more civilized and take the rules more seriously than either party in congress, and would do a better job to.

It was like the Repubs were afraid to usurp any authority at all. I was and still am very disappointed in the Republican party.
      I want them to get back to the basics and they want to be progressive. So I am a Conservative. We need a Conservative Party as we seem to have to Liberal ones.

    I am sure that other people have thought of this since I am no expert in Government proceedings. I am a 20 year retired Master Chief Petty Officier of the US Navy, I live in Oklahoma. My Senators and my Rep. are all Republicans. I pay Federal taxes (a lot of them) I pay state taxes, county taxes, taxes on everything I buy, a good 60 percent of my income goes for taxes.

    If the Democratic party locks my reps. out of the sessions, is this not taxation without repersentation? Wasn’t that what the war in 1776 was all about? Is there anything that can be done about this? I did not vote for (and never would) ANY of the people that will be in that room. In fact I question the sanity of anyone that did vote for these idiots.

    This is a ‘strategic move’ by the Repubs.. to STOP this bill, waiting for the outcome of the MASS. Senate Race,(Jan. 19th, a special election to replace Ted Kennedy’s seat!) hoping that Republican Scott Brown will win, and break the ‘Majority’ of 60 votes!! There are NO checks & balances now, and we definatley need LESS spending!!

    THIS TIME, Republican Leader McConnell (at the behest of Sen. DeMint) actually objected to the appointment of the conferees — something that’s almost never done. That means that the Senate ObamaCare bill must be amended on the House floor to gain the votes they need to pass it on the House floor. And because of Sen. DeMint’s objection to the appointment of the conferees, there will be no conference, or conference report. Democrats can resort to a fallback: they can propose a motion to appoint conferees, but that motion is subject to filibuster. It would likely require three separate cloture votes just to pass the motion to appoint conferees! So — the Senate bill goes back to the House, which will have to debate it all over again… including amending it.

    If the House amends the Senate bill, they then have to send the amended bill back to the Senate — where all the 60 vote margin cloture votes still apply — cloture on the motion to proceed, cloture to end the filibuster, and cloture on any amendment.

    And you can bet that the House WILL amend the Senate bill. There are PLENTY of disagreements among Democrats in the House over Harry Reid’s compromise bill, in areas like abortion, the public option, illegal immigrant coverage, taxation of union health care plans, and the degree of subsidy available for purchase of health care. Any ONE of these can SINK Obamacare!

    This Bill will hopefully be SUNK, HOWEVER Obama wants it passed before his ‘State of the Union’ address… late January or early February! That means that they will hold more ‘behind closed door’ meetings and probably MORE BRIBES & CORRUPTION, at taxpayer’s expense. I would prefer that the bill be ‘bi-partisan’, to give it VALIDITY..We need healthcare reform, but not when you’re handing the Taxpayers a huge bill & cutting Medicare on Seniors!! All of this wrangling, to cover 4% of the uninsured? Doesn’t make sense.. What about the 24 Million that won’t be covered? Where will they go? The E.R.’s of course, and WE will still pay … Let’s get this bill RIGHT before we ‘settle for a bad bill’ that will only raise TAXES on all Americans … That’s what the Dems are really wanting to do… raise taxes to pay for it, but benefits WON’T be available for 3-4 years???? Will they ‘save’ the $$$ or spend it?

    Does anyone really believe what Obama says anymore? He’s LIED, LIED, LIED .. and one thing that American’s don’t like is a LIAR!!! If Obama had any ‘integrity’ he’d honor his own promises, but as we can see, his INTEGRITY isn’t worth a ‘tinker’s damn’.. I don’t plan on listening or watching the ‘State of the Union’ address… that will be just ‘more lies’, and I am DONE!! I WATCH what he does!! We all need to be ‘watching him carefully’, and do not ‘trust’ what he says. This is the FIRST President we’ve ever had that has lost TRUST with 52% or more of the American people..and it hasn’t even been a year yet !… We’ve figured it out that he lies, he’s a Muslim sympathizer (maybe a Muslim himself), anti-American, a SOCIALIST and tearing our great Country down as fast as he can … economically & socially!! There is NO ‘Middle Class’ anymore.. Unemployment at 10% and no hope of it improving anytime soon… Have you ever seen a Country so DIVIDED as now?       That is a good article, but I don’t know how much good it will do to send letters to them, because THEY DON’T CARE! They don’t care what we want, They don’t care if they get reelected & They don’t care about the Constitution. All they do care about is getting their agenda done & about pushing us down that progressive road.
      If a million, 10 million or even 50 million of us gathered upon the lawn in Washington to say “Kill the Bill!!!”, they would just look out and say, “Look at that Astro-Turf”. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t send letters to those in Congress, because we should, on a daily basis. But to look at the reality of it all, in the end I don’t know what good it will do. We need some way to bring the full force of the people down on them, I’m not talking about an armed revolt, but some way to make them stop their expansion of government. There has to some way to hold them accountable for violating the Constitution, with having to wait to vote them out. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them.

        Many States are looking at the concept of “nullification”. That is to pass laws nullifying the Unconstitutional Laws being passed by Congress. If your state is one of them, contact your State Government Reps and let them know you support them. If not, contact your State Reps and ask them why they don’t.

          Although I like the act of nullification, I was thinking more along the lines of recalling our Reps. It seems that it would be a lot easier to, when our Reps are continuously passing laws that clearly go against the Constitution, to replace them, than it would to nullify every bill that stepped on our rights. I would rather know that we could place someone in the Congress that would follow the Constitution with the threat hanging over their head that they could be fired at anytime, instead of waiting until the end of their term as it is now, than wait the years that it would surely take for the debate & judicial proceedings that would follow enacting nullification. It may be something that might buy us some time, but with the fact that it has been evoked with “differing degrees of success”, doesn’t seem to be a long term solution. I mean, just think about what’s going on with the gun rights, I know it’s not exactly the same, but is that something that we are going to have to go through every time an Unconstitutional Bill gets passed into Law. It seems like we would have lawyers stepping out of the wood work to fight against the states rights. Anyway that’s just my thoughts.

            With the gun rights, the states passed a law saying they aren’t subject to federal laws for state manufactured handguns. That will cover any federal gun law (which is still Unconstitutional).
            The thing with the elections at the Federal level is that even if we replace all the Republicans with new blood, what guarantee will we have that they will do any better? Can we trust the Republicans to have the fortitude to cut back on the size of government when the Liberals are screaming bloody murder about being weaned from the Government Teet? I doubt it.
            Our nation became the greatest country in the world under the Limited Government and Economic Freedom established by our Founders. Both parties have indulged in regulating the heck out of our economy and growing government to the point of our becoming a Debtor Nation.

            My statement about the “gun rights” was only to point out the fight going on in the courts & how long it has been going on. Just wanted to clarify.

            As for you statement about the Republican Party, you make good points, but I don’t think that changing parties is the solution. The problem isn’t with the party, because no matter the party we elect, power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely. The problem isn’t with the parties, it is with “We the People”, it is our fault that we have let the government get out of control. As Conservatives & Libertarians, to place the blame on the party is no better than Liberals placing blame on rich white people, or someone else, for the problems they have. To correct what’s wrong with the government, we first have to take personal responsibility for what’s wrong. The only way to keep the government in check, is to hold the true power of America, its people, over their head. I know that you believe in your party, and I’m not trying to sway you from believing in your party, because at least you (unlike the Dems) want to stay within the Constitution.

            I also believe the Libertarian Party is the most principled party. Our form of freedom is the most simple and defensible of all the partys. We believe in individual liberty and individual responsibility. We believe a person has sole rights over his/her own body and property. If a person foolishly wants to drink or do drugs, for instance, that is his choice as long as he doesn’t harm others. And I don’t mean potential harm, as there is no end to that pathway of logic. And when those free people do all the wrong things they have no rights to live on the backs of those who did the right things unless somebody volunteers to help them.

            You’re probably right about the Republicans increasing the size of government if they become the majority party again. I think history speaks for itself in that regard. However, I would point out that it was under Newt Gingrich and a Republican Congress that the budget was in fact pared back and we did see a surplus for the first in recent history. I think the Republicans got the message last election, so I’m hoping they’ll be more responsible going forward. If they don’t, the party could be over for them. At any rate, I’m willing to give them another chance because I’m convinced the Democrats are even worse than the Republicans at growing government. However, like you, the number of chances they get from me, could come to an end, especially if I see a better way to cast my vote.

            That’s a little harsh don’t you think? I appears that you only see things in black and white and there are no shades of gray. I’m sorry, I just don’t see your logic that it’s either Libertarian or nothing at all. When you equate the Democrats with the Republicans it only shows your bias for your own party.

            Let me ask you this, what are you going to do when the Dems get amnesty for all those illegal aliens passed as they are going to try to do this year. Are you going to feel the same when they dump 30 million Democratic voters into the system and there is no chance for a Libertarian, or for that matter a Republican to ever when an election. What are you going to do when the Liberals completely take over and grow the government so big that the Constitution is no more toilet paper that they wipe with.

            I know the Republicans aren’t perfect, but true Conservative Republicans are far from the lesser of two evils, and in the past, have shrunk government. I can see your passion as a Libertarian, but you know sometimes you can’t get where you want to be by taking a giant leap, sometimes you have to take smaller steps. Your first concern should be how best to stop the growth of government now, not whether you are going to everything you want right this instant. Because if we don’t get the growth stopped first, we may never get it shrunk.

            I understand your logic in what you say about drinking and drugs, but I wonder if you would say the same thing if one of your immediate family were killed by a drunk driver or a person whacked out on drugs. Let’s tell the truth, the drug war is not the only reason that druggies prey on people! In fact they also do things they wouldn’t do if not for the fact that they are screwed up on drugs!!!!

In 1776 an active free press was what enabled some great men to found a great nation. Well, our press (including TV, radio, etc.) appears to have sold out. What’s left? The internet! An informed citizen is a free citizen! Spread the news of how our elected officials are lying and renegging on their promises so that all those who were hoodwinked in November 2008 will see the truth. And thank God for people like Chip Wood.

You have a chance to step up to the plate and make sound fiscal and national defense improvements…..so it would be nice if you’ll simply do so.

      Regarding the health care reform issue, I expect the Congress and the Senate to have the same health care plan and costs the rest of us will have imposed on us. If you don’t support that, then you may as well simply vote “present”.

    The Jackass Party may be able to avoid the Republicans but they are not going to avoid the 70% and growing number of dissatisfied citizens, voters and taxpayers or the improving tactics of the Tea Party people who refuse to “not” let their voice be heard.

    The Jackass Party has never been in this much trouble and it will be far worse than any blows they suffered when they had to bow to the Contract with America. This is going to be a reorganization of Congress and how it runs, it will change the way elected officials are put in office and force them to adhere to ethics.

    You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that what is going on behind closed doors in Washington bends toward being absolutely being illegal,unconstitutional, and just plain wrong. When you feel your gut speaking it is usually true. There has got to be a way to stop this political disaster before a signature gets attached to this bill. The power mongers have to be halted because if you have to push for something as hard as they are pushing and more than half the citizens of the U.S. do not want it, the power train that is pushing the bill through at 1000 miles per hour needs the brakes applied because at this speed if hit with the health-care bill the entire country will be crushed.

    Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected.

    To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession.

    The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business, and put everyone into a government run system. All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats, and most of them will not be health care professionals. Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled by the government.

    However, as scary as all of that is, it just scratches the surface. In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of government that has ever occurred, or even been contemplated If this law or a similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively have been destroyed.

    The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American people, and the businesses they own.

    The irony is that the Congress doesn’t have any authority to legislate in most of those areas to begin with! I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of Congress to regulate health care.

    This legislation also provides for access, by the appointees of the Obama administration, of all of your personal healthcare direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution information, your personal financial information, and the information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.

    If you decide not to have healthcare insurance, or if you have private insurance that is not deemed acceptable to the Health Choices Administrator appointed by Obama, there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a tax instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment. However, that doesn’t work because since there is nothing in the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is definitely depriving someone of property without the due process of law.

    So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so much, out the original ten in the Bill of Rights, that are effectively nullified by this law It doesn’t stop there though.

    The 9th Amendment that provides: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;

    The 10th Amendment states: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas that once were theirs to control.

    I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of both houses of Congress to “be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution.” If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or anything like it, without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway, I would hope the American people would hold me accountable.

    For those who might doubt the nature of this threat, I suggest they consult the source, the US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. There you can see exactly what we are about to have taken from us.

    I called my representative in Navarre ohio Guess what THEY dont know where this clowns at now Surprised Iam not did I get a returned call Nooooo ! The behind closed door stuff doesnt suprise me at all with the socialists in Washington its all a power grab & taxes Amnesty for illegals just to make sure THEY vote for More socialists They have voided the U.S Constitution We Have NO representation in Washington , Wonder HOW soon elections will be banned We as a nation need to exile these SOCIALISTS before another revolution starts its coming if this mindless bs continues Why do you wonder THEY are so anti gun for private ownership This exactly how Hitler came into power, Oh lets not forget we now have Interpol here now (same folks that hunted jews down for Hitler ) Sure looks a lot like Germany around 1939 doesnt it
