Critics Lambast Obama Administration Following Lift Of Drilling Ban

October 19, 2010 by

Critics lambast Obama administration following lift of drilling banPresident Barack Obama and his administration are being challenged by critics from both political parties following the announcement that the moratorium on deepwater oil drilling will be lifted.

According to media reports, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Oct. 12 that the drilling freeze put in place following the Gulf oil disaster will end several weeks before the original expiration date. The government imposed the moratorium because of the potential threats that drilling could pose to marine, coastal and human environments.

In a press release from the Department of Interior, Salazar stated that deepwater oil and gas drilling can resume only if operators comply with existing rules, including new requirements that recently went into effect.

House Natural Resources Committee member Representative Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) was one of several Republicans to speak out against the announcement, according to TheHill.com.

“The question remains, will the Obama administration actually allow drilling work to resume or is this just pre-election rhetoric?” he told the news provider.

The New York Times reports that Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La.) said the lift is "a step in the right direction," but she would like more clarity about the rules and how they will effect drilling permits. In protest against the moratorium, Landrieu has blocked Obama's nomination of Jack Lew as White House budget director. Following the lift announcement, the Senator said she would continue to oppose the President's nomination until she receives more answers.

“When Congress reconvenes for the lame-duck session next month, I will have had several weeks to evaluate if today’s lifting of the moratorium is actually putting people back to work,” she told the news provider.

Talk is cheap, and our elected retards in Washington are even cheaper. Unless drilling companies can get drilling permits, the idea that The Obummer’s drilling ban has been lifted is nothing but fecal matter.
At this rate, America might as well let China or another “free” country drill for our oil (for a fee, i. e.). At least we wouldn’t have to waste time with a nonfunctional Congress or an utterly worthless White House.

    • eddie47d

Speaking of fecal matter I see you’re the first one out of the gate again. Your cheap talk rules the roost so why are you bothering to accuse others of the same thing?

IF WE DON’T GET THIS DRILLING FOR OIL GOING AGAIN — WE’LL LOSE IT!!
IT WILL GO TO BRAZIL (PETROBRA) & ELSE WHERE!! THEN YOU WILL SEE GAS PRICES GO TO THE CEILING!!

      • Christin

        eddie47d,
Like I told you last time eddie…no one has gone back to work yet. BHO lifting the Gulf off-shore drilling ban maybe just “lip service” (translation… lies) to help the left/ Demos win a few elections… even Demo Landrieu wants to know what the NEW RESTRICTIONS are! That means NO ONE HAS GONE BACK TO DRILLING OFF-SHORE …as all the cards are not on the table, yet… nothing new with this WH.

BHO probably waited just long enough for all the rigs to be rented out and sent else where …to Brazil, perhaps… hhmmm. Can you say george soros and 2 billion dollars from BHO?

The Government had NO RIGHT to shut down and ENTIRE INDUSTRY in the GULF including many Oil Drilling Companies and many Oil Equipment Companies and workers’ jobs, because of one sabotaged rig. BHO has been against oil drilling from the beginning.

Drilling for American oil would make US independant of foreign oil, no need to redistribute our wealth to the Middle East countries anymore making them filthy rich, and keep oil prices low here at home, but NO some of YOU don’t want a successful America. You and your kind are the Enemy.

We wanted to tap a large resource in Alaska, but the libs lead by Al Gore decided that some caribou were more important that the people of this country. Isn’t it always good to know that these lib, gay loving, baby killing, marxists think an animal is more important than WE THE PEOPLE? FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

          • Christin

            SAMURAI, YOU’RE BACK!!!

Good to hear from you. You must be doing much better if you are posting and fighting the good fight again. Missed your “For God and Counry!”

Actually the caribou are doing just fine in Northern Alaska where they are drilling in Alaska like Prudoe Bay. I have an e-mail that shows them congregating all around the snow melting area (probably spring) of the drill site basking in the sun. The gas pipelines are raised so the animals have no problem getting under (or over) to the other side to eat, find water to drink, roam or mate.

The only ones who are having a problem with drilling for oil on land in Alaska (ANWR) are the Progressives that don’t want America to keep its wealth here at home and want America to fail.

Glad to hear from you again. ;)

Speaking of the PRC… I am sure that you have been made aware by our Wonderfully informative Media that the PRC is being given drilling rights IN TEXAS ITSELF!!!

does cap and trade come to mind? When the lame ducks come back to roost their only agenda will be push as much crap into the thrown until the whole mess is impossible to flush. That way they can keep every one busy on trying to fix it rather than seeing whats in the other hand.

My entire family work in the oil and gas industry and they were all laid off at the end of the Bush Admin, now they are all back to work again. They were all out of work during Reagan and Bush One, and went back to work shortly after Clinton came into office. Strange huh?

Interesting how all of the oil and gas drilling and workover rig yards are full of unused equipment. What are you folks doing? Taking census answers or working on roads and bridges. What rig are they on and where is it working?

Again regulation will trump all. Sure you can drill if you can comply with these onerous new regulations. Folks they are literally trying to break the back of the greatest nation on earth right before our eyes.

All in the name of saving the earth! Total hog wash.

    • BigBadJohn

      My idea is simple.

General Contractors are required to put up a bond so that if any of the houses that they build has major problems, homeowners have a way of being compensated, instead of the builder simply declaring bankruptcy.

Why not require the same from Oil companies, loosen drilling restrictions but require them to put up a 5 billion dollar bond that could be immediately drawn upon for remediation?

      • Joyce from Loris

It makes sense to me. My husband and I are retired, and travel from place to place selling t shirts. We have to carry $1 million in insurance. To sell t shirts!!!

        • s c

Joyce, do you have to compensate for being self-employed? One million dollars sounds like something The Anointed One would dream up. Some bureaucrats must be paid to see how stupid they can be. I think we’d be better served if we could turn all of those half-baked regulations against those who create the damned things. Neuter the SOBs, and then outsource them to a hostile country.

          • Joyce from Loris

Actually, it is worst than that. I have to carry this type of insurance to cover myself and any event that I attend, to make sure that IF I AM SUED for any reason, including “hurting someone’s feeling” (yes, that is true, it is on the policy), that the event planners are covered and protected from the lawsuit. The lawyers are the demons of this world. They all set on Capitol Hill, making laws that will keep them and their cronies with secured employment over the stupid lawsuits out there.

        • Craig

Why do you have to have insurance to sell t-shirts? In case some whiney arsed liberal develops a rash from cotton? Never heard of having to have insurance to sell something that in noway can endanger anything or anyone.

          • Joyce from Loris

You hit the nail on the head Craig. This is such a “sue happy” society, that everyone is so afraid of, they make us ALL carry this type of insurance policy. It is ridiculous, but you must have it to play.

          • libertytrain

Craig – next time you go to a festival, arts and crafts show, know those people paid many high fees to show their wares, or sell you food. — It is a crock – but it is a direct result of a “sue-happy” society.

      • texastuxguy

I worked for a small oil company that owned the lease where a blow-out occurred. The 5 mil in general liability and 3 mil override just got the lawyers paid and a trial for wrongful death taken care of. It didn’t even begin to pay the families that came out of the woodwork to get a share of the spoils. The problem isn’t the industry, it’s the legal system. The oil driller knew the risks and was paid hansomely for 25 years before he was killed in the explosion. Further, it was his negligence that caused the blow-out, but his two wives and fourteen children were paid to be mourners. If a company is proven negligent, jail time!!! Huge awards just encourage the problem to get worse. Prosecute the guilty and their superiors. It’ll make them more careful. Drilling for oil on land or sea is risky, dangerous work even when you’re careful. No amount or regulation will change that, it’ll just make it harder for the little guys.

      • David

BBJ, I am a builder/GC and every major component of each house is inspected by county inspectors. Builders are structurally responcible for each house for a period of 10 years after closing.

That doesn’t mean a cookie cutter piece of crap house isn’t going to have issues…..so you get what you pay for. So don’t regulate builders out of existance too. The economy sort of depends on construction.

      • Gary

        They already are required.

    • 45caliber

There were multiple safey features on that drilling system. ALL FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. Further, the rig sank with all evidence – which requires multiple compartments be ruptured in the legs.

At least one expert asked to go down and solve the problem refused since he could see that the only reason for this leak was sabotage. He didn’t want to put himself into danger.

I don’t know who was the person who planned this, but I do expect to see more if they consider there to be a need.

And China has now moved in to drilling into the same field that was leaking at a rate of 100,000 barrels a day.

      • Mike In MI

        45caliber -
Please, flesh out what you mean by “…drilling in the same area.”

Are they drilling in the same oil field but out of our territorial waters or are they IN our waters? ‘Cause if they are in our waters that means they must have gotten, or been given permission, license, permits or something by this administration to invade our national space. If in international waters, or Cuba’s, we have no claim. It’s not our concern. This bugs me because I wonder what may be the potential they are claiming our “redistributable” resources because they hold our note and that’s the collateral.

        What is the story?

        • http://Alaska Wild Bill

Mike,With the directional drilling technology available today they can position their rig in international waters and then direct the drill bore into oil fields that lie under our territorial waters. If Bill Walker had been successful in gaining the governors spot here in Alaska he was going to put state rigs on state land just outside of ANWR (Alaska National Wildlife Refuge )and drill into the oil dome under ANWR and tell the feds to go piss up a rope.

Slant Drilling! First time I heard of it was when reports started coming out that the real reason Saddam Hussein attacked Kuwait was because he caught them slant drilling into Iraqi wells using Texas provided slant drilling technology.

          • Mike In MI

            Thanks, Wild Bill -
I hadn’t thought about that but it makes sense. No wonder Oblama-lama-ding-dong doesn’t want anybody, anywhere drilling for anything, mining, forestry, whatever. He’s afraid someone might make a profit -or make anything – related to capitalistic principles. He just wants us to produce, suck it out of us and send all the proceeds to his genius friends in Africa and other third world nations where it’s so abundantly apparent they have the gumption, ambition, genius and leadership to produce everything their populations need.
I wonder how long it will take him to figure out what Fidel Castro finally figured out after sixty years. Communism/ socialism can’t even produce enough toilet paper. (So, I predict the Alien-in-Chief will decree we don’t need food. That way he won’t need to worry about toilet paper complaints. The secondary benefit will be he can commandeer the food and redistribute it to his starving friends in everywhereland that food doesn’t automatically come springing out of the ground like it does here. The tertiary benefit will be they will luv him and praise him – not like here where some of us expect him to grow policies that actually have practical value.)
You know, if he really had a deep concern about those things he bitches at us about, he’d ask his friends Soros, Rockefellers and Rothschild to make a collection and feed some of his Oblama-lama-ding-dong aboriginal relatives and noble tribesmen.

        • 45caliber

Wild Bill is correct. China is drilling just outside our border – in our direction. However the oil field runs all the way down to South America. And the Mexican government was paid millions by our government to drill in that field too. The main problem was that BP was also close to the border and would have tapped into the oil field enough to draw some of it from the Mexican side.

          • 45caliber

Sorry, I meant “in THEIR direction.”

    • eddie47d

David; The President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce today said; “The business community,of course, has long recognized the need for sensible regulations to ensure workplace safety, guarantee worker rights and protect public health.” Sounds good but then he goes on to say “America is sinking under the crushing weight of the regulatory state”. That could also be true but then he went on to say,”That many regulations have a positive impact”. I’m no fan of the Chamber but but at least they are tackling the problems from the right perspective. Regulations are needed although the duplications of some of the regulations need to go. That regulations need to be streamlined to reduce paperwork.

  • Bob

We had the ban here in the U.S., then gave billions of dollars, our tax dollars, to Mexico and South America to drill in the same waters that we cannot!! does this make any sense other than the administration is tearing down our country and money?! Redistributing our money to “even out” our terribly oppressive country! These folk have got to be voted and kept out!

    • Joyce from Loris

Remember this also. It was not that many years ago that Saudi Arabia was a dirt poor country. We pumped our OWN oil, and used our OWN coal and our OWN natural gas and had other resources. Now look at Saudi Arabia! Those people do not even have to work anymore because their government gives them royalties from the oil sales, money that comes from AMERICANS! I say drill, baby, drill.

      • 45caliber

From a report I saw a month or so ago, it appears that Saudi may go back to that dirt stage. It showed that Saudi and the entire mid-east was down to about 15% of their reserves.

          45caliber -
I saw similar things, myself. I’ll bet it just gives the House of Saud the sheiks. Wanna’ mecca bet?
I’ll bet when they draw the last barrel Obumpus will be there to bestow a medal on them for contributing to reduction of awful atmoshperic CO2 by voluntarily ceasing oil production. Nice.
And AlGore will go along to drop off a handful of Crap and Tade credits while he signs the contracts for the silicone concession outside in the sand box.

  • Gary

Lifting the moratorium early means nothing. This is totally a political move. I guess they think the electorate is to dumb catch the timing of the supposed lift and they are probably right. Just look at how many people voted for Obama to begin with. The proof will be in whether or not they begin issuing permits. These morons have no problem crippling U.S. companies with this B.S. while foreign drilling move into the gulf and go to work. What a crock.

    • eddie47d

You are the reason Obama should have stuck to the 6 month timeline. Be thankful that the Horizon was plugged and the drillers can get back to business.

You have to understand, they have to cripple our economy to rock bottom….this is their purpose ALL ALONG…by any means…they have already met on 9/14 & 15th w/the UN on how to use our 401k’s into a government controlled system much like SS. The Federal Government will Manage and Control an estimated $3.613 Trillion Dollars in IRA’s and $2.350 Trillion Dollars in 401ks. The Equity will be placed in U.S. Treasury Bonds that will Pay out an estimated 3%. One major clause is that upon retirement, the value of the Individual’s Account will be placed into Annuities. Once the individual Dies, the Value of the Account will Automatically become property of the Government. The Program will be Structured much like Social Security Accounts (the biggest Ponzi Scheme ever created).

    • 45caliber

Are you sure about the bonds? What I’ve heard is that they plan to put it all into Treasury Notes – which rise and fall. I bought some years ago to see what they would do. After 12 years, I had lost about 15% of the initial cost. They went down instead of up.

      • Teresa

you can go to the un website and see some notes, or united states dept. of labor. The meeting held on September 14th and 15th, between the Labor and Treasury Departments outlined the Course of Action. The agenda is called “Lifetime Income Options for Retirement Plans”.

    • Christin

      Teresa,
That sounds EVIL to me… stealing people’s hard earned savings so they will be poor and dependant on gov …all for their corrupt spending and Ruling Elitist pleasures.

We no longer have our retirement money in those accounts anymore. One of our retirement accounts accidentally came out retirement and we took the 20% loss or what ever it was and then removed the rest of them.

I mean America IS bankrupt… there is NO more money.
If we all wait until the last minute, then they will not be able to pay. Maybe that is why they are planning on stealing those IRAs and 401ks that you mentioned.

  • Patriot

I am growing tired of this crap, we are supposed to have independent agencies (Our Justice Department) to help police this corrupt behavior of our leaders. I have no faith that they will do this, especially with that pencil neck no back-bone Holder running things! We need to put a stop to this insanity; November 2 is only 2 weeks from today! Do not think it ends on Nov. 2; our work has only just begun! Back any candidate that has commonsense ideas that are not lifetime politicians, btw these are not complex problems, they act like they are to try and confuse the masses, the solutions are very simple; fund only the items that are designated in the Constitution and we will have a Great surplus!!

    • Mike In MI

The Supreme Court and the Judicial Branch is supposed to be the check on the Executive and Legislative Branches.
The Justice Department is a tooley, under Holder, by appointment of the Alien-in-Chief and agreement of Nasty P. and Harpy Reid (a “harpy” being a horrid mythical monster, or a predatory animal).

      I agree.

    • Eric Bischoff

Yes but anyone with a whole mind might realize that this year, thanks our corrupt supreme court, corporations can now openly spend as much as they want on political ads and any politicians who don’t march in line and do exactly what they want will be out on their ass. It does not even have to be truthful, it only needs to be repeated often and money and lots of it takes care of that.

      “Williston Basin Interstate Pipeline Company
      1250 W. Century Avenue
      Bismarck, North Dakota 58506
      Attention: Keith A. Tiggelaar,
      Director of Regulatory Affairs
      Reference: Limited Waiver Request
      Ladies and Gentlemen:
      1.
On June 1, 2010, Williston Basin Interstate Pipeline Company (Williston Basin) filed a request for a limited one-time waiver of portions of section 2.7 of Rate Schedule FS-1 and section 2.4 of Rate Schedule IS-1 of its FERC Gas Tariff to allow shippers supporting its current storage enhancement project to transfer volumes from their interruptible storage account to their firm storage account without such volumes losing their stop-in-time designation1 and being assessed the additional withdrawal rate which is imposed on such transfers. Williston Basin states that the waiver will allow shippers supporting the Baker Storage Field storage enhancement project to be able to fully exercise their firm deliverability rights when the project is placed in service. Williston Basin requests approval of this limited waiver by July 30, 2010. The Commission grants a limited waiver of section 2.7 of Rate Schedule FS-1 and section 2.4 of Rate Schedule IS-1 of Williston Basin’s tariff as requested.
1 When a shipper desires to utilize transportation service to deliver gas to Williston Basin’s storage facilities for injection into storage and to transport gas withdrawn from Williston Basin’s storage facilities to specific delivery points, storage is considered “stop-in-time.” The term “stop-in-time” refers to the use of one of Williston Basin’s storage services as an intermediate stop in an on-going transportation transaction. The result is the shipper only pays for transportation one time.

  • Joyce from Loris

I watched a Glenn Beck program and he was encouraging people to be creative in their thinking, using Thomas Edison as an example of creating things. I got his point, but asked myself “What would it matter?” If Thomas Edison was trying to develop the light bulb in today’s world, he could never get the first spark with all the government regulations, laws and taxes. Even if he were able to get to the point of having a light bulb to sell, unemployed people could not buy it. And the imports!! Why, they would just swamp his idea with copies! Until Nafta is annulled, anything in this country that is made, using the GOVERNMENT’S code of laws and the taxation, is not feasible to sale when the chinese are shipping furniture here that you can purchase at Wal Mart. Our own government tries to do everything it can to destroy business and business opportunities! Our government is like the Mafia! Every time we make a dollar, they take their chosen share. Every time we spend a dollar, they take their chosen share. It’s like we have to pay the MAFIA in order to work, and pay the MAFIA to allow us to purchase things that we need. They just use the work TAX because payoff sounds so cheep.

    • 45caliber

Any tax, license, fee, etc. that the government charges is simply legalized theft. And it is legal because our representatives say it is.

      • Joyce from Loris

You are so right, 45 caliber. We have a pond on our farm that we PAID TO HAVE DUG. My husband went and caught the fish to stock the pond with. If we are caught fishing IN OUR OWN POND without a fishing “license” we will get a $150 “ticket”. I told the game warden they better not trespass on my property, and he laughed at me and said “We can go anywhere we want”.

        • 45caliber

You don’t live in Texas or Arkansas. The game wardens have to be more cautious here or they might have a “hunting accident”. One rancher I know about keeps his deer herd pruned of any bad stock and the game wardens have been warned to not interfere. They don’t.

What I think is wrong is that the police must have a search warrant to visit but most agencies insist that ONLY the police must have them. They themselves can go where they wish, when they wish whether you like it or not.

You might want to check your laws too. In Arkansas no license is required if you are on your own land and using a cane pole.

          • Joyce from Loris

Same in SC, 45, but I don’t want to use a cane pole, I want to use a lure to catch my bass with. In SC, yes, the game wardens do have the right to trespass on someone’s land without a search warrant, if THEY suspect any wrong doing. We also must have a hunting license to shoot deer, ducks or turkeys on our own land. Right now, we can shoot squirrels, but I expect them to change that as well, as soon as they realize they forgot about the squirrels!!!

          • 45caliber

They are begging people to kill wild hogs here in Texas … but you must have your hunting license first. However, unless I’m badly mistaken, you can kill them on your own property without a license.

          • Claire

What about all those Burmese pythons in the Everglades? They are wreaking havoc on birds and every animal they can swallow. Man, I would go after those snakes in a heartbeat if I lived in Florida. I saw a picture in the newspaper months ago that showed a python trying to swallow an alligator-they both died. I watched a documentary on this a month or so ago. Terrible snakes.

          • Joyce from Loris

We have wild hogs here, too. We can hunt them, 24 hours a day, any day of the week, as well as coyotes. But we must have a hunting license, even on our own land. TAXES!

        • Craig

I would have told him, on my property you will only go 6 feet under. MY land my rules.

    • Eric Bischoff

It’s interesting he would use Edison. Edison who with the help of JP Morgan made sure that the smarter Tesla’s electrical ideas did not win out because they wanted to get very wealthy by controlling the distribution of electricity. While Tesla wanted to give every one free access to electricity. But we revere Edison in our history books and mostly ignore Tesla who may be our greatest inventor of all times. Tesla obviously was not in it for the money as he tore up a million dollar’s worth of royalties owed to him by Westinghouse so that they would not have to go bankrupt. Tesla is the hero in my book.

      • Joyce from Loris

Good for you. No one hardly remembers him.

  • Jeffrey Collins

Obama’s replacement of the moratorium (the illegal moratorium, I might add) with a “permitorium” is pre-election political theater, nothing more.

  • Bob Wire

Well hmm? ~ Damned if he does and damned if he don’t ! being President reminds me of placing your feet above your head and trying to jump.

and what was illegal about this “moratorium”?

I think it was clear to all, the controlling Federal regulatory system was “lacking” ~ and in need of “adjustments”. Considering the gravity of the situation, the uncontrolled flow of crude threatening to decimate our southern coastline and no man alive offering solutions with any guarantees, much less a time frames. I think prudence prevailed by the administration. Government can be and is hard hockey.

This moratorium has hurts us all, many thought the spill itself was politically timely and now you think lifting the moratorium politically timely.

I suppose being reasonable and rational completely out of the question.

Someone pushed the boundaries of safety and all prudence that day ~ One man, one person, one overriding decision. We need to know who, and all factors and motives that affected that decision. Until we do, and make corrections, it’s within probability of being repeated.

    • 45caliber

The reasons why this occurred and the reasons why we can expect another similar problem is simple. It took sabotage to cause the problem – and nothing is being done to stop another attack.

  • 45caliber

Hey, he has to let his friends, the Chinese, in! That’s why this entire thing is about!

    • Bob Wire

That’s a pretty far reach 45. I’m not saying it’s impossible or even unworthy consideration but I would say, I would need a smoking gun with a warm barrel, a round or two shy a full load with good latent finger prints before I called out the dogs and rounded up all the usual suspects.

I don’t think The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was sabotage for any international “political gains”.

I will however go as far as to conceding to EGO of a few and gross “premeditated carelessness” with the data that’s before me today.

I know of no Chinese “Friends”, I know only of US/China talks, agreements and matters of contention.

You seems to imply a hidden factor which often is a reality but we need to move beyond the grass knoll and bring forward something to hang our hat on if you wish to dwell there and expect ours to follow.

      • texastuxguy

I respect both of your opinions guys, but let’s be honest, “pre-meditated” is a bit of a stretch. You get the best equipment available and a qualified crew with a proven track record and you put them to work. An accident is an “unplanned for event”. I’ll bet every roughneck on the rig did his best to make sure the blowout on DH didn’t happen. I’ve known too many hands from the oil patch. They do their best, exercise every precaution, have safety meetings at the beginning of every shift and don’t look to get themselves killed. But accidents do happen. The forces at work and the demands on the men and women that run the machinery are extreme. You won’t find a smoking gun, because there isn’t one. Accidents are like tolerance stack-up in machining fabricated parts. Every once in a while the machine tolerances combine to create an out of tolerance part. DH was just such a combination of out of tolerance conditions. I’ve seen it happen. The rig literally burned up. Huge pipe and girders reduced to puddles of melted metal. It happens. Let it go. Pray for their families.

        • Teresa

Look, Obama has went out of his way to hender OUR drilling rights…do anyone pay attention to what he is doing overseas. Pay attention to Yemen, there is 2 areas of water that is accessable and Iran know that in order to control this and Oil rights they have to control this. Isreal is who we should have defended instead of kissing Iran’s a$$. Obama has been playing this stalling game forever biding them time to further their nuclear arms. Even if Iran had complete control of oil, they would still have to sell to someone who would eventually sell to us, but WOULD cost us. Obamas mind set is that the wealthy of nations need to distribute to the less nations. The UN is a joke and he is using them with all he can! He WILL NOT enforce our borders nor will he bring our troops home…he is bringing the war to us so you better prpare people is only a matter of time!

          • 45caliber

Iran is already one of our larger suppliers of oil.

        • 45caliber

An accident happens when three or more things go wrong at the same time. At least one is almost always related to people – such as ignoring some lesser problem. Otherwise it is a “near-miss” – something that happened or could have happened if a third problem came along. That’s why, in the safety community, we try to find and eliminate such things before an accident happens.

          • Teresa

I know, I work for a chemical company too! I agree, safety and faulty equipment is the top of the list…I just want people to keep their eyes open to the big picture…how many days did Obama let pass before he became active? Was BP one of his biggest campaing contributors? The money he forced BP to set aside to pay out in funds has not been touched. He has targeted BP in regulations…why? Control is a big factor w/Obama but the Big picture is WHO is he really trying to please?

    • 45caliber

Reply to texastuxguy and Bob Wire:

There are a lot of redundant safety equipment on anything using oil. I work in a chemical plant that uses it. When this blast went off, it blew up at the top and the bottom at the same time. There are flares and flash arrestors to prevent problems at the top. None worked. Gas alone cannot burn or explode without oxygen – which has to be added. Further, the blast at the bottom had NO oxygen available. it was almost a mile away from the surface blast. And the equipment there didn’t work either.

So ALL safety equipment failed. That happens only when all procedures are ignored for a long time and even then at least one will normally work. There were at least four safeties that all failed. The ONLY way you can override them is sabotage.

The drill platform is stabilized by flooding compartments in the legs so the legs and the weight of the water in them are enough to prevent the platform from swaying in the waves. To prevent a simple leak from sinking one of them, each leg has a number of compartments which are filled (or emptied) seperately. The ONLY way a rig can sink is for a number of compartments in at least two legs be flooded. If I’m not mistaken, even then the remaining leg (or legs) will keep it afloat. The ONLY way to sink one is again … sabotage. And the sinking of this rig was quite convenient to prevent any real discovery.

Further, I read the other day somewhere that one of the experts on oil leaks of this sort was promised $2300 an hour by BP to go down and stop the leak – and he refused because he didn’t want to take the chance that someone might still want the system to leak.

      • eddie47d

More useless conspiracies thrown around. BP dropped the ball, plane and simple.

the smoking gun is laying on the bottom of the gulf one mile down. i can’t help but believe this was pure and simple sabotage. this administration has people so environmentally inclined and determined to push cap & trade they will go to any extreme. there’s probably no way anyone could prove one way or the other, but, you can say barry didn’t seem to be too excited about the crisis. however, it another sense something this chaotic and criminal would have to be done by a very select few maybe by someone outside this country. barry is doing his best to keep oil prices high.

    • 45caliber

I agree. In fact, several years ago a chemical plant in Baton Rouge gave a safety meeting for the public. They went over all the possible problems that might cause a disaster and showed what they had done to make sure that such a disaster didn’t occur. Several members of Green Peace were there arguing that the plant was still unsafe. Two days later two of the Green Peace members were caught in the plant placing dynamite next to a chlorine tank. They had used scuba gear to swim down the river and sneak into the plant. They intended to blow up the tank, sending a chlorine (mustard gas in WWI) cloud across much of the residential part of the city. They were charged with many crimes. But their argument was that even if they had blown up the tank they themselves would not have killed anyone. The plant would have killed them since they had the chlorine.

      • Eric Bischoff

There you go again with your half brain telling half truths.

I believe the actual true story goes like this. Green Peace was trying to sound the bell on how easy it would be for terrorist to infiltrate our unsecured chemical plants all over this country. So they demonstrated it by scaling the fence and gaining access to a control panel. They did not and would not plant dynamite. You are a fool if you believe that or maybe you like to plant false stories. God knows there’s plenty of that going around on the internet. I believe they proved their point. But guess what not much has been done to secure these places. You have to ask yourself Why?

        • 45caliber

You are wrong on this one. The two men are still in jail – and I hope they stay there for another fifty years.

    • 45caliber

Anyone with scuba equipment could have caused much of the problem. But I suspect that someone on the rig was the sabotuer. He might even be one of the dead … since dead men can’t talk.

      • Claire

A few months ago, there was a woman that posted on this site that said she knew who sabotaged the Gulf oil rig. She said it was a wealthy man that lived in Texas. She wouldn’t give the man’s name. I think she said she had “inside” information. She posted this info a few times and then took off. Dang, I can’t remember her name. Anyone remember this?

  • chuck b

    45 caliber

the same day the explosion happened i got an email saying the no. koreans blew up the well and the admin. would have to use an atomic explosion to shut down the leak. there were reports of no.korean ships in cuban waters, i deleted it and passed it off as a joke. with this administration i don’t think you can ignore a lot of the rumors, they are capable of doing most anything.

    • 45caliber

I doubt that it was N.Korea. I suspect it was more likely some “Green” group. But it fit into Oblama’s hands and for the Chinese too.

Actually I’ve wondered for years if the libs actually want us to deplete the oil of other countries before touching our own. But they won’t admit it.

      • Eric Bischoff

Yeah that’s it the Greens did it.

Sometimes I get so angry with the abuse we levy on our mother earth all for the sake of greed that I wish the greens would use violent tactics or careless behaviors or spread lies like the Right does. But the Right is much better at it.

You know! assassinate the people they disagree with. Overthrow democratically elected governments. Dump chemicals in lakes and rivers because it’s too expensive to dispose of them properly. Sue farmers who you know can’t afford to defend themselves so that they’ll be forced to buy your terminator seeds forever. Promise to pay damages but then appeal that forever until the people are all dead.

But then I wake up and remember that that is not what drives the green. They are driven by the deep felt belief that we should leave this place at least as good as we found it. They actually believe and rightfully so that sustainability is the only right thing to do if we are to survive on our space ship earth. They can actually prove that it is economically viable if anyone was ever interested in long term results instead of just short term profits.

So no 45caliber the greens don’t do that kind of stuff, but the Right would.

The problem with the Greens is not their ideas which would benefit all of our children and their children, it’s their inability to seriously organize and make a difference. They lack the go for the throat that the right has. They are too mellow and too nice to compete with hard core Right wing politics and Corporate business.

I happen to believe that all of the small minority ideas and parties would do well to listen and join forces because they actually would find that they have more in common than they know and they could then easily change the current ingrained corrupt majority status quo corporate controlled politics of today.

        • Joyce from Loris

Eric, you must be some young fool. Yes, we must monitor the output of many companies, but don’t sell mother earth so short. God provided us with the knowledge to use oil, natural gas, coal, and provided the products for us!! Look at the oil spill in the gulf right now. People are so amazed!! Where is the oil??? Well, mother nature has taken care of a great deal of it. You don’t think God is going to set around and allow the ignorance of man kind to destroy his Earth, do you? Green Peace is so shallow. God will handle most things, if we only allow him to. We do our part, and He will gladly do his. We are not stupid images of Him, we are smart. Greed is bad, in all things, but God is good, and He is stronger than us all COMBINED. He will handle most things. Have faith.

          • BT

Joyce Surely You Jest !!! ??

  • http://com i41

Bob Wire , check the stop order on Sept 14, by the adminstration EPA wonks. It involves TransCan starting out from the Canadian border, at Baker Mt. a USA company was going to start placing the second pipe in the same path way to go to the gulf, This is our oil not Canadian oil, I have enough friends as rough necks and on fracking crews to know what is happening out in the real world. Now the latest impedement coming is for companies to give up the supplies for fracking, The hog in the trough is a democrat elected dink. Also the phony eports of only so much crude is availabity, just like OMB on cost od government programs, way underestemated.

    • Eric Bischoff

Yeah Fracking that’s another brilliant invention. Send down a secret cocktail of poisons into the ground and pollute the rest of our drinking water tables all so that we can get our hands on a little more gas.

And then there’s the little surprise that comes with it in the form of who owns the mineral rights on your property. Watch the documentaries “Split Estate” and ” Gas Land”.

It turns out that 85% of the Private land owners do not own the mineral rights on their land in America. Most don’t know that. So one day you wake up on your 5 acre ranch in Colorado and some company has started drilling in your backyard or right next to your driveway and you can’t do anything about it. If you think hunting or fishing on your own land is a problem, get your heads around that one.

The slogan “Drill baby drill” is not about oil drilling it’s about gas drilling and fracking and it was the Bush/Cheney last parting swan song as they rubber stamped thousands of gas drilling permits all over the country.

The one we New Yorkers are most concerned about is the planned Fracking next to best and cleanest water reservoirs that feeds NY. Gotta love greed and stupidity. Already Fracking has been implicated with Nuclear polluting of water tables.

What’s in that secret Fracking coktail anyway?

      • Eric Bischoff

So what do you think? Do we need any regulations or should we let corporations do anything they want?

        • Eric Bischoff

Yeah I know Government is the problem!

  • chuck b

    bischoff

we are getting fracked by the environmentalist, they are the problem, the chicken little syndrome. the liberal politicians are as bad, they keep us from drilling in places where there isn’t a problem. of course you and your crowd would howl if they drilled in a barrel.

  • http://com i41

Eric B, fracking goes thru fractures in rock, it is not in grounfd water you putz. You must suck up all the envior b–l s–t The National Marxist Democrat Communist Party put out for you simple minded morons. Same goes for the raindancering wards of the government, and all envior pukes in onsite uranium gathering and dreamed up crap of poisoning the water tablea. Most envior toliet paper brained idoits have never drilled a well, or searched for water . Except for dipping drinking water out of the toleit bowel. Another problem everyone has to contend with, you socialist a$$es leaders are spouting off about government taking away private ownership of property and businesses, Nancy”the tight skin hag” was telling the union thugs about the unfair earnings, private property and private businesses is to the middle class and the need for government intervention.

    • Eric Bischoff

      i41,
You can do all the name calling you want and that is usually your modus operandi when you have nothing to stand on but that won’t negate the facts.

      Chuck b
You can drill everywhere and anywhere you want. No one will stop you no matter what damage it does because government and administrations that are supposed to protect the environment are all bought and paid for and work for the corporations. It makes no difference which party is in charge.

What are you going to take your country back from or to?

I don’t know what you are complaining about since no one is regulating anything or doing the jobs they were put there to do anyway. It’s all a joke and still you guys complain about too much regulation.

I guess it’s too much to ask that drilling be done safely so that the underground water table acquifers are not polluted or that we don’t foul up our beaches, ruin tourism and pollute our sea food. God forbid, It might raise the price of a barrel by 10 cents!

Mark my words, I think that drinking water will be the next resource war long before we run out of oil.

Has it ever occurred to you guys that cancer was not prevalent until the industrial revolution?
I am sure that is another coincidence! But hey who cares. We need oil but more importantly we love money.

      • BigBadJohn

in Summer of 2010, I had a discussion about trickle down economics with a guy. He claimed trickle down worked and that because of this administration squeezing the rich, his business was failing.

When I pointed out that tax laws had not changed and maybe his problems were related to the economy – well he didn’t want to hear that!

Funny how people get ideas in their head and don’t want to listen to facts.

  • http://com i41

eric , when you say mother earth, if you are from her, father time must have been playing with himself to get you. These goofy worthless regs are just more money being wasted and creating nothing or solving any situations. I know that is a pretty steep learning curve for democrat anal envior smucks. I think you should go back to you Megan McCain rubber doll, both of you are full of fetid air and be the ding and the ling twin dorks.

  • chuck b

    bischoff

are you serious? drill anywhere you want? or are you just being fallacious?

    • Joyce from Loris

Chuck, he is trying to scare everyone, pay him no attention. Look at the deed for your property. If it is like MOST PEOPLE’S DEEDS, it will clearly state that you OWN THE RIGHTS TO ALL MINERALS ON YOUR LAND. This guy clearly is NOT a property owner, and does not know of that which he speaks.

  • chuck b

    joyce

what i was trying to get out of him, he said anyone could drill anywhere. we were talking about drilling for crude oil. i think he better talk to nancy and barry about drilling anywhere, they may not agree with that statement.
