Criticism grows over FDA supplement regulations

March 9, 2009 by

Criticism grows over FDA supplement regulationsIn recent days, critical voices have spoken out against the FDA’s approach to the regulation of dietary supplements which they say overburdens their producers and benefits big pharma.

Commentators have drawn attention to an FDA practice of classifying dietary supplements as drugs if they are an ingredient of newly approved medications, according to Examiner.com.

In January, the agency approved a petition by pharmaceutical company Biostratum to classify Pyridorin as a ‘new drug.’ Since the product contains pyridoxine, a form of vitamin B6, this will effectively prevent natural supplements companies from selling any product that contains it.

In response, food and supplements industry organizations have vowed to challenge the approval as setting a dangerous precedent.

This will mean that "we’re all violating that law each time we eat something with brewer’s yeast, or fish or chicken," because pyridoxine is a naturally occurring compound, says the Examiner.

It also suggests that the price of such supplements is likely to rise once they are only available by prescription, limiting access to them and preventing many consumers from enjoying their beneficial effects.

The FDA has recently met with much criticism from government oversight agencies. A report prepared by the Government Accountability Office and released on March 5 suggested that the FDA does not have the information and resources necessary to adequately regulate dietary supplements.

Sign Petition To Stop Television Prescription Drug Ads

Published by Marlene B. on Mar 18, 2009
    Category: Health
    Region: GLOBAL
Target: U.S. Congress, FCC, FDA, European Commission, EMEA

    Background (Preamble):
Statistics prove prescription drugs are 16,400% more deadly than terrorists. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1998, a report finds that prescription drugs kill about 106,000 Americans each year – that’s three times as many as are killed by automobiles—making prescription drug death the fourth leading killer after heart disease, cancer and stroke.

Last year, the Journal of the American Medical Association puts death from all drugs, illegal and prescription, second only behind car accidents as a cause of death.

The rise in deaths coincides with the direct marketing of prescription medication to the public. Prescription drug sales have soared nearly 500 percent since 1990.

The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-trillion dollar business. Companies spend billions on advertising and promotions for prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical companies claim their drug ads are “educational” to the public. The public seems to genuinely believe that drugs advertised on TV are safe, in spite of the plethora of side effects listed. Many of these drugs have proven deadly.

Every day it’s estimated 2,500 teens abuse a prescription pain killer for the first time.

The White House Office of National Drug Control policy had been planning to unveil an ad campaign to target prescription drug abuse by teens. It is time to stop this form of advertising by the pharmaceutical companies.
    Petition:
We, the undersigned, request that Congress, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), the European Commission, EMEA (European Medicines Agency) stop all television advertising of prescription drugs.
THE LAST TIME A CURE WAS FOUND FOR A DISEASE
WAS 1959. DR. JONAS SALK DEVELOPED THE VACCINE
FOR POLIO. HE WAS JUST ONE MAN.
SINCE THAT TIME, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS
HAVE BEEN SPENT ON DISEASE. NOT FOR A CURE, BUT FOR
DRUG TREATMENT ONLY. A CURE WOULD PUT BIG
PHARMA OUT OF BIZ. IT SHOULD BE THE JOB OF A PHYSICIAN
TO PRESCRIBE THE BEST TREATMENTS TO A PATIENT, INSTEAD
OF PATIENTS ASKING DOCTORS TO PRESCRIBE THESE DRUGS.
BY ADVERTISING THESE DRUGS, THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES INVOLVE THEMSELVES IN A LEGAL DRUG TRADE THAT IS KILLING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE EVERY DAY.

I don’t know if your statistics are correct or not but it matters not to me. I saw what prescription drugs did to both my parents. The more they took, the more negative side effects they had. To counteract the negative side effects, the Doctor simply got out his prescription pad and gave them more drugs. They trusted their doctor and respected the position he held. I am sure he had good intentions. However, all he learned in medical school was how to be a drug pusher: limited nutritional training and no holistic health techniques. As the result, by the time my parents died they were both on numerous medications, none of which seemed to improve their lives.

Big Pharma is taking over our health care and they certainly seem to have our government’s ear. We need to speak up and demand they leave our God-given right to care for ourselves, via non prescription supplements, alone. My husband and I have both seen very positive results from taking responsibility for our own health care. If the government takes that right away from us, we are all in BIG trouble. We will become victims of the new government health care system, and I will bet they will be pushing big pharma’s drugs like crazy.

First we need to get back to the basic, start buying organic and stop poisoning ourself. What you are is what you eat! Could start your own garden and you need to educate yourself a little. Supplements are mainly necessary because our food supply is nutrient deficient. “All disease comes from a lack of minerals”. All said more government control over us must be stopped as big pharma must be stopped! Big government has never worked and never will!
