Critical Decisions Needed In Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 1 (UPI) — It’s time for all parties to the conflict in Yemen to make the decisions necessary to end the country’s political crisis, a U.N. special envoy said.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has faced international pressure to resign for much of the year. Convalescing in a Saudi hospital since an early June bomb attack, he’s refused to sign a deal brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council for his resignation.

Jamal Ben Omar, the U.N. special envoy to Yemen, said following his trip to the country that all sides to the conflict must find a satisfactory solution to the political crisis.

“It is time for the various political parties’ leaders to make crucial decisions ending the crisis and avoiding the state’s deterioration in Yemen,” he was quoted by the official Saba news agency as saying.

Saleh in a message to mark the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan said dialogue was the only way to break the political crisis in his country.

“I call on all parties to avoid violence and destruction whatever the reasons for these are,” he was quoted as saying. “Violence results only in violence, political disputes and wars, and at the end the people are the only victims.”
