Creating A Safe Room

January 10, 2011 by

Creating A Safe Room

In the event of a chemical, biological or radiological attack, a safe room is essential to survival. The safe room should ideally be a room in the interior of the home. If no interior room is available, choose one with as few external walls and windows as possible. An adjoining bathroom is also desirable.

To prepare the room, buy enough of the following to cover all windows and doors to the safe room area:

  • Weatherstripping.
  • Clear plastic sheeting at least 1 mil thick, preferably clear, and wide enough to cover windows.
  • Scissors or other cutting tool.
  • Duct tape.
  • Caulk and caulk gun.
  • Staple gun
  • A portable HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) air filtration device.

So your room will be ready when you need it, go ahead and install the weather stripping on your windows and doors, making sure the seal eliminates the transfer of air from outside into your home. Check around your windows for gaps, and caulk those as necessary. Also check for any other places where air might transfer like holes cut into walls or floors for the television cables and telephone wires. If you find those areas you should caulk them as well.

When installing the plastic sheeting, use the staple gun and/or duct tape to hang it. In places where you use the staple gun, be sure to cover the staples with duct tape to seal off any holes or tears in the plastic.

You should also be sure you have access from your safe room to your stored food and water, or bring as much as possible into your room before you seal it off, since you don’t know how long you may have to be sealed inside.

Great info but are you sure its plastic sheeting thats one millimeter thick? thats almost 40Mils. that would take 8 layers of construction grade sheeting.

    • EddieW

I am reminded of a Biblical saying, those who try to save their lives will lose them, those who lose their lives for my sake & the Gospel’s will save them>

      • terry redfearn

Eddie W i think the passage you mentioned applies to salvation thru what Christ Jesus did and not us humans; jesus said to the jews in reference to the tribulation when they see the abomination of desolation in the 3rd temple to be built to run to the wilderness to save there lives; that is the rocky desert area of israel; also remebr jesus christ said the times would be like noah; noah had to built a ark for him his sons there wifes and 2 of each animal to survive and repopulate the world; GOd does prvide miracles at times but he also helps people who help them selfs something america is loosing as more people take a goverment handout thanks terry

      • jeffnnc

eddiew, that statement makes me think of a line in “lonesome dove”. its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. i’m sure you never were in the boy scouts.

  • JC

Don’t forget gas masks and guns.

  • Texpat

looks like someone, maybe spell check on a computer even, saw 1 mil and assumed it was an abbreviation for millimeter

  • http://www.personalliberty.com/contact-us/ Personal Liberty Support

The sentence: “Clear plastic sheeting at least 1 mm thick, preferably clear, and wide enough to cover windows.” was in error.

It should read 1 mil thick.

It has been corrected in the story.

    Thanks.

  • greg

    What about an oxygen supply?

  • jopa

Don’t forget the gas masks, pork and beans, guns and gold.I think someone should go outside take a deep breath and quit living in this fabricated fear.Every day it’s a doomsday scenario on this site and the readers believe it.But that’s the republican way.Have enough weapons in the world to destroy it ten times over and say we need more.It has just been proven with brain scans that conservatives do have a higher level of fear than liberals that will directly show up in their political views.I believe in gun ownership but mine are for hunting and not because I live in fear of my neighbor.A chemical, biological or radiological attack not likely to happen.Save your money or just take a cruise to the casino.

    • Les

JopaTroll, I am prepared and need fear no one. I am also responsible and will take care of my family and loved ones. During the 1984 Olympics, Sarajevo was touted as the most modern city in the world. Yugoslavia was booming and your socialist comrades would have said the same thing there. Eight years later, well you know. Those who ignorantly cry, “It could never happen here”, forget that it HAS happened here and will happen again. You are reminiscent of the dolts of 1933 Germany, “Not here, not us (well maybe the handicap and inferior), but not me.” I would rather face it my self than to wish it upon my grandchildren, but maybe that’s just me. Anyway, fixing this mess is going to get real messy.

      • kate8

Jopa – You will be another one of those who scoffed at people who listened and prepared, and you will be left wanting. You will be one of those looting and rioting and expecting those who made ready to share with you.

Everyone is warning of dire times ahead, even your god, Obama. Go ahead and ignore it and be the grasshopper, but then leave the rest of us alone when you get caught short. You will be entitled to nothing.

A Texan cruises thru a stop sign, and gets pulled over by a local policeman.
The Texan hands the cop his driver’s license, insurance verification, plus
      his concealed carry permit.
“Okay, Mr. Smith,” the cop says, “I see you have a CHL permit. Are you
      carrying any weapons today?”
      “Yes, I am.”
“Well then, better tell me what you got.”
Smith says, “Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket.
      There’s a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I’ve got a .22 magnum derringer
      in my right boot.”
“Okay,” the cop says. “Anything else?”
“Yeah, back in the trunk, there’s an AR15 and a shotgun. That’s about it.”
“Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range…?”
      “Nope.”
“Well then, what are you afraid of…?”
      “Not a damn thing…”
that’s how we are. plan for the worst, hope for the best.

    • independant thinker

      Love it barbm.

jopa, I live on the edge of tornado ally with violent thunderstorms gaurenteed every year with the very real possibility of major tornados. We also have the chance of major ice storms each winter and I said ICE not snow although we can get that as well. One other thing I have to consider is the possibility of a major quake on the New Madrid fault line. I live in an area that will be affected when the next big one hits. Given the above it would be criminal if I were not prepared with at least a couple of weeks supplies.

      • Kinetic1

        IT,
What you have described has little to do with this article. Sure, it mentions food and water, but anyone living in an area with a high potential for natural disaster should have the basics. I’ve lived through several wild fires, a couple of floods and some very big earthquakes (6.8, 7.1) and those basic items came in very handy when the power was out for a few days, but it did not require my sealing off the house. In fact, that was the last thing I wanted to do, since my neighbors needed access to either reach me for help or to offer help.

No, this plan is all about the fear of our fellow man. It’s not unlike the bomb shelter boom of the 50s when signs were everywhere and fathers were spending their weekends digging their own personal shelters. The fear that drove them seemed to have died off as the Cold war ended, but it’s coming back with the constant drum beat of 24 hour news. Could it happen? Could we really be bombed or gassed? Sure, but who wants to live their lives worrying about everything that could happen, but likely will not? So go ahead and store a years supply of food. Even if you just loose your job it could make life easier. Stock up on some plastic and tape, it can always be used for painting. Do what you need to find comfort, but try not to spend so much time envisioning the worst that you end up shooting a neighbor when they stop buy to borrow a cup of sugar.

    • Gerry

Typical Liberal. You say you only use a gun for hunting so then that must mean that you are afraid of an animal attacking you. Animals don’t have guns to fight back against humans, however, other humans can have guns to do harm to other humans. How do you propose to protect yourself from criminals? And for your information…..It has definitely been proven by science that liberals, progressives, marxists, and communists all have the same goal in mind, and that is to rule over others. I guess that is why you choose to kill defenseless animals over armed criminals. Anyway…I won’t worry about people like you because if and when a catastrophic event ever occurs, those who have prepared for the worst with hopes for the best will be here to live another day while those who have chosen to rely on the gov’t to survive will be the ones that the preppers will have to dispose of when we find your bodies.

      • http://None Keith

Right on Jerry! You are spot on !!! I’m with you 100%!

    • http://None Keith

Living thinking that nothing will happen and not being prepared at all could very well be the death of you and your loved ones someday soon! Have you not been watching the news? The terrorists want to kill as many of us as they possibly can and the sooner the better. They will likely get a nuke before long and set it off in NY, LA or both at the same time. You are living in a dream world if you think it could not happen to you!!!

Activated Carbon stored in a heavy cardboard drum/container (keep it sealed and dry) connected to a small 115V air pump will create enough positive pressure in the enclosed room to assure its safety from fallout particles. Tweak the intake with an additional mesh filter (such as fish tank’s filter sponge) to prevent clogging by of larger particles, leafs and garbage.

It is still possible to purchase an in-expensive dosimeter – especially for those who live in the path of fallout from NYC and Washington.

Purchase Neo-Rad pills of Potassium Iodine (see dosage on the company’s website. Make sure the pills are packed in an Oxygen-proof Aluminum wrap. Check expiration date!

Have disposable Tyvex suites, rubber booties and gloves to venture outside – you would definitely have to do it at some point and not once. Have a hose and water available for decontamination a few yards away from the shelter’s entrance. At least one Full-Face mask (see 3M or North) with particle filters is a must have item!!!

    Absolutely a 12-gage with “00” shot!!!

Etc., etc., etc. All this is pretty cheap and could be stored for years.

    • independant thinker

Full ABC suits are sometimes available from sites that deal in government surplus. Two that come to mind are Sportsmans Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt and I know there are others out there. Just remembered one more Army Surplus Warehouse.

  • John

I’m afraid that I must disagree – all the Republicans I know fear noone but they do like to be prepared. I have to recant on one point, they do fear that DSP (Democratic Socialist Party) thats out to destroy the nation.

    • Christin

Yes, I am with you on that one, John… except if I may clarify further that is is the “Constitutional Conservatives” (not necessarily the Republicans) that are protecting themselves against the admitted Socialists in the Democratic Party in DC and TPTB that wish to destroy our sovereign nation.

    • Jeremy Leochner

John I feel I must disagree. May I just ask if you could specifically name some of these democratic socialists and how and with what they are destroying the nation. Its one thing to disagree with a groups ideology or to argue with them politically, its quite another to suggest that that group is deliberatly trying to cause problems and to equate them to being a threat to our country.

      • Vicki

        Lets see. Socialism (from m-w.com)
        ——————————————————————
        1
: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
        2
a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
        3
: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
        ——————————————————————–

        Socialist (from m-w.com)
        1
: one who advocates or practices socialism
        2
capitalized : a member of a party or political group advocating socialism

        ——————————————————————–

ownership of GM. Taxing large percentage of private wealth. Bigger government with more taxes and more regulation every year.

Hmmmmmm.. Obama and czars? Of course it did not start with Obama. Socialists have been picking at our free country since they got here.
        http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1669.html

        • Gerry

Excellant response Vicki. Although in his reply to you he states too many ideas as to what socialism really is. He has his own ideas as to his “socialistic” views, however, he is still drinking the “Obama Koolaid” when it comes to knowing the reality of a Socialistic Gov’t.

      • Vicki

Opps hit return to soon Didn’t add the 800 lb gorilla in the socialist room. Health Insurance and its mandate. Not just a company but an entire industry (Health care) taken over by the actions of the representatives that voted for it. So add them to that list you asked for Jeremy.

      • Jeremy Leochner

Vicki for the sake of argument for one thing I also asked for specific people not just ideologies. Second I diasgree with you that any of those programs measures up to the status of threats to our country. And third I am a social democrat with a certain view of socialism. Personally I agree with the definitions for a socialist but not socialism. I would like to point out that politically, economiclly and philisophically speaking “collective or govermental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods” and in which “there is no private property” is communism not socialism. Socialism by inherent definition is some goverment regulation and control in cooperation with free enterprise. As a social democrat I desire to reform and moderate capitilism with a little government regulation while mantaining free enterprise control of means of production and distribution. I believe that is what most socialists want and as for socialist beliefs just know in the case of GM the government dosen’t run or own it they just provide bailouts to get the company out of the mess they got themselves into. As for healthcare I disagree about government control but I personally agree that the current healthcare bill is wrong.

        • http://?? Joe H.

          Jeremy,
If you are so pro socialism, why torture yourself? go to a socialist state outside this great FREE country and bloom!!!

  • Alex

Nobody expected Chernobyl (lived through it) and Katrina! Israel – 1991, safe rooms sealed by un-prepared and un-experienced inhabitants were not much of a shelter from a potential C-B Scad attack.

  • Thinkbug

Sadly, the great threat to our lives is not a one-time, short-term explosive disaster, but the destructive processes carried on by those elected to promote the well-being of our country. We have, as a country, strayed so far from the concepts, principles, and practices recognized and defined by our founding fathers that we are well on our way to destruction. There is not much time left to wake up!

    • skippy

Excellent “thinkbug”…you said it very well!!! Kudos!!

  • barbm

we were just talking about this yesterday. we have our plan, and we have begun to amass our necessary items. some of us think there may be an attack of some kind, and the rest of us fear economic failure may throw us into chaos. if we have time, we’ll head for my sisters ranch. if not, we’ll hunker down together at one home and hope for survival. there’s strngth in numbers, so we want to all be together.

  • Steve

jopa, so if you don’t agree with all the doomsday stuff on this site then why on earth would you read it? Strange! I would help you find a homo luvin’, baby killen’, spenden’ other people’s money and let’s bankrupt the country website but I wouldn’t even begin to know where to look for that. It is nice to know that while you state these situations are “not likely” you at least are admitting that they are possible.

    • Vicki

      Steve says to jopa:
“It is nice to know that while you state these situations are “not likely” you at least are admitting that they are possible.”

I bet jopa wears a seatbelt even though being in an auto accident is “not likely”. Or does he wear it because his Master commands him to?

  • sam

lol it is all possible, and possibly will happen one day especially with the POSIOH!!! just get ready, better to have a gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it…. be the wiser, told ya sooo!

  • http://gunner689 gunner689

Attempting to inform Jopa and his fellow Socialist travelers reminds me of an old saying:

” Never try to teach a pig to sing. It’s a waste of time and alloys the hell out of the pig. “

    Woops… meant to say “annoys”

  • Morning Star

Any suggestions for a fresh air supply?

  • SandyinOntario

What is the harm in being prepared. Preparing is not a state of mental illness. Are we mentally disturbed when we shop for food for the week. NO. People there have been acceptable signs and warnings reported by accredited scientific communities and others to warn of PROBABLE CATASTROPHE. I appreciate the expert opinions and would much rather prepare than die an unnecessary Painful slow death. Good Luck

  • bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

There is no doubt that times are going to get really bad. Good luck to all of the poor souls that actually rely on our government to help them. We can only rely on ourselves and that is storing lots of food and ammo.

  • roy

    Jeremy:
Names of admitted Socialists/ communists in the government or one of its influential bureaucracies:
    Van Jones: Communist
    Anita Dunn: Communist
    Ron Bloom: Union Boss/ Socialist
    Todd Stern: Environmentalist Nazi
    Gil Kerlikowske: Anti 2nd Amendment
Carol Browner- Socialist/ Environmental Nazi: Worked on the Socialist International’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which argues that the global community must work collectively to address environmental policies.
Andy Stern: Socialist, Globalist, Union Boss
Cass R. Sunstein: Nazi: seeks to ban 1st Amendment rights on the internet and in public
Valere Jarrett: Iranian Socialist and slum lord.
    Shall I go on?

    • http://?? Joe H.

      roy,
Let us not forget that mr sundstein is also anti-second ammendment as well! He also supports animal rights over human. IE If rats have infested a building and can’t be removed without harming the rats them the PEOPLE should move and the rats left alone!

  • http://AlternativeMedicines AutumnGal

@jopa; Did you also read what that report said about the Democrats? I did…Some might say based on that report, liberals/democrats should never be allowed to “fill” a political office….

If being prepared gives some of us comfort what business is it of those who thinks it’s absurd? Did you ever wonder why you need to “make fun of, put down, or control” others? Bad habit or???

    • Granny Mae

      AutumnGal,

You said it all. I’m with you.

  • jopa

Autumn gal;No I didn’t see Limbaughs report and I do stick to my above comment about the republicans living in fear.I don’t use my guns to hunt animals and don’t have any grudges against those that do.I am more of a bird hunter and most times when I am out with a gun I just go out in the bush just to get out and not even hunt.I have traveled alot in my lifetime and after 911 to see the people afraid to get out and enjoy life is sad.Not just in America but I have seen it in London ,Paris, Athens, Rome and Amsterdam. All it takes is a little street smarts and you can have a much more enjoyable life.I don’t need a gun to go to sleep at night or for shopping at the mall. What are the odds of a terrorist getting you.Pretty slim but if you want hunker down in your shelter and have a good day.
