Could Big Bird Decide This Year’s Election?

October 12, 2012 by

Could Big Bird Decide This Year’s Election?

Is it remotely possible that the 2012 Presidential election will be decided by an 8-foot tall, bright-yellow bird?

I know it sounds ridiculous. But the liberal cognoscenti in this country are going absolutely gaga over Mitt Romney’s promise during last week’s Presidential debate that he would end government funding of the Public Broadcasting System. Oh, the horror of it! Imagine: no more “Sesame Street” to entertain the little tykes.

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien said, “… my son was devastated when he heard that Big Bird might be killed.” And where did he get such an absurd idea? By any chance, was it from his momma?

The Barack Obama campaign was quick to seize on what it perceived as a major Republican gaffe. Within hours, it had a new commercial on the air with a narrator using his most menacing voice to warn, “Big, yellow, a menace to our economy. Mitt Romney knows it’s not Wall Street you have to worry about, it’s ‘Sesame Street.’”

Romney’s remarks followed one of the most powerful points he made in the debate. He said that when he is President, he will use a very simple test to determine which government programs should be allowed to continue: “Is the program so critical it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it?”

And then he said, in what appeared to be a spontaneous ad-lib but was probably carefully rehearsed: “I’m sorry, Jim [Lehrer], I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS.”

He added, almost regretfully: “I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too. But I’m not going to — I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it.”

I thought it was a masterful moment. But liberals think Romney gave them a big club they can use to smack him upside the head. Actually, I suspect that the vast majority of wage-earning, taxpaying Americans who were watching the debate loved what Romney had to say.

By the way, don’t spend a second worrying about the future of Big Bird — or any other Sesame Street character, for that matter. The nonprofit organization that produces the show and owns the licensing rights to all of the characters in it is rolling in the dough. Sesame Workshop raked in a staggering $46.9 million last year for licensing rights.

In fiscal year 2011 financial statements, Sesame Workshop reported that it owned assets totaling $289 million, including some $29 million in cash and “cash equivalents” and $121 million in “investments.” Oh, and the total operating revenue last year of Sesame Workshop and its nonprofit and for-profit subsidiaries was $134 million.

Yet Obama thinks these folks need to be subsidized with some of your tax dollars. Give me a break. If one of Bain Capital’s businesses were doing this well and got this much government support, you know the Democrats would be screaming in outrage.

Tell your children and grandchildren not to worry about Big Bird or any of the other “Sesame Street” characters. They’re going to be just fine; I promise.

It doesn’t look as though Sesamegate is going to hurt the Romney campaign, either. The most recent post-debate polls show him to be doing better than his most ardent supporters hoped.

An Oct. 4-5 Gallup poll found that Americans believe Romney won the first debate by a margin of 72 percent to 20 percent. That is the largest margin in Gallup history. The previous record was set in 1992, when Bill Clinton beat George H.W. Bush by 42 percentage points.

Prior to the debate, Gallop showed Obama leading Romney nationally by 5 percentage points. Now, Gallop reports the race is tied at 47 percent to 47 percent.

The Pew Research Center reported an even bigger swing. In mid-September, Pew reported that among likely voters Obama was ahead of Romney by 8 percentage points. Pew says Romney now leads by 4 percentage points, 49 percent to 45 percent, among likely voters.

I’d love to see a left-right debate about subsidizing Big Bird. Wouldn’t you? It’s pretty obvious to me that “Sesame Street” is proof of what we’ve said all along: The free market works. It’s made Big Bird’s company worth tens of millions of dollars.

At the heart of this debate is one simple truism: The liberal elites demand we all fund public broadcasting because they are convinced that they know better than we do what is good for us.

Isn’t that really what it’s all about? They are afraid that if we’re allowed to keep more of our own money and spend it the way we want, government won’t have enough money to fund all of their pet programs.

Heck, Uncle Sam is already borrowing 30 cents of every dollar he spends, which is how we’ve racked up a national debt of more than $16 trillion.

Meanwhile, the free market pours tens of millions of dollars into Sesame Workshop every year. Talk about a dramatic difference!

So by all means, let the debate continue. I don’t have any doubt which side will win this one.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

I saw a headline on another website that stated that Obama’s campaign isn’t happy about Obama using Big Bird in a campaign ad. I didn’t read the article, but if the headline is true, it may hurt, rather than help, Obama.

“Sesame Workshop raked in a staggering $46.9 million last year for licensing rights.”

No wonder Mitt is protecting Big Bird! Big Bird is in the 1%.

      • Paul Wells

…shakes head at the obvious use of libtard class division tactics that the left taught him to regurgitate as often as possible…

Robert Smith, why don’t you grow up and use your OWN talking points. We’ve heard all those tired & tiresome old ones so many time from you and those like you. Go out to or dailykos and at least get some fresh talking points of stupid!

Big Bird (ie: the actor portraying him) pulls in better than $314000 per year….evil 1%

      • Patriot1776

Perhaps Rob is actually catching on? Mitt is protecting Big Bird by ending the public funding and allowing him to fly on his own and support himself. Obama, on the other hand is trying to stiffle Big Bird by keeping him on the government dole.

      • Don

        r. smith please at least know the subject before you talk. Romney wants to cut funding for pbs. dummy. how is that protecting big bird? he is saying Seame st. don’t need tax money .they make enough to stand on there own. are u confused or uninformed?

      • Robert Anderson

Romney is not protecting Big Bird? He stated he would CUT-OFF funding to PBS! Which should be as a lot of other programs that get OUR tax money!!

Here is another big bird for you…..

President BARACK OBAMA was invited to address a major
gathering of the American Indian Nation two weeks ago in
        upstate New York ..

He spoke for almost an hour about his plans for increasing
every Native American’s present standard of living. He referred
to his time as a U.S. Senator and how he had voted for every
Native American issue that came to the floor of the Senate.

Although President Obama was vague about the details of his
plans, he seemed most enthusiastic and spoke eloquently about
his ideas for helping his, “Red sisters and brothers”.

At the conclusion of his speech, the Tribes presented Obama
with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name, “Walking Eagle”.

The proud President Obama accepted the plaque and then
departed in his motorcade to a fundraiser, waving to the crowds.

A news reporter later asked the group of chiefs how they came
to select the new name they had given to the President.

They explained that “Walking Eagle” is the name given to a bird
so full of s**t it can no longer fly.

Good….let big bird support pbs and forget the tax dollars. With the 1% the foundations should be taxed to hell and help fund the economy…….goodbye PBS

Is ignorance bliss? Or are you a part of the ruling elite in the two class society that Obama and his Communist/Nazzi allies have in store for us?

  • KG

The fundamental question about Public Broadcasting is why.

Why should the Government sponsor an independent news source that’s not connected to any corporate or private enterprise?

Public Television was started in the infancy of television as a cultural phenomenon. Critics at the time were already aware of the potential of television to be used for either the good of the public of for the good of an elite few.

If you like the “private” model, then you must “love” what FOX represents. Who would have the resources to counter FOX other than a government entity? The reason why people like Romney et al wish to destroy public broadcasting is because they actually say stuff that’s backed by “facts” and not by “Some people say….”

If there was Public Broadcasting in Germany in the 1920′s Hitler would have, probably, never been able to do what he did. Unless he had an organization like “FOX.” Gobbles would have been proud of the “propaganda ministry” of the Republican party. As well as all of their bootlickers, like Mr. Livingston, Mr. wood and Mr. Crystal. The “Ed McMahn’s of the political world!” ;)

    • eddie47d

It was completely asinine for Romney to even bring up Big Bird. For this Presidential candidate to mention this Sesame Street character is beyond lame. That was a cheap shot by an arrogant man. He could have done it differently but chose to be a simpleton. Not only doesn’t Romney care about half of America (47%) this shows he could care less about a great children’s program and the millions of America’s youngsters who watch it. I’m not sure why this subject has to be brought up 3 days in a row unless its the Republicans who are really the ones obsessed with it.

      • Alan Larsen

Actually Eddie it was a brilliant move on our future President Romney’s part. The public wants to be told the truth and not lied to. Something our Liar in Chief does masterfully on a daily basis. People with a functioning brain actually see the waste in spending that has been created by both parties. Did you see the idiot woman with 30 Obamaphones?? The Liberal bubble has been skewered. People see the Emperor has no clothes and they don’t like it!

      • Nancy in Nebraska

eddie47d, it drives me nuts that you “fell” for that whole 47% thing! romney was speaking of campaigning! He was saying that he didn’t care about the 47%, while campaigning because they wouldn’t vote for him anyway, which is true! Now, I’m no fan of romney! I think he truly only cares about the 1%! But here’s the problem…if people like you pick up on this 47% thing and validate it, it distracts from the REAL issues!! You’re acting like an obedient little follower, repeating everything the left wants you to. That whole thing is a scam and it just distracts from what’s really going on! Stick to the issues. Don’t be their puppet!!!

      • Steve E

Anyone who seriously base their voting on the Big Bird issue has a bird brain.

      • Nancy in Nebraska

Steve, it isn’t really about the idiots who will vote based on big bird. It’s the fact that there are only a few weeks til the election and everybody’s being distracted from the real issues! Time is short! Make it count!

      • uvuvuv

eddie i didn’t say or imply you were gay, but why did you get so steamed? lots of people are gay and they just love it. after all, they do call themselves gay? maybe you should go to the other side and see what it’s like.

      • eddie47d

Could Big Bird be a distraction from Romney to keep the public off of more urgent issues? Everyone had to stop and think about what he said and what he meant so he could sneak in the rest of his gobbledygook. At least we now know the Republicans use distracting tactics also.

      • eddie47d

That 47% is an important tell all in how Romney really thinks to please his party faithful Nancy and they believe every word of it. In other words he validated that talking point to his own groupies who lap it up.

      • Patriot1776

What is unfortunate is that the 47% don’t understand that obama doesn’t care at all about them, he just needs their vote. Then they will be cast aside while he hangs out with Beyonce and his 1% friends.

      • nickkin

obummer’s campaign is running with it…….they were looking for some ideas…they might want to go to disney world…side by side with goofy & obozo

    • Don

PBS can compete just like all the other networks. They don’t need tax payer money. They make plenty. Seame Street alone make $ 350 million a year. they don’t need our $450 million any more. The main point is we are broke so what do we do when the moneys all gone? If we can’t even cut this, what can we cut?

    • alpha-lemming

Wow… !!!! typical 180 degree out of phase statist logic. I’m pretty sure Nazi Germany had a PBS, as did the USSR and Venezuala…… So…. how’s the truth faring under the state run propag…er uh …news services???

    • Ed Weber

Did you major in STUPID? If the government gives money to PBS, then it “owns” PBS. The government will dictate what is to be said. I,personaly, want the government out of our business. If PBS can’t stand on its own, then it should go away.
As for Big Bird, it’s just like birth control. I don’t care if you use it or not,,,I just don’t want to pay for yours.

      • chuck

Ahmen, Mr Weber. You said it all. Well done.

    • B. Eder

Public TV today is not neutral in its programming. Most of the commentary, other than the historical efforts, is done with a liberal (leftist) bias. If you listen to Charlie Rose, Bill Moyers, BBC World News and The PBS News Hour, you will get a constant liberal bias slant to the “news”.
Public TV made Mr. Rogers, and most of the regular daytime shows on PBS, multimillionaires, not only thru the programs they produce and air but along with the merchandising sales and licensing they receive. Do you think your local public broadcasting station gets to use these programs for free? Why do you see the local stations putting on membership drives 21 out of every 60 days on the air?And why they sell/rent those lists out to other advertisers?
I consider Mr. Rogers the direct cause of the failure of the post WWII generations and I’m not alone in this view.
The government subsidy is just icing on the cake, a very rich cake at that.

      • Karolyn

“It’s a lovely day in the neighborhood…” Wow, that is dangerous singing! Totally ruined us.

    • Capitalist at Birth

Are you afraid of market economics? You must be, otherwise you would not be in support of limiting choices. Let the market decide. Some of the things on PBS and NPR would survive in the market, and Big Bird is one of them. Unfortunately for the Communists/Socialists there are many that would not. Why should they? Because you say so. That I and others who do not agree have to pay for it, whether or not we want to? In my mind that is called robbery, and if the government is doing it, it is armed robbery.

  • Howard McTaggart

Really don’t care pbs is a minor player on tv now there are other channels available with more selections and in terms of news it seems to be mostly left wing so I would
    not miss it.

    • Robert Smith

Yes, I can see the “If they say what I think I’ll believe it.”

Too bad your mind isn’t open enough to see anything else.

As I watched your boy “plugs” last night, I couldn’t help but think, he is imitating “the joker” or is he just trying to show off his gubmint paid for dentures? Either way, old progressive joe sure is a good “storyteller”. Maybe he’ll end up getting a sesame street job come January.

      • Nancy in Nebraska

Warrior, I have to say, biden WAS downright scary last night. I think there’s something wrong with him. He’s just not right (in the head?). He’s not tuned to the same channel as the rest of us!

      • alpha-lemming

        I know…. I surfed through a half dozen channels last night ’til I realized I wasn’t watching a “The Shining” marathon…

    • Steve

It wouldn’t bother me in the least if PBS & NPR were both thrown on the trash heap of history.

  • karin zoanelli

PBS is a well-heeled radio/tv enterprise, with huge fundraisers every year. for our tax payers money to go EXCLUSIVELY to them is unacceptable. the view of the staff has long been ultra liberal – singularly pro minorities, at our expense.
Romney is absolutely correct to suggest pulling the financial plug from them – if they can survive on their own, they have an adience that want them. its that simple.
Sesame Street WAS a very positive source of teaching, at the beginning. it has morphed into a political tool that is unacceptable for children – they do not teach, they brainwash.

    • Ed Weber

“they do not teach, they brainwash”, That is so harsh! They indoctrinate! LOL. Unfortunately that is what is happening to our public education system. Indoctrination centers.

  • hipshotpercusion

    Keep drinking that Kool-Aid.

  • http://mozilla robert e. lee

big bird is pro Romney;; told obama to get his ad off the show;;;;;;;;;;only idiots would be influenced by the obama chatter

    • Paul Wells

Well, stick around robert e. lee, it takes a village…and if you read some of these post..this village has many idiots!!!

    • Kinetic1

This isn’t about who “Big Bird” supports. Sesame Workshop asked the Obama campaign to stop running the ad because it suggested they supported A candidate, any candidate. Sesame Workshop has made a point of avoiding politics. Their purpose is to reach out to those kids living in homes that can’t afford preschool. Getting caught up in politics can only hurt them.

As for “why PBS”, it’s the only place where kids can watch educational shows and not be bombarded with ads. And while “Sesame Street” may earn enough in licensing to pay it’s own way, other kid’s educational shows like “The Electric Company” and “Between the Lions” might not be so lucky. And the same can be said for those shows aimed at adults, like “Nova” and the Ken Burns documentaries. And before you fire back with the argument that American’s will decide what shows deserve to make it in the market based on viewership alone, look how that’s working out on network and cable TV. “Real Housewives”, “Honey Boo Boo” and “Jersey Shore”. Mindless entertainment at best and destructive social patterning at worse. I would rather have my tax dollars pay for quality and education up front than have to deal with the social mess these shows create.

      • Capitalist at Birth

Then you pay for it and keep your hand out of my wallet, before i have you arrested for stealing. I will take care of teaching my children how to read and how to think for themselves. PBS is a brainwashing think tank.

    • Nadzieja Batki

Sesame Street will side with Romney for expediency. They know which direction the wind is blowing and if they go against the wind their pocketbook will suffer. If people decide not to buy their products they go in decline.

      • Capitalist at Birth

I have been boycotting PBS and NPR fro five years. I will now boycott any and all products and supporters (funding without advertising.) Anyone care to join me?

  • Kim

But Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street, called on the Obama campaign to stop using the advertisement. “Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns,” a statement said. “We have approved no campaign ads, and, as is our general practice, have requested that both campaigns remove Sesame Street characters and trademarks from their campaign materials.”

    • Capitalist at Birth

How can they be non-profit? I would like to see the proof of that.

  • Jon Walser

“Who would have the resources to counter FOX other than a government entity?”
Pew research seems to indicate evening news on the network: 22.5 million (2011)
    and FOX? 1.9million.

  • Gary Weldon

We Won’t be “Missing” PBS or Sesame Street or Big Bird…etc.
They are “Self Sufficient”…they aren’t going anywhere….They will always be around to watch. They have plenty of income and resources without Our Tax Money!!

    • Robert Smith

Same thing for the billions given to oil companies. Why don’t you advocate THAT money be used for something other than big oil?

      • Steve

Letting oil companies keep money they earned is not the same as “giving” them money.

      • Dennis48e

RS has no proof for his spurious claims he just throws them out there because that is what he has memorized.

      • Capitalist at Birth

The tax abatement for oil exploration and drilling companies are all small business. Shell,Chevron, Exon Mobil, etc. receive none of these tax advantages. We are not giving them any money. They just don’t pay as much tax. Without it many of these companies would quit operating. I really don’t like any tax advantages for any industry or activity including farming. If you eliminate one you must eliminate them all. I say here here.

  • Johnny

okay let me get this straight….it is okay to give big oil, 10 TIMES the subsidy that PBS gets, but we should crack down on sesame street and PBS, this to me, shows where the priorities are… is okay for us to give 4.5 BILLION to oil companies who dont need tax payer money to go out looking for oil because extracting it and refining it is soooooo profitable….and yet they GOUGE us at the pump

    • Jon Walser

A little work on definitions here…a subsidy is where the Gov writes a check. Tax breaks are where the Gov kindly alows you to keep some of what you earned…kinda like all businesses and their expenses.
Show me where the Government sends Big Oil a check!

      • Warrior

Definitions are irrelevant in the “progressives” world. Is it a fine or a tax? Are they “tax receipts” or “revenue”? The only thing that matters to them is, you have something I want and I’m going to take it. By hook or by crook. Ask em “what’s fair”? You’ll never get a straight answer only that they know the current situation isn’t. And this act just plays on and on and on.

      • Nancy in Nebraska

ALL government subsidies, tax breaks etc… should END! Some of these may have started for the right reasons but those reasons no longer exist. These subsidies and tax breaks used to go to small companies, small farms etc.. to help them compete. That is no longer the case. The oil companies, farms etc are now owned by conglomerates who certainly don’t need our assistance to survive. ALL subsidies and tax breaks are now nothing more than payoffs BY politicians TO corporations. Now I know that someone will say that the little farmer etc, benefit from these subsidies, but that’s just so they can justify it! The vast majority of these subsidies go to millionaires! Steal from the middle class and give to the rich! We certainly shouldn’t be paying for private companies like GM and solyndra. Somebody’s getting rich and it ain’t us! Then there’s medical research grants, you and I pay for the drug research, then they charge us through the nose for the drug! They rake in billions in profits! We already paid for it! We need to STOP ALL subsidies, tax breaks and deductions and grants! We should be on a FLAT tax where EVERYBODY pays the SAME rate, No deductions!!! All of these things have been set up to benefit the very rich! Very few people other than the rich benefit at all! It is all one big transfer of wealth!!! Stop worrying about what tax rate the rich pay. The REAL money for the rich is in these goodies from the government!!!

    • alpha-lemming

Welcome to the regulation shell game…. Yep.. the Government subsidizes big oil. Even so, big oil is still making only about 10 cts/gal profit vs. the 25-45 cts/gal (depending on the state) our most benevolent Government masters take. Leave it to the left to argue “my 50 cts/gal is good and beneficial, but the fact you’re making 10 cents only demonstrates you’re not paying your fare share”.

      • Capitalist at Birth

Can you define big oil? Do you know the names of the companies that receive the tax benefits. I will bet you find no BIG OIL names on the list. Check it out and let me know.

    • uvuvuv

if an oil company spends 10 million in drilling a dry hole they write this off as a tax loss, just like someone who goes to the happy waters casino and loses $1000 and claims that on his taxes. the difference is the oil company spent that 10 million employing people. now the oil depletion allowance is another govt tax break, which should be phased out because with hydraulic fracturing re-opened old wells are producing more than they did in the days of texas spindletop.

      • Capitalist at Birth

All subsidies should end, including green energy and agriculture to name two.

    • Truth Seeker

Johnny, You lead the pack of your ilk in stupidity. It has been explained many times and recently during the debate between Romney and Dumbo that “Big Oil” gets only a small % of the government subsidy. Most of it goes to smaller oil companies, drillers, etc. If Dumbo had a brain instead of being filled with hate and lies we might get to the truth. Most of the oil being produced is from private land, not government leases–like the boom in North Dakota. If Dumbo knew anything about the truth, the whole world would see his policies for what they are–an attempt to destroy this country. America, Get your head out of your posterior. The reason Romney brought up PBS funding was to show how Dumbo wasted our money on a group which never needed any funding. It was Dumbo and his idiots who brought up the name of Big Bird and once again tried to make hay misusing Big Bird’s name (and perverting the truth). Obviously neither Dumbo or You learned anything from watching Sesame Street so the money to produce the show was wasted in your case. Romney did not bring up Big Bird specifically–Dumbo did. Big Bird has stated that he wants nothing to do with Dumbo. Dumbo and Dumber (Biden) are a laughing stock and if their actions had no effect on us real Americans, I wouldn’t give it the time of day. But idiots like you and Dumbo, if left unchallenged, will bring this country down. Let it be on your heads!! You have about 3 weeks to repent!

  • Dr Ian Fernando

This is a neo con gaffe they are more concern about main street and now sesame street stealing tax payer money but continues to support the wealthy in their effort to destroy the middle class and cause a depression by the year 2013. The small business owner the neo cons referring to are not your mum and pup stores and business they are talking about companies like hedge fund owners and small wall steer companies that make millions of dollars on tax breaks and loop holes together with assists hidden in investment and oversea banks to evade taxes. These guys use every tool in the box to restore business as usual for the wealthy.their end is at site because the American people are not interested to get back the bush reagen era which created the deficit in the first place and on to of that a possible world war 111 with the neo con king mitt Romney.

    • Paul Wells

With all due respect, they are, as I am, more than a little concerned about borrowing 40 cents out of every dollar from the Chinese to pay for all this stuff that government should not even be involved in. We have $16 Trillion dollars of debt, yes that’s trillion with a ‘T’. We currently pay 6% to service the debt, but that is ONLY the interest on the debt. We do not pay anything on the principal currently, and the deficit continues to grow, that is to say, we are adding to the 16T number. Now, maybe it seems a little odd that Romney would single out PBS…but he’s trying to get people’s minds around the idea that government can’t be everything to everybody. We’ve traveled that road for far too long and look where it’s gotten us! It’s time to pay the Piper. That is what people have to realize. To continue this fiscal insanity WILL plunge us off the cliff, when the Chinese decide not to loan us any more money, and that day is sooner, rather than later!

    • Nancy in Nebraska

It’s ALL just a big distraction! If they can get people to use their thoughts and time arguing about Sesame Street etc… it keeps them from looking at the REAL issues and asking the REAL questions! We all fall for it easily! I want to know about the BIG BUCKS! When are they going to stop giving OUR money to their cronies. PBS is just a tiny fish! I don’t want to waste time focusing on that alone! Don’t get too caught up in it! BOTH sides are using it to distract YOU!!!

      • Paul Wells

Just to clarify…are you suggesting that our debt is not really $16T? I think this is pretty much in the realm of fact, not just a “distraction”. You know from your own family finances that you can’t do business this way and stay afloat for long. I know you have big theories about how it’s all a corrupt game and everyone is a pawn. But I am talking about fiscal responsibility, sure it’s not the only issue, but to me, it’s a pretty darn big one!

      • Nancy in Nebraska

Paul, our total debt and obligations are WAY over 16 trillion! Concentrating ALL one’s efforts on the tiny little subsidy to PBS will get us nowhere! We need to look at the BIG picture! WHO is getting the BIG money?!? How can we make cuts that will make a difference? And why is all the talk on big bird instead of that?!? While everybody’s busy talking about big bird, they’re STILL robbing us blind!!! It’s a distraction from the REAL issues!!!

      • Nadzieja Batki

Government has to start somewhere to decrease the outflow of money. This is as good a point a any. Noone will die or will be socially deprived as a result of not funding PBS.

    • Capitalist at Birth

      Are you mentally challenged?

  • Kim

Romney was making a bigger point. Government is too big and unless it is constitutional we should not spend the people’s money. The endowment of the Arts is another example. Look up “Piss Christ”. The artist also got the people’s money as a reward for a disgusting exhibit. Romney also mentioned that the oil subsidies should go. Along with that is when he brought up the 90 billion for green energy that was wasted. As my government I want protection for enemies, take care of the poor, handicapped, elderly and children.(but as Americans we should do this every day) and help get roads built. Our Government is out of control

    • Paul Wells

Well stated Kim, and that is how I feel also. Government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take everything you have. Although this quote is generally credited to Thomas Jefferson, it was Gerald Ford who actually said it. And he’s right. It’s time to get the government back to it’s basic functions and leave all the social engineering to charities, Churches, and the like.

    • KG

I can tell you have neither read the constitution, or understand what it actually says. People who claim to want to “return to the constitution” don’t know what the hell they are talking about.

      • Paul Wells

Shut up, Komrade KG, you don’t ever even say anything that resembles faint understanding of the Constitution, so don’t even go there. In fact, you are just a fly on this forum, can’t you find any of your little socialist friends to go annoy with your Communist crap?

      • Nancy in Nebraska

KG, I’ve read the constitution AND understand it! In short, it was written to get the government OUT of the people’s lives! I can understand why a lot of people like you would not like a constitutional government! But I understand it and I think we’d all be better off! Now, there are a LOT of people in this country today who just wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves and admittedly there would be many problems trying to transition back to a constitutional government! But the alternative is where we’re headed now and that is just unacceptable!!!

      • momo

KG says: “I can tell you have neither read the constitution, or understand what it actually says.”

This from a guy who says communism is in the Constitution!!!

      • Nadzieja Batki

You accuse people of not knowing what the Constitution says, but you and your Progs/Leftist buddies know it very well, where its tenets are weak and can be stretched to mean anything you want them to mean. Your little gang have been extremely busy termites.

    • Nancy in Nebraska

I want to know if romney’s going to end ALL the subsidies, like the oil subsidies, the farm subsidies (most farms are owned by billionaire corporations), the pharmaceutical, etc… These subsidies go to his cronies! They steal from us and give it to them!!!

  • Marc

I would like to know what brand of mouth wash Mitt Romney uses everytime he puts his foot in his mouth! He had President Obama truely defeated and speechless and then he gets carried away with attacking PBS an educational program not only for children but adults as well. Shame, Shame on you MITT, Y0U ARE FIRED, ROMNEY!

    • Liberty Lover

Marc, you are fried!…..your brain, that is.

      • Capitalist at Birth

Ditto that. I don’t trust people that spell Mark incorrectly anyway. What is he. A Roman Senator or Conqueror?

    • Nadzieja Batki

Rather immature of you to admit that your knowledge spoonfeeding does not extend further than PBS. Let us see, The Science Channel, HGTV, The Food Network, BBC America, duplicate in one form or another what is on PBS.

PBS runs fund raiser publicly every 3 or 4 months. (at least is seems every time you turn around, they cease programs and start their week of raising money. So why should the government give them money. Good Grief.

  • dan

I quit Big Bird when Bert and Ernie came out of the closet and got married . Cookie Monster was declared a cookie terrorist….Oscar is STILL homeless but there’s always Barney or Tele-tubbies
………hint: it’s not REAL and we’re REAL BROKE

    • Nancy in Nebraska

WHAT?!? Are you SERIOUS about Bert and Ernie?!? Tell me you’re joking!!!

      • Nancy in Nebraska

Sorry, I reacted before I read the last line! Whew!

    • Maryland Freestater

I have to disagree with you about Barney – Try spending your son’s first 5 years of watching Barney videos and it’ll make you mutter gibberish also!

I think some people have identified here the Romney issue as one of the role and function of government. the American form of government was designed to prevent from happening many of today’s politically based ills. I once saw a John Stossell special about government waste and he had lots of eye-opening points – in fact this show started me down the path towards political awareness and involvement. My view is that Government is a skeleton or frame – it provides basic support for everyday things like defense, basic standards, law enforcement. Government is NOT a giant teat or wetnurse to provide for all one’s needs.

I imagine if PBS or NPR were actually ‘fair and balanced’, or even just ‘fairer and balanceder’ (sic) they wouldn’t have such a problem with funding. However, let the wrong group manage to control the reins here and look at the present situation we have. It is NOT a function of the government to be in the broadcasting business (or any business whatsoever).

One has the right to pursue their own way to life, liberty and happiness – but do NOT have the right to force their beliefs down my mental throat, especially when I AM paying for it!!!

  • GiveMeLiberty

    Great points.

I’m against ALL government subsidies but then again, I believe in liberty and free markets. Beyond the public funding, the more frightening side of public broadcasting is the Femi-Nazis have used Sesame Street for over three decades to SOCIALLY ENGINEER our population! They use it to manipulate very young minds as to how we SHOULD behave and be sensitive to everything and everyone around us. I argue they’ve erased much of our ability to ‘tough things’ out in the REAL WORLD. They’ve worked covertly to soften males in society. Look at how we treat bullying today…it’s almost criminal! I’m the first one to enjoy watching a bully get their teeth kicked-in but are the Femi-Nazis making us so soft we can’t handle the bullies? So soft we’ll have no confidence to strive out on our own at 18? So soft we can’t handle the bullies in the real world? They’ve had three generations to reprogram us and Sesame Street is one of their tools, only we fund much of it. Vote Romney, defund CPB and NPR.

    • Nancy in Nebraska

I agree! They have USED Sesame Street to conduct social engineering!

  • JON

Between Mitt Romney and Big Bird, I’d vote for Big Bird. At least he doesn’t flip flop. You know exactly where he stands.

    • Nadzieja Batki

Jon, you have reached the point of no return in being socially engineered if you believe a puppet Big Bird.

      • deerinwater

You need to watch Big Bird Nadzieja Batki, he teaches by example , how to be thoughtful and kind to other people.

  • G-Ma J

    PBS = Progressive Brainwash Society

  • TonyD

PBS needs to stay alive in its current form. It should not be privatized as Romner ultimately wants…..I say this after looking at The Learning Channel. Founded in 1972 by NASA and the Health Dept as an educational channel. After privatization, to day the show Honey Boo Boo. Some educational channel.

    • Nadzieja Batki

It is called too bad, so sad for their decline.

Lots of Free publicity for Big Bird wont do any damage for the brand and maybe FOX might take it over at sometime during the next depression when it wont have government support and be able to pick it up for a song.

Lots of more opportunities will arise as Romney cuts off government money to whole range of subsidised organisations. Thats where the big money will be made by Bain Capital.

  • James Corbin

I think the whole Big Bird thing is so immature for the president of the United States to be using—–SO Childish!!!!!

  • Liberterian

Big bird and PBS are small potatoes as some of us old folks used to say. Why don’t we take Ron Paul’s lead and quit starting political wars and maintaining unnecessary military bases across the world. Let’s cut this government debt but let’s be a little pragmatic and fix the trough with the big leak. Let’s quit paying these wars like Bush did with borrowing from China. Stop making Cheney richer and Haliburton richer. I am not a PBS fan but most of their support comes from private sources. We surely do not need another war with Iran in the middle east to kill Americans and deplete our economy.

    • Carlucci

You got it, Libertarian. Stop all foreign aid. Bring the troops home, close all foreign military bases, and close all embassies/consulates in countries that hate America. Why are we paying them to hate us when they will do it for free anyway?

Speaking of that, if anyone is interested in signing a petition to stop bilions of dollars (borrowed by the US govt. from China) going to Egypt to support the muslim brotherhood, please go here and add your name:

Our local PBS station holds several fundraisers all through the year to keep it on the air. I say if you like PBS (my favorites are Antiques Roadshow and Masterpiece Theater), donate your own money to support them. PBS and NPR should never have been funded by the government in the first place.

      Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend… – !

    • Nancy in Nebraska

EXACTLY, Libertarian!!! These “small potatoes” are being USED to distract the people from the BIG stuff!!! Let’s all look at the big stuff!!! This all reminds me of what my son does when he wants to take something away from my grandson. He points and says: look over there! While my grandson is looking, my son easily takes the item in question. It isn’t even noticed! that’s what the politicians on BOTH sides are doing to us!!!

  • http://PersonalLiberty Wiley

Its about time the government stopped supporting Big Bird. Licensing and merchandising earns Sesame Street hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Maybe if government gets out of PBS, PBS will quit with their leftist propagandizing.

  • Rob

How many people here actually saw the debate and heard what Romney said? He was speaking of cutting government funds to programs that are not detrimental and are not sorely needed and PBS was one of these programs. Big Bird was in a secondary statement after he told Jim Lehrer that he liked him, but sorry, he would have to go. He then went to mention that he loved Big Bird, and he would have to go, too. The Obama campaign jumped on this and used the Big Bird reference in the ad, but not Jum Lehrer, whom the comment was made directly to.

  • Viet Nam Vet 67-68

When you have nothing to Brag about in your 3 3/4 years as President you grab at Straws or in this case Big Bird. Abomination has used AARP and Now BIG BIRD and both of these organizations have asked not to be used because they are not backing Abomination. It is a sad day for the New Marxist muslim Party. I wish I could show you a picture of Abomination holding and reading a Muslim book “Post-American World” its our future if this Marxist Muslim is re-elected. Here is the statement with the pictures I can’t figure how to transfer from my email; The name of the book Obama is reading is called:
The Post-American World, and it was written by a fellow Muslim.

“Post” America means the World After America!
Please forward this picture to everyone you know, conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican!
Folks we need to be aware of what our president is thinking–or planning.

We must expose Obama’s radical ideas and his intent to bring down our beloved America! This is a Muslim Radical Book and is what Abomination and his Muslim Brothers want to do with America and if he is re-elected he will be a Lame Duck Radical Marxist Muslim. Its up to the idiot voters to decide where America goes Marxism or Capitalism and Constitution. Viet Nam Vet 67-68

i have an photo from the internet showing his taking off his shows to get on his prayer rug. he is with these other dudes, all in those arab flowing robes (and invited to the white house) and he is either just showing them a courtesy or he is a believer. well if it was me i would just stand respectfully aside, except i wouldn’t let them come within a mile of the white house in the first place. that would be like richard nixon inviting jane fonda over.

      • eddie47d

Why would Jane Fonda want to hobnob with a domestic criminal? Why would she want to rub elbows with a war criminal like Nixon? Why would she want to fraternize with some one who endorses spying on US citizens? LOL ! Save your breath I already know your answer!

      • Patriot1776

Because she’s like the rest of the hollywood liberal elitist, you know, the ones that hold fund raisers for the current potus.

      • momo

I doubt if Jane Fonda would want to visit Nixon, she was too busy at that anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi.

      • deerinwater

Ms. Fonda is as busy as every living and enjoying life.

“We must expose Obama’s radical ideas and his intent to bring down our beloved America!”

  • MNIce

The Obama-worshipping left feels (not thinks) we should all have a conniption fit because Mitt Romney wants to force Big Bird to grow up and live on his own merits instead of on a government handout. If this is the best argument they have for voting for Mr. Obama, their case is extremely weak.

  • Doug

Big Bird needs to ask Sponge Bob and Dora the Explorer how they live without government money. Seriously, Big Bird rakes in 50 million a year and still wants government money. Am I the only one that sees something wrong with this picture?

    • George Vieto

I think Dora is the most hated cartoon character since she is Hispanic. I wish Word Girl would go to another network since she is funny and educational.

    • deerinwater

I would be more interested to know how they live under the sea and on the sea floor.

  • uvuvuv

i can’t remember when the fox network started up, but at the time fox was a motion picture company only. they started broadcasting by showing re-runs of old shows. i would guess this was in the early 80s. they started with extremely humble beginnings without any govt help and fox is now a colossus. both pizza hut and facebook got their starts in a dorm room, and hewlitt packard started in a garage. amway also. no govt help. this is what gets the libs groveling on the floor chewing the carpet, unvarnished success. myself, i guess i could be characterized as a failure, but i did it my way.

Big Bird must be the liberals symbolic bird !! I prefer the conservatives having the American Bald Eagle as their symbol even if it is being shot at by our enemies a lot today thanx to liberal policies in place !!

  • Jeremy Leochner

Its sad that this has become an issue. Romney makes a gaffe where for the first time he makes a specific request for cutting government spending and what is it, its PBS. So the policy analysts, the fact checkers, the pundits and the comedians have a few good days. Nothing too serious. Sadly the President made a big deal of it by putting it in campaign ads and mentioning it more then it needs mentioning. It boils down to simple facts. It was not a good idea by Mr. Romney to mention this. It was an equally if not more idiotic idea for the President to keep mentioning it. PBS is a small part of a very large budget. I respect Mr. Romney for wanting to make cuts. But since this was the only concrete cut he has suggested I am going to have to go against it. For now lets focus on the wider deficit. PBS aside I would like Mr. Romney to talk about how he wants to cut spending and how he can some how reduce tax rates across the board by 20 percent with out lowering revenue. That’s the debate we should be having. Not who hates and who loves big bird.

    • deerinwater

      It’s the political season Jeremy.

Do you remember in the run up to 2008 election, America was importing huge amounts of crude oil and one of the issues of the day was oil independence.

Obama made the statement that there was something every American car owner could do that would help and shave 2% off of this number ~ by making sure their tires were inflated properly.

The GOP made fun of him and had a field day with his statement, ~ they came out with a tire pressure gauge and labeled it “Obama’s Energy Policy”.

So Big Bird is clearly fair game.

and by the way ~ Imported crude is down today.

“A boom in oil production from the shale formations of North Dakota and Texas has the U.S. on a course to cut its reliance on imported crude oil to about 42 percent this year, the lowest level in two decades”

      • Jeremy Leochner

I can understand that. And if it helps bring attention to larger issues like the tire gauge brought to energy policy then I suppose it is fair. I just worry that to much attention is being paid to the gaffe and not enough on the context. I do not necessarily mind if PBS is just one in a series of spending cuts that Romney has in mind. My problem is that that is the only one he mentioned. So for me as a voter it sounds like Romney is suggesting that we can get our deficit under control if we just stop giving money to PBS. That worries me far more then the possibility that Big Bird might be gone.

      • deerinwater

Well, ~of course, your point made. Mitt Romney is attempted to get elected anyway that he can. ~ This requires him to say things and make comments without alienating potential voters. It’s a daunting task! Mitt’s arithmetic is very “fuzzy” and he want to keep it that way.

Placed in the position that required him to say something about spending cuts ~ PBS was probability as safe as he could think of. ~ But Obama team has managed to turn it into an assault on “Big Bird” ~ hey! LOL! children don’t vote! but a woman will defend her child first and foremost (men too) but it’s the women this ploy will strike a nerve with.

Mitt Romney doesn’t really know what he is going to do, ~ Just like Obama in 2008, ~ they don’t really have control or know what they will have to work with if they land the job.

There was no way Obama could allow the auto industry to fail, that was never seen or part of his plan. While Mitt not being the President of the nation but an opportunist ~ and having little concern for unemployed people ~ sure! let them go bankrupt ~ let the vultures pick the bones ~ some few people stand to reap big gains at the cost of 3 million Americans loss.

It’s all a matter of what “hat” you and I and they are wearing at the time.

Today Obama is wearing a presidents hat and must think and talk like one.

Mitt is attempting to try the hat on for size.

  • Jefferson Thomas

Obummerbirds: part of the genus politicalus leechoffus, they are characterized by their parrot like screeching, and the ability to distract with their plumage as they reach into pockets and remove the contents. All of the birds of this species have the extraordinary ability to parrot the phrase “I only took what was yours to help you” from the time they hatch. This ability seems to be inborn in this species. Large flocks of these malevolent pests have been known to abscond with large portions of the work of other species. We must cut back on their numbers and severely limit them as has been done at times in the past.

The human species is in extreme danger due to the nature of this invasive species that produces nothing and lives off of the efforts of others. Those who would like to eliminate this destructive species or severely limit the damage caused by them are encouraged to submit constructive ideas, become responsible self leaders, and come to the realization that you do not need these bird brains.

    • deerinwater

No question in my mind Mr. Thomas, you are endangering to all living things.

      • Jefferson Thomas

My ability to identify parasites and my hope to remove them makes me a danger to all living things?

Interesting illogical leap on your part. Careful where you walk in the water deer…the leeches will attach themselves to you and cause your system to work harder to support them, they also carry other micro-organisms that can make you feverish and cause hallucinations that cause your mind to believe that they are actually beneficial to you.

You should have seen the reaction PBS Kids gave to me. They are afraid that Sesame Street, Curious George, Word Girl, Wild Kratts, Sid The Science Kid and other television shows on the network were going to be killed off by mean old Mitt. I told them what the Red Grasshopper a Mexican superhero said “Don’t panic.”

  • Deerinwater

I am a supporter of PBS and enjoy the programming , The Red Green Show’s humorous satire of male manlyness is a hoot, it takes a 100% real man to laugh at himself and not exactly every mans viewing pleasure. I Love to listen to Prairie Home Companion on Sunday mornings, ~ I enjoy BBC approach to delivering the news without fare-fair or embellishment, ~ I enjoy the thoughtful commentary and human interest stories from around the globe that help unite us all.

That PBC is not required to appeal to the common denominator and fight for market shares in mass media has an elevating effect on it’s content and programming style.

America would do itself a disservice with any attempt to kill off Big Bird.

    • Jefferson Thomas

By all means support PBS all you want.

The immoral problem begins when you support and advocate the coercion and force of government to support PBS through the taxes extorted from others.

Quote from memory “Government is that great entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else” Frederic Bastiat.

“Kill off Big Bird” hahaha If Big Bird can’t survive on his own by now he deserves to die. This is another example of the waste of the tax payers money to fund the pet projects of those who should compete in the market place (or in the case of PBS beg for donations as well as advertising given to those who give them “grants”).

I recommend where you can read an article entitled “Not Yours to Give” that tells the story of Davy Crockett when he was a congressman and how it changed him from a politician into a statesman.

      • deerinwater

Well, ~now you know how I felt when I was being extorted to help pay for your major medical, ~ it’s not much fun is it?

At least PBS is there, ~ for the brighter minds while no one is being forced to watch it. Brighter and less dysfunctional people makes for a better future and a healthier planet.

The government is investing in good mental health ~ if you see propaganda, point it out. You have the same access that I do.

You want to start inventorying all the paper clips of Capital Hill as well?

    • Jefferson Thomas

@deerinwater…my major medical? What are you talking about? I have no health insurance now and the only medical insurance I have had in the past was through an employer in the private sector.

Sounds like a great idea to inventory paper clips and everything else the wasteful crooks in Washington are stealing.

PBS is for brighter minds…..hahahaha. I don’t care if PBS is there or not as long as they are not using tax payer money to fund it.

    • deerinwater

The GOP can’t either and spent the last 4 year not talking about their record.

Today, we import 42 % less foreign crude oil

Today, credit card companies can no longer rape consumers with hidden charges

Today, student can now enjoy low interest loans to help fund their education

Today young people can now be allowed coverage under their parents major medical policies ever though they are not classified as a dependent.

Today you can not be dropped by an insurer when you need them the most, with you are sick and don’t have the energy to fight.

Today, Osama swims with the fishes

Today, the Iraq war is over

Today, the GOP has told you that they don’t want reform or they would have embraced Ron Paul or at least accepted some of his ideas.

Today, news reports tell of the arresting of people(s) found committing fraud in the health care industry on a daily bases.

Today, The U.S. deported nearly 393,000 people in the fiscal year that ended this Sept. 30, half of whom were considered criminals.

Today, and only today has American (gross non government) job loss been stopped.

      >facts;, CNN found that there has been a net increase of just 300,000 nonfarm payroll jobs since Obama took office. And if you count government jobs, there are actually 400,000 fewer people working today than in January 2009.<

meaning? Government has been downsized ~ Read it for yourself–election.htm

Today, a strong personal commitment is made to returning VET's and their families by the current administration and spearheaded by the first lady in hands on fashion.

Today; the donut hole has been closed in the Medicare Prescription Drug program where by 32.6 million seniors save an average of $550.00 per years.

Today, Insurance companies must justify rate hikes

Today, The pressure is still on Al Qaeda, we have not let up.

Today, while the sound of war drums are heard from all over the globe, US leadership is not being pulled off sides with all the baiting and saber rattling.

Today, we have a President that is very familiar with being unpopular, showing little interest in the game of being the flavor of the day.

And you have me to believe this is not progress? Compared to W's tenure ~ it's great progress ~ and this is just off the cuff ~ I could go on for hours .

DeerinWaterI disagree with alot of your statements,i think you should studie some more on your facts.IAbout Student loans,About 15 to 18% are now overdue,The average credit card delt is around 10,000 dollars(if you still want call the dollar,a dollar0or more.More young people are with their parents because a lot of them don’t have a job to go to (and the real unemployment is around 15-18%.(25% is what a lot of people would call a depression!!!)But i do agree with you on one point oDUD-a swims with fish(i certainly hope so,I also hope that alot of the fish turn out to be sharks)Another thing-Oil!!!The USA import of oil has dropped by about 10%(from about 51%-down to about 45%)but you can;t in all fairness give the credit to O_DUD-a,because he has done next to nothing to increase our own production of oil!!!!And you talk of Fraud,How about vote Fraud, like stuffing the ballad box (Acron,-for one)which our Unconstitutional President has been linked to.How about his Birth Certificte??(Proven to be a out right”Fake!!!!”I could go on…but what the hell…obomba is a lost cause, and anyone that would vote for this guy(Which I didn;t)Would have do so without a brain!!!!Long live Big Bird and Romney /Ryan 2012!!!!

Big Bird does not need the progressives (socialists)… but the progressives, coming our of a totally failed education system, can relate to simple sentences. Losing BB would seriously hamper their understandable programming.

Here’s a question for the mental virgin crowd (utopians). How is it possible to get someone in the White House who DOESN’T know that Big Bird doesn’t exist? How is it possible to have even ONE adult in America who thinks that American taxpayers need to fund EVERYTHING?
Look around, and you’ll find LOTS of adults who don’t need Big Bird in their lives. Apparently, Obummer “needs” Big Bird. Utopians, you sure can pick ‘em. Losers.
