Conservatives Ask Widow To Stop Using Logo

MONTREAL, Aug. 16 (UPI) — The Conservative Party of Canada sent a letter to a Quebec widow, asking her to stop using the party’s logo on her anti-asbestos Web site.

Michaela Keyserlingk, whose husband died of mesothelioma — a cancer of the lungs that is linked to asbestos poisoning — received the cease-and-desist letter by e-mail July 29 from Conservative Party of Canada Executive Director Dan Hilton, Postmedia News reported.

“It has come to our attention that your organization is currently using a trademark of the Conservative Party of Canada in your advertising material,” Hilton wrote. “This usage is unauthorized and must cease immediately. … Please govern yourself accordingly.”

The Web site www.canadianasbestosexports.ca was created to raise awareness that the deadly mineral is still being mined and exported in Canada. Keyserlingk uses the conservative logo on her site because her husband was a “true blue” conservative.

“I am delighted that someone in the Conservative Party of Canada is finally reacting after years of work by chrysotile asbestos victims,” wrote Keyserlingk in a reply. “[Hopefully] we could come to some agreement before the ads get replicated too often.”
